Chapter 746: Volume 22: Revival and Rise Chapter 6: The Deceptive Appearance of a Dragon
"The world will shake for you?!" Komer looked at them with a mix of laughter and disbelief, feeling that their statement was a huge joke. Why do members of the Dragon Clan always seem so arrogantly self-important? They seemed to have entirely forgotten that the world no longer was what it once had been. Though individual strength might be formidable, when facing the organized, stratified, and intelligent collective power of society, any individual power becomes negligible. Faced with humanity’s ever-evolving manufacturing and innovation capabilities, along with the continual progress in magic, martial arts, and technology, the combined strength of mortals, dwarves, beastmen, and barbarians—if focusing solely on the Dragon Clan—had increased manifold. And with the pathetic reproductive abilities of the Dragon Clan, they were nothing more than targets for human adventurers’ secretive attacks.
It seemed that Komer’s pitiful and disdainful gaze struck a nerve with Shatima, who placed her hands on her hips, losing the grace of a dignified lady, "Komer, why do you look at me with such a gaze? Am I wrong? You might be considered one of the best among your mortals, but when it comes to one-on-one combat, am I not your opponent? And people like Solonberg and Vladimir Koff, who are considered the powerhouses of your human world, they’re one in a million, but they stand no chance when I am fully restored! And I’m just an ordinary member within our Ice Dragon Clan, which isn’t even the strongest among the dragon races. With my strength, when up against your human soldiers, a few hundred, maybe even a thousand wouldn’t be enough! In front of us, humans are like ants, not worth mentioning at all!"
"Shatima, you’re not wrong. Neither I nor Solonberg could stand against you in a one-on-one fight, but why did you end up captured by me? You couldn’t even handle those Jellyfish People, has the Dragon Clan really fallen so low?" Komer laughed casually, "But we humans have always been social creatures. Division of labor and organized social life are the fundamental characteristics of Mortal Society. How can you discuss these issues while disregarding such objective factors? Besides, the strength of a race or nation isn’t solely represented in the form of war—there are many other aspects, such as the development of culture, economy, and art. However, I’ve neither heard of nor seen any of these reflected among the Dragon Clan. Even in the form of war, I don’t think the Dragon Clan stands any chance against humanity’s organized art of warfare. Of course, you can’t expect every battlefield conflict to be decided by the rigid form of knightly duels, can you?"
Komer’s words rapidly eroded the already shaky confidence of Shatima, who stared at him, dumbfounded, before finally looking down dejectedly, her hands dropping listlessly from her hips. Evidently, Shatima’s mood hadn’t fully calmed down yet.
"Komer, you truly are a demon! Can’t you speak a little more tactfully? Don’t you always tell me that in your human society, you value manners and keeping a lady in good spirits? Why do you always ruin my good mood?!" Shatima glared at Komer, her voice full of spite.
"Oh, Shatima, keeping a lady in good spirits is indeed important, but uttering deceitful flattery would be both unkind and against my conscience. I wouldn’t want to leave the impression of being a hypocritical and insincere little man in Shatima’s mind," Komer shrugged and said, "Actually, there’s no need for you to cling so stubbornly to the status of your Dragon Clan. Every species living in this world is part of the Creator God’s plan—survival of the fittest is the natural order. There is nothing wrong with your clan living in such a way. Of course, it’s every individual’s freedom to strive and change themselves for their ideals and pursuits. Shatima, you can choose your own traditional way of life, or you can choose to change yourself—that’s your right. However, personally, I believe it’s better to strive to change one’s destiny than to live a mediocre life; that makes life far more interesting and exciting."
"To struggle and compete for various interests, just like you mortals?" Shatima’s mouth twitched into a wry smile.
"Heh heh, Shatima, it’s endless fun to combat the heavens, and just as enjoyable to combat with mortals. Only you yourself can know the flavor of such experiences," Komer also laughed, "Your Dragon Clan’s life is too bland. Since you’ve taken on a mortal form, then follow me into the intricate and unpredictable struggles of human society and savor the pleasure within."
The days at sea were tranquil and relaxed, departing from Mattdam and heading north along the Nether Sea, crossing the Mouth of Nissai River. Throughout the journey, one could see a considerable amount of traffic to and from Bruce Fortress, with bulk carriers loaded with ore, crude iron, timber, and coal streaming out of the Mouth of Nissai River incessantly, while ships filled with food, fabrics, salt, and other daily necessities continuously entered. It was indeed a bustling sight.
