Chapter 785: Volume 23: Rising Winds and Swirling Clouds, Chapter 21: Accidental Slaughter
Komer watched the scene in front of him with satisfaction, as rolling black clouds shrouded the city walls of Takros Castle. The churning clouds, like an invisible hand of magic, constantly changed shape, now condensing, now scattering. Under Sheferley’s strenuous manipulation, the clouds never receded, and they even continued to spread toward the surrounding areas not yet engulfed, thanks to the magic power support from Clarence and several other mages. Without mage support, the Homer Army had fallen completely into chaos. The ghost-like black fog was inescapable, tenaciously clinging to every soldier on the battlements, making it impossible for them to see the attacks coming from beneath the city walls, while blood and screams only further agitated the already bloodthirsty Homer soldiers, making it difficult for them to restrain themselves.
The sound of panic from within the dark clouds, mixed with the chaotic clashing of weapons, sounded even more eerie, making Komer’s heart skip a beat as well. He hadn’t expected Sheferley to have such a profound mastery of air magic. If that man had used this technique against his own Caucasus Army, although he could have dispelled it quickly with light magic, the brief chaos it caused would have given the Homer Army a perfect opportunity to deal a heavy blow to the Caucasus forces.
By now, the Barbarian Infantry Formation had long been arrayed beneath the city walls, waiting for orders. Meanwhile, the Half-Elves had entered a high-frequency firing phase. Facing the dense Homer soldiers, they didn’t need much skill in archery; they just needed to aim roughly and continually shoot at the battlements still shrouded in black fog to achieve the desired results.
After over a dozen volleys of crossbow fire, almost the entire Homer garrison on the front battlements of Takros Fortress was decimated. Though the density of the black fog had lessened, its spread had become wider. Homer soldiers, panic-stricken, completely lost their fighting spirit against this asymmetric battle. It was only when Barbarian Warriors swarmed up and howled as they leaped onto the city wall merlons that they realized they were facing not just the ghostly fog and the Half-Elf Crossbowmen whose arrows found every gap, but these ferocious figures in front of them with blood-red eyes on the battlements were their most fearsome enemies.
The Barbarian Warriors climbing up proved their undisputed resilience with their fearless bravery. As the fog began to thin out, the Homer soldiers who continued to pour in from inside the castle still held numerical superiority. Despite their massively weakened morale and will, they could still keep killing the uncoordinated, solo-fighting Barbarian Warriors by relying on the fortifications and combined tactics on the battlements.
Blood flowed atop the battlements, and severed heads rolled about, indistinguishable as to whom they belonged. Both sides, trapped and having nowhere to retreat, had lost all thought. Barbarians needed this battle to prove their worth of existence in the Caucasus to other races. The Homer soldiers, on the other hand, understood that once Takros Fortress was lost, the entire Busen Plain, including Odessa, could no longer stop these savage Barbarians, and even Cyprus would lie prostrate at the feet of these barbaric tribes composed of various lower races.
When Sheferley’s Dark Night Mist finally dispersed from the battlements of Takros Fortress, Mihailovich knew it was time for his entrance. As a brand-new Magic Metal-made Magic Puppet charged into the ranks of Homer soldiers, who were still resisting fiercely, an unprecedented war began.
No matter from which angle, the front-running Metal Magic Doll lacked any human traits. Its serrated upper limbs resembled two exceedingly sharp scythes, and the oval head was topped with sharp iron caltrops, clearly indicating that the head itself could serve as a lethal weapon. Its feet were made up of triangular thorny rods, darkly colored and densely studded with spikes, obviously not for decoration.
As Mihailovich’s catalyzing magic and magic spells activated the Metal Magic Doll, it executed a bizarre gliding motion and plunged into the Homer ranks, which had formed a solid defense with round shields and blades. As the Homer soldiers’ agonizing screams echoed atop the walls, the Metal Magic Doll had already completed its first wave of attacks. Its scythe-like upper limbs retracted from the unprepared chests and abdomens of two Homer soldiers, while its spiked feet had sprung into the air, tearing through the cheeks of two other soldiers. Blood gushed out, mixed with white brain matter. Like a demon possessed, a ripple spread across the impassive face of the Metal Magic Doll, as if savoring the taste of victory.
