Chapter 713: Volume Twenty: Wolf in the Mediterranean Chapter Nineteen: Composite Armor
Vladimir Koff shook the anti-magic armor he hesitantly wore, which didn’t seem to have changed much. Even the weight was largely imperceptible. The only alterations were apparently some special processing on the breastplate’s mirror and the beast head swallowing ring on each shoulder.
"Lord, are you saying that I can use this set of anti-magic armor to counter the opponent’s Sword Qi?" Vladimir Koff asked incredulously, tilting his head towards the two sleep-deprived figures standing before him.
"Well, we could say that, Mr. Mihailovich has specially modified your anti-magic armor in such a way that it has fundamentally altered its nature. It’s actually now a composite armor with a magic puppet. Not only does it retain the original efficacy of your armor, but it has also added significantly effective features to some special parts, which could even prove to be fatal moves under certain circumstances," Komer nodded, introducing the situation to the first user of the composite armor, "For specifics, let Mr. Mihailovich explain to you."
"Er, Mr. Vladimir Koff, following the Lord’s instructions, I modified your armor, incorporating passive-reactive magic puppets in the shoulders and chest where you are most likely to be attacked. You might infer from the name that if these areas are struck, a magical puppet set in your armor will trigger, automatically retaliating against the attacker without the need for you to perform any specific action. You can continue with all you are meant to do, and even have the puppet activated work with you, or have your attack coordinate with the puppet’s, creating a combined assault depending on the situation and your will. That’s basically it."
Mihailovich, seeing the blank look on the other’s face, knew that the fellow wouldn’t understand the passive-reactive composite armor from such dull, abstract terms, and no amount of explanation would make this armor perform miracles in battle—only practical application could truly illustrate what this armor could do for him.
"Er, how about this, Mr. Vladimir Koff, I think we need to conduct a few more field experiments before you can fully appreciate the true efficacy of this armor. Why don’t we pick a location and ask Mr. Solonberg to act as the attacker, and have a real tussle to feel the use in actual combat?"
"Mm, Mr. Mihailovich, I’ll leave this matter to you. I need to rest for a while. Mr. Vladimir Koff, take the time to explore and ponder the armor with Mr. Mihailovich, and if there are any modifications needed, make them promptly. We don’t have much time. In this Gladiator Competition, we represent the Piraeus City-State, and nearly everyone besides the Spartans hopes we can deliver another resounding slap to the face of the Spartans. I hope we can achieve that."
In fact, Komer and Mihailovich had already tested it twice, with pretty impressive results. The Illusory Puppet might be insignificant to magicians, but its sudden release in the midst of tense hand-to-hand combat could often confuse the enemy’s vision. Of course, the Illusory Puppet was just a decoy; the real trump card lay on the shoulders of the anti-magic armor, where the Diamond Arrows, set in a certain arrangement, took Mihailovich half the night to install by hand, even with Komer assisting. Once triggered by certain conditions, this insignificant-looking device could play a pivotal role in combat.
With an elegant retraction of his Knight Spear, Solonberg’s fierce thrust effortlessly shattered the opponent’s thick Purified Iron Shield. The overwhelming force, bursting through the bin iron armor, howled as it spun the Dwarf Warrior out of the ring, with traces of blood spilling from his darkened face, heralding the foregone conclusion of the battle.
The strongest Dwarf Warrior of the Severo Kingdom clearly wasn’t at the same level under the assault of Solonberg’s Fighting Qi. Although the fierce wind brought forth by his two-handed axe was equally astonishing, it disappeared without a trace near Solonberg. The light Fighting Qi surging around Solonberg was like a natural stronghold, completely suppressing the unique Force of the dwarf’s bravery against the Fighting Qi of a mortal expert. The bone-chilling Qi of the Knight Spear left deep marks on the ground, and the defeated Dwarf Warrior, with his face filled with reluctance, could only clench his teeth and resist against the powerful onslaught. But it was clear to any discerning observer that the knight in grey hadn’t even fully exerted himself, and his Knight Spear’s casual swings had already left his opponent gasping for breath.
The final strike ultimately dispelled any illusions held by the dwarfs. Their desire to demonstrate their dwarven strength in this mortal competition was doomed to fail. Each of the dwarfs’ efforts had ended abruptly in the playoffs, regardless of whether it was the Kingdom of Shimaina or the Severo Kingdom. Although their efforts had never received much recognition, they never gave up on these pursuits, something that many mortal countries and cities deeply respected.