Upon entering the influence of Homer, the terrain’s alteration was palpable. The lengthy coastline transformed into a vague curve, devoid of the undulations of the Leon Region and the Great Greenland Forest. As the breadbasket of not only Homer but the entire Kingdom of Nicosia, the flat topography of the Busen Plain ensured its grain production maintained a crucial role within the kingdom.
Odessa lay amidst the hinterland of the Busen Plain, serving as the port of greatest importance on this plain and shouldering the significant responsibility of input and output of goods for the southern hinterlands of Homer. Traveling up the Odessa river into the heart of the Busen Plain, although the speed was slightly decreased, the passage was much more comfortable for passengers.
Gutenberg. Gazing at a distant residence ablaze with lights, Komer pondered for a long while and ultimately decided to leave. It seemed irrational to meet with Vero at this time. Although Komer trusted Vero would not divulge his whereabouts, he was worried that her unintentional behavior might alert that old fox, Zellin, to something. Komer would rather endure this torment for now, believing it might be more appropriate to meet either in Flanders or on Xifnos Island, and that day would not need to be awaited for too long.
When Komer entered Jazair City, he believed no one could recognize him. The deliberately grown beard, artfully trimmed to make Komer suddenly seem much more mature; the gold-wire glasses perched on the bridge of his nose adding an air of authority; his hairstyle also specially styled to make Komer appear at least a decade older; and the tailored gentlemen’s evening attire along with the velvet high-top boots covering the deer leather short boots – and not to forget the ravishing young woman tightly linked to Komer’s side – all made him look every inch a nobleman from out of town.
The four-wheeled horse-drawn carriage smoothly traveled through the streets of Jazair. Despite the attacks by the Beastmen, Jazair still obstinately showcased its splendor as a premier metropolis of the Northern Continent. The lofty and magnificent spire churches, the solemn yet ornate Basilica Palace, the rising jets from the central street fountains, the pleasant chimes from the wind bells hanging on the tower corners, and the distinctively styled noble residences, each detail incrementally divulged its glory and brilliance.
"Is this the hall that you humans long for?" Shatima was not aware that Komer’s breathing had become somewhat rapid; at this moment, Shatima curiously peered through the glass of the carriage window, observing the bustling site that was said to determine the fate of the entire Kingdom of Nicosia.
"Yes, you could say that. Indeed, countless people yearn to become the master of this place, hoping to create beautiful memories of life here, but not everyone can find the satisfactory life they seek here," Komer said indifferently.
"Are you referring to them?" Incongruities always seemed to appear at just the right moments; several beggars and vagabonds were sprawled lazily under the church steps, bathing in the sunlight. Shatima pointed in their direction, "Did they also come here in search of a beautiful life?"
"Oh, no, no, they belong here; perhaps some of them are even related by blood to His Majesty the King and Lord Bishop; there might even be some among them who possess titles of nobility," Komer said playfully.
"Incredible!" Seeing Komer’s expression did not seem feigned, Shatima, though dumbfounded and not very accurate in her understanding of human society, also knew the sort of life that nobles of high lineage were supposed to lead. The scene before her seemed to overturn her understanding.
"The complexity of human society far exceeds your imagination; isn’t there an ancient adage? ’Never trust anything you haven’t seen with your own eyes, and even if you have witnessed it, you should not believe it.’ This saying perhaps sums up everything," Komer took a deep breath, with the fragrance emanating from Shatima’s body bearing the unique scent of the Dragon Clan.
"Then what can we believe in?" Shatima said indignantly.
"Believe in causality, believe in intuition," Komer said succinctly.
"Where are we going now?" Although Shatima had chewed over Komer’s profound words for quite some time, she still could not really understand the mysteries within, and spoke in a sullen tone.
"We’re going where we need to go," Komer said offhandedly.
"Go to hell!" Shatima finally exploded in rage, her chest heaving so violently it nearly burst her neckline.
"Just a joke, maintaining composure is the very least a lady should adhere to," Komer chuckled lightly.
"Even when being raped?" Shatima’s counter hit Komer with surprise; indeed, dragons should not be judged by their appearance.
