Chapter 700: Volume Twenty: Wolf in the Atlantic Chapter Eight: Add Head

"According to Mr. Baski, that piece of land is quite large, at least a thousand square kilometers, so I was quite surprised," Komer nodded as if he had understood something. "What a shame, such a large piece of land turns out to be worthless."

"Indeed, Mr. Karadin, it is a pity. The Flanders Valley was originally a fertile valley situated between two mountain ridges, not only full of orchards, but also an important flax production area. It was the ancestral territory of the Marquis of Solomon, and in the end, it was mortgaged to the Barbarossa Family. The Iberian Kingdom was furious over the deal, but under the pressure of the Barbarossa Family, they ultimately accepted the transaction, agreeing to enfeoff the new owner of that land with noble status. However, this is completely nominal and meaningless. If the Gdansk Fortress hadn’t been destroyed, a giveaway? Hmm, even Kapok Castle and Crystal Castle wouldn’t be grand enough to be added as a bonus," Kamado said with a hint of contempt. "Do you think Baski would be that generous?"

"Hmm, I see. I also found it not quite believable, which is why I came to seek your opinion," Komer responded with a smile.

"However, Mr. Karadin, Kapok Castle and Crystal Castle, along with their associated pastures and forests, are indeed excellent. 500,000 gold shields is a great deal. If you really intend to purchase a property in Athens, I advise you to consider it. The area is close to the suburbs of Athens City and suitably distanced for either residency or investment. But I suggest you refuse Flanders Valley; it’s worthless. However, you could try to push down the price for Kapok Castle and Crystal Castle, Baski might accept between 400,000 to 450,000 gold shields."

A peculiar smile appeared on Kamado’s lips. "This loan was personally handled by Baski, and now because all the Athenians want to drive down the price to purchase those two castles, and deliberately don’t want to take over, the Barbarossa Family internally considers this loan to be a bad deal, putting significant pressure on Baski to handle these properties, making him quite uncomfortable. He is eager to restore his image within the family, and thus he won’t be too particular about the price."

Nodding in understanding, Komer was actually more interested in that parcel of land in the northwest of the Iberian Kingdom—more than a thousand square kilometers, sizable enough to be considered a substantial territory. Hadn’t he always hoped to find an appropriate entry point in the south of the Continent? Here was such an ideal location, ready-made, though he didn’t know the specific circumstances there yet.

"Mr. Kamado, if Flanders Valley has been occupied by barbarians, it would be meaningless. So why would Baski dare offer it as a supplement to the deal? Doesn’t he fear that a little inquiry on my part would reveal the truth? Isn’t that a kind of mockery?" Komer inquired with feigned nonchalance.

"Hehe, Mr. Karadin, the Flanders Valley is not without value. First of all, the barbarians have not occupied it; they have only destroyed the Gdansk Fortress that defended the region from invasion. Barbarians are not interested in a valley that does not produce food. In name, Flanders Valley is still part of the Iberian Kingdom; it’s just that no one dares to accept this territory. What’s truly valuable is the halo of the lordship over Flanders Valley. If you legally own Flanders Valley, it means you are recognized as a noble by the Iberian Kingdom and could even be granted a title. However, the noble status of the Iberian Kingdom isn’t of much value to us Spartains, maybe the Iberians would be interested, but not now. The fires of war with barbarians have reached their doorstep, and I doubt anyone has the leisure to consider this issue at this time."

Kamado’s explanation finally made Komer understand the true value of Flanders Valley—it was, after all, of no value to these people from the south. Perhaps the only value was the noble status that came with being the lord of Flanders Valley.

"Oh, I see. It seems Flanders really isn’t of much value. Of course, any common person who is interested in noble status might consider donning the halo of the Lord of Flanders," Komer was already pondering how significant Flanders Valley could be for him. Kapok Castle and Crystal Castle were just temporary shelters, but Flanders Valley would be an important base, within the boundaries of the Iberian Kingdom yet close to the Cordillera Wilderness, practically under the control of barbarians. Its special location indeed made it an excellent hideout for him.

"Perhaps, but in the Iberian Kingdom, it seems you can buy a title with just 30,000 to 50,000 gold shields. Finding such a gullible individual won’t be easy," Kamado chuckled casually.

The fast sailing ship gradually drew closer to the city becoming clearer in the distance. Nestled against the mountain and beside the water, the urban architecture undulated, resembling a massive complex of palaces built upon a mountain range. The Kephisos River and Ilissos River encircle Athens City before merging into the Akmon River. The city’s three famous hills represent the residential areas of various social classes.

The residential area centered around Nimphs Mountain is where the Palace of the Kingdom of Sparta and the main official residences are located, with the secular nobles also residing in this area. Likavitos Mountain is inhabited by the emerging industrial and commercial class and cultural and artistic elites. The highest Mount Acropolis is a holy site, with the centuries-old Temple of Goddess of Wisdom Athena and the Dark Temple as well as the idols of Vulcan, the forging god, and Bacchus, the god of wine, attracting worshippers. As the caretakers of these temples, religious individuals, and their devout followers, cluster around Mount Acropolis. The common people’s homes spread across the lowlands surrounding these hills.

As the fast sailing ship arrived at the dock outside Athens City, Komer had already become quite familiar with Baski. One was deliberately befriending, the other had the intention to get to know each other. They hit it off immediately, and Baski almost immediately seemed to see the glittering gold shields waving at him, even though Komer was still holding off on immediately agreeing to sign the contract to purchase Kapok Castle and Crystal Castle.

After accepting Baski’s cordial invitation, Komer politely bid farewell to this important member of the Barbarossa Family. Declining Kamado’s arranged accommodations, he was not yet accustomed to living in someone else’s home. Instead, he preferred to choose an inn that allowed him to better appreciate and experience the ambiance of Athens as a temporary abode.