Vladimir Koff’s opponent was a swordmaster from the Corinth City-State. It was an even more thrilling close-combat battle, as his opponent had clearly advanced from martial power into the realm of martial arts, his style resembling the grand and unrestrained manner typical of the North. Sword qi whirled and slashed through the air, shrouding the entire competition stage in a maelstrom of winds and fracturing sword energy.
Yet, all this seemed to Vladimir Koff more like a performance. Had he not wished to use this exhilarating method to elevate his senses to an even higher level, he could have easily knocked his opponent off the stage in three moves. He knew, however, that his next match might well pit him against the strongest contenders—among the four racers from the Kingdom of Sparta who had advanced directly were two pupils of Aristotle himself. They were his real enemies, and it seemed that aside from Aristotle, the only other person renowned across the Continent as a Martial Saint was that legendary figure from the western edge of the Continent.
The sharp sword qi encountered fierce resistance in front of Vladimir Koff. He consciously used his opponent’s sword qi to stimulate his own defensive power, continuously breaking through and then repairing, the fierce sword qi and the fierce wind always whirling and dancing around Vladimir Koff. However, each explosive surge from his Knight Spear forced the Corinthian warrior to retreat in defeat, his once bold and unrestrained energy now a tumbling river in retreat, nearly robbing the Corinthian of the courage to continue the fight.
This sort of quasi-mocking combat was undoubtedly insulting for a warrior. Fortunately, Vladimir Koff soon wrapped up this deliberate exercise. His Knight Spear suddenly burst with a cyan-gray Light Mist, its Fighting Qi instantly materializing through the spear. The magnificent burst of spear force collided with the already nearly incensed Corinthian warrior’s onrushing sword qi.
In the clear space, a strange color appeared in its wake. Vladimir Koff, who retreated after the clash, looked somewhat fondly at his Knight Spear before turning his gaze to his opponent. On the other side, still unable to find his footing after several steps back, the opponent wore a flushed face, his bulging eyes fixated on the emotionless Vladimir Koff, as if trying to discern something.
As the dust settled at the epicenter of their clashing powers on the stage, a huge olive-shaped indentation revealed the tremendous force it had withstood. The Corinthian warrior ultimately bowed his head to inspect his own shattered armor and gracefully conceded defeat. Compared to his calm and collected opponent, the outcome was clear; any further dispute would have bordered on shameless behavior.
The true contestant from the Great Mysterium Sect also emerged victorious, though the win came exceedingly hard. Known across the Continent, the warriors of Iberia wanted to show they hadn’t been cowed by the Barbarian invasion, sending their strongest court warrior. However, they were unlucky to face a Martial Arts Expert from the Great Mysterium Sect intent on demonstrating his prowess in this event. The martial arts of the Great Mysterium Expert were somewhat unorthodox, yet his Fighting Qi was certainly no heterodoxy. His Flame Thunder Fighting Energy, possessing both fire force and a natural resistance to thunder-based magic attacks, made victory a natural conclusion. Even Komer was surprised that such a martial arts powerhouse existed within the Great Mysterium. Still, under the fierce counterattack of the Iberian court warrior, the Expert paid a significant price to secure his win.
The Piraeus people’s resounding success in the Gladiator Playoffs once again stunned the whole of Athens City. No one had expected the previously low-key Piraeus people to lay hidden with the ambition to make a spectacular mark at this Olympian festival. Not only did they claim the crown in the Chariot Race, but they also directly challenged the position the Spartans took pride in, within the Gladiator Competition. Of the eight contestants entering the second round of playoffs, they shared an equal number of spots with the Spartans, leaving only two slots for the Iberians and the Corinthians.
The authoritative rise of the Piraeus people became the main topic of discussion for officials and nobles from all the Nations and City-States Gathered in Athens City during their leisure time. Meanwhile, a cloud hung over the heads of the Spartans; regardless of who would win in the end, the Piraeus people had proven with their strength that they had become a formidable force in the Southern Mediterranean. Although not every country had sent their top experts to this event, the level displayed by the three contestants who made it to the second round of playoffs was enough for everyone to weigh how many such powerful individuals existed within each of their countries.
