Chapter 805: Volume 24, The Beacon Camps, Chapter 15: Refusing to Return Home in Glory_2

Floup’s demeanor remained gentle, but impatience had begun to show in his tone. In his view, Ramla’s mind was undoubtedly too stubborn and rigid, even to the point of paranoia. No matter what, Komer was still a scion of the Reese family, and even if his lineage wasn’t the most noble, the situation had now reached a point where even Cartin had formally recognized and ordained him as the new Lord of Homer. He held in his hands the formidable forces of the Barbarians and the Half-Beast Warriors. Even Homer’s Army, when combined with the Church of Light and the Royal Court Magicians, had been utterly routed before him. Who now could stop his advance? In Floup’s opinion, failing to recognize the currents of the times under these circumstances was far too rigid. He saw Ramla’s attitude as a kind of affectation, an almost pathological affectation. If it were not for Komer’s special blood connection with Mr. Ramla, Floup would not have bothered spending so much effort coming here to have this useless debate.

"Do we in Homer acknowledge Cartin’s side?" Ramla asked coldly, "Princess Katya has yet to receive formal recognition, and it’s still undecided who between her and His Highness Prince Hoffman will inherit the throne of the kingdom. Her meddling in Homer’s affairs now is presumptuous!"

Floup felt stifled by frustration. Ramla was really nitpicking. He knew that the kingdom’s control over the various lords’ territories was nearly non-existent right now, and Cartin’s edict was merely a fig leaf, but he insisted on taking it seriously. Did he really think Komer would obediently retreat back to the Caucasus without Cartin or Godeburg’s confirmation? Absurd!

"Mr. Ramla, are you saying that you would only acknowledge the transfer of Homer’s lordship if there was an official mandate from Godeburg?" Floup asked patiently.

"No, I hardly acknowledge it. I will only ever acknowledge Duke Philip’s lordship over Homer," Ramla responded resolutely.

Floup finally stood up, remarking with some regret, "Mr. Ramla, I deeply admire your unwavering loyalty, but the course of events will not change simply due to your stance. We must learn to adapt to the changing tides. I respect your decision. Mr. Warrensky, Mr. Sherman, gentlemen, I think there is no need to waste more time here. Let’s go about our decisions."

The group finally left the Reese family mansion. Ramla, looking fatigued, supported his forehead with his hand and slumped into the brocade chair. The bright sunshine poured into the forecourt, making the intricate patterns of the Sons Carpet on the ground starkly visible, down to the subtlest details of each stitch—a symbol of Ramla’s own complex emotions at this moment. Komer had returned, and in such a manner; Conan had returned too but had been ignominiously defeated by the Barbarians under his brother’s command—a perfect irony!

His own favored legitimate son Conan was now reduced to a beggar, while the detested Komer he wished to sever ties with had become the new Lord of Homer, and even he would become his subject—how ludicrous and absurd! Yet it was a fact!

How was he to face this unacceptable reality?

When the terrifying Earth Dragon Warriors stepped heavily and resolutely onto the streets of Cyprus City, when the hulking, fearsome Barbarian and Half-Beast Warriors stood arrogantly at the corners of Cyprus, it was then that the people of Cyprus truly felt that Homer had indeed changed hands. The shadow of the Beastmen threat had not yet completely faded from the hearts of Homer’s citizens, and now the real Barbarian Warriors were standing atop the walls of Cyprus City. This caused some panic and fear among the Cyprus people, unsure of how to deal with this change.

The fearful gazes of mortal men brought a sense of pride to the barbarians and half-beast warriors, a pride they had never experienced in Leon and Caucasus. Although they had been disgracefully beaten by Homer’s knight order, they had ultimately triumphed, and now it was time for the victors to display their majestic and valiant military stance.

Almost without Fran’s reminders, the half-beast and barbarian warriors conducted themselves with surprising perfection in Cyprus City. They adhered to discipline and obeyed orders, acting entirely according to the requirements set before entering the city. None of the worries Fran initially had came to pass, which greatly relieved him. He had not expected the sense of military honor to be so impressively upheld by the barbarians and half-beasts. Fran was aware, however, that this situation could not last long. If these half-beasts and barbarians were to remain bound in an unfamiliar environment for an extended period, their patience would gradually erode unless they could integrate into this new setting, but that was clearly not realistic at the moment.

Komer had not realized the psychological impact his dominion over Homer had on many people from his previous life. He was not even very interested in how Cyprus’s fall into his hands would bring about change for the entire Kingdom of Nicosia. He had more pressing issues to consider, especially those related to the Church of Light.

News had already arrived from Maha Gummi—Godeburg was completely stunned by the martial force from Caucasus. No one had expected that, even with the Church of Light dispatching the Three Saints in coordination with the Court Knights, Homer’s army would still be defeated by Caucasus in the briefest span of time. Now, with heavy losses among the Royal Court Magicians and the mages returning to Godeburg remaining tight-lipped about the war, the Church of Light was still shocked and puzzled over the whereabouts of Saint Iliana. It was said that some discordant disputes had already arisen within the Church.

The two great lords of the North—Silesia and Poznan—had ceased their military preparations, at least on the surface. The troops they had originally assembled on the northern border of Homer had retreated into their respective hinterlands. They were possibly waiting, watching, and speculating; they needed some time to digest these sudden dramatic changes.

The reaction of the Galleian people was even more dramatic. After the Nirvana Knights returned, Gutenberg remained silent, and as soon as Cartin officially announced the new master of Homer, Zellin sent his congratulations right away. Of course, these congratulations were secretive and not made public, prompting Komer to once again recognize how "precious" the "warmth" between people becomes once the veneer of modesty is peeled away in this world.

Although His Highness Prince Hoffman did not immediately extend an olive branch, the acknowledgement decree pronounced by Cartin had a significant impact on him. The Philip family had utterly declined, with virtually no chance of regaining their former glory—especially now, during a chaotic time in the Central Kingdom, when no one paid him any heed. Though Silesia had taken in the Philip family considering the Philip family’s long-standing despised behavior by the Romanov family, it was impossible for Philip to receive any substantial help. Perhaps his only fate was to be a dispossessed noble enjoying his twilight years in Silesia; what he had usurped from Cyprus was enough for several lifetimes of expenditure.

He had at last arrived at a brief period of respite. Of course, this was only on a military level. The surface calm foretold of more fierce turmoil when the next crisis hit, which would manifest bit by bit through political and diplomatic layers. Such things included overtures from Cartin and Godeburg, negotiations with the Church of Light, and secret contacts with the other great lords.