Swift as a specter, the Metal Magic Doll dashed into the group of Homer soldiers. Wherever it appeared, horrifying screams followed, ripping apart the entire Homer defensive line as if it were shoveling snow. No one dared to face such a devil, an indescribable creature from hell!
For the first time, the Homer soldiers witnessed such a terrifying scene. This bizarre object resembled a bloodthirsty demon, a slaughtering machine without any sense of life, simply swinging and stabbing every part of its body that could inflict damage, as madly as possible, destroying everything in front of it, whether human or object.
"Oh!" Even Komer, who was somewhat prepared, couldn’t help but exclaim in astonishment. This was simply a natural-born killing machine! The metal magic puppet revealed by the Heavenly Eye Technique was undoubtedly a notch above the creations of Mihailovich in the past. Perhaps eager to showcase the capital that qualified him to be appointed as the Chief Magician in front of other magicians, the puppet under Mihailovich’s control had given Komer an immense surprise.
"Mihailovich, you’re a genius! That you could create such a thing—I can hardly believe my own eyes! After this battle, I must have a thorough exchange with you on the subject of puppet magic. I feel that surely we will find much common ground!"
Komer observed the happenings atop the city wall with pleasure. The Barbarian Warriors, after their initial brief shock, quickly realized what the metal magic puppet brought to them. Besides a growing sense of awe for their Lord deep inside, they certainly wouldn’t waste such an excellent opportunity to break through the enemy’s defenses. Barbarian Soldiers who continuously climbed up the ladders through the city wall merlons had switched to assault spears four meters long, forming miniature attack teams with spears on the wall that could easily skewer the Homer Soldiers, who had already been terrified by the performance of the metal magic puppet, into bloody gourds. As the puppet furiously cleared the way ahead, the attack squads continuously expanded their territory, gradually forming neat attack formations, which undoubtedly signaled the end of the Homer Soldiers’ resistance.
The roaring Barbarian Soldier formations were like rapidly spinning grindstones that stirred up a storm of blood and carnage atop Takros Fortress. Without organized and disciplined resistance, the Homer Soldiers were simply no match for these fierce combat beasts, and not to mention a rampaging metal magic puppet disrupting the battlefield, no one could stop the collapse of the Homer Army.
"Fantastic! Mihailovich, your magic puppet should be credited first! Oh, no, it was Mr. Sheferley’s Dark Night Mist that should be credited first. Without your air magic, the people of Homer wouldn’t have fallen into chaos so quickly. Hehe, and Mr. Mihailovich, your psychic magic was also timed to perfection. It seems our first battle as the Caucasian Mage Group will be marked by an unimaginably complete victory!" Komer, in his excitement, was unusually talkative, and his face flushed with a rare color. The outcome was sealed; the battle for Takros Fortress was drawing to a close, and what remained was to reap the fruits of victory.
The battle for Takros ended with such a tragic scene. The Knights of the Nirvana Knights regiment who rushed over could only catch the tail end of a mournful conclusion. The Caucasus’s surprise attack had cost them their best opportunity, and together with the Homer infantry’s rout, the Nirvana Knights were rushed into a hasty encounter with the Half-beastmen Army, which had been the reserve force all along.
"Woodhardt, is this the surprise you promised me?! Do you still have the face to come back and see me? You’ve completely defiled the honor of the Half-beastmen. Do you think you still deserve to wear the military emblem on your body?!"
Komer, barely able to contain his rage, was nearly exploding with fury. The joy of victory at Takros Fortress was utterly washed away by this bad news, and his chilling gaze burned into the Half-beast Chief, who no longer knew what to do. His thick lips trembled constantly, for Woodhardt would rather face the sharp spears of the knights with his chest than the blazing anger of the Lord. The frosty glimmer in the Lord’s eyes seemed to make his mighty body nearly cower and curl up.
"Lord Komer, please calm your anger. This defeat should be my fault; I did not anticipate that the Nirvana Knights would arrive so quickly, and such an encounter in the wild is indeed more favorable to them, especially when we were totally unprepared." Fran knew that Komer’s anger was not solely because of this insignificant defeat; losing more than three hundred Half-beast soldiers was bearable for Caucasus. Komer’s greater frustration was due to contrasting this time with the victory of the Barbarian Army, which undoubtedly felt like a slap in his face. Before earning the complete loyalty and respect of the Barbarians, Komer had hoped more for the Half-beastmen to earn merit for him, but the unlucky Woodhardt had taught Komer such a lesson.
