Chapter 650: Volume Eighteen: Stormy Secrets, Chapter One: Dual Origins
Upon receiving news from Mandu, Komer grew anxious and restless. Although the messages from Eve and Finitz were encouraging, Komer believed the Court’s people wouldn’t just simply accept the opinions of some outsiders and dispel their suspicions. The fact that they had traveled from Mandu to Muscat proved this point; they would also conduct a thorough investigation in Caucasus. These two were not like the Thunderhorse Knights, bound by a knight’s creed—they were seasoned investigators, especially sensitive to the presence of Dark Force. Once they found anything suspicious, they would investigate at all costs. At that time, deciding what to do with Caucasus would be truly challenging.
Komer was plagued by worry. Although Eve and Finitz had done their utmost, Komer felt they could have done better. He could sense Eve’s deep-seated reluctance, but perhaps because of his passable performance in Caucasus and with Leon, she reluctantly agreed to a plan that was somewhat unilluminated. Correcting the bias of two senior Court officials was important and difficult; as long as some hostility could be mitigated, and they could view Caucasus with a relatively impartial mood, that would suffice. Komer believed he had already put much effort into Caucasus: erasing what needed to be erased, eliminating those who had to leave, and hiding what needed to be hidden, all in anticipation of those two officials’ arrival.
Rebury hadn’t left. Although he appeared indifferent when Komer informed him about the impending arrival of the Court’s people, Rebury’s attitude seemed a bit odd after hearing the names. It was a look of melancholy, confusion, and a persistent aftertaste, albeit brief. Komer sharply picked up on it, not knowing why Rebury would exhibit such emotions. But seeing that Rebury had no desire to answer, Komer tactfully refrained from asking further. Nonetheless, Komer believed that Rebury wouldn’t joke with his own life and trusted in his capability. Since Rebury was so certain, he naturally had a way to cope.
Mihailovich, Newman, Solonberg, and Vladimir Koff had already left Caucasus for the Cordillera Wilderness to hunt dragons, accompanied by Uma, Lome, and that beautiful Ice Dragon. The Wicked Dragon appeared again in the Baden Gold Mountain Range, and the Great Mysterium Sect reported that now was the best opportunity. To slay that formidable Wicked Dragon, even the Great Mysterium Sect felt somewhat inadequate, so Komer simply dispatched several dangerous individuals to taste the primitive charm of the Barbarian Territory within the Cordillera Wilderness. He believed that after encountering the power he controlled, the Sanjia Tribe’s barbarian priests and witches would collaborate with him even more wholeheartedly.
Komer didn’t want Lome to leave, and she didn’t wish to go either. But Komer knew that the Court’s people could easily detect Lome’s anomalies, and though they might not recognize her appearance, her inner magic origin wouldn’t escape their keen eyes. Thus, Komer reluctantly sent Lome to the Cordillera Wilderness.
Lome had become a part of Komer’s life. More accurately, she was gradually blending into his life. Especially as Komer felt his status in Caucasus and with Leon increasingly solidified and the crisis fading, he seemed to become more fond or indulgent in his old ways—simply put, he started to like beautiful women more. Lome and Grace became Komer’s prey; Lome’s gentle and considerate nature contrasted with Grace’s fiery and explosive personality, clearly two extremes. Yet Lome could share Komer’s bed unrestrained by anyone’s opinion, while Grace faced many restrictions. Her companions’ gazes forced her to constrain her behavior, especially since Eve’s attitude had been a heavy stone in Grace’s heart.
Perhaps everything would go smoothly except for this one hurdle. Komer mused to himself that he could never avoid it—the Court’s people would definitely contact him up close. If he were to dodge and hide, it would only raise greater suspicion. It would be better to meet them head-on and dispel their doubts to the maximum extent. But could he conceal the magic origin deeply rooted within him from the Court’s people? Komer wasn’t entirely certain; unlike Rebury, he was sure that Rebury’s magic origin stemmed from Light Magic, which in later stages, deviated, incorporating Dark Force. Just like himself, Rebury seemed to be constantly exploring how to transform Dark Magic Power and Light Magic. However, he had powerful Dark Origin Magic Power and wished to freely convert it into Light Magic, while Rebury was the opposite.
The most straightforward and reliable method to determine a mage’s nature was to detect the origin of their Mana (Magic Power). If one could ascertain the fundamental nature of their Mana, they could almost deduce which type of mage they were. Generally, mages can only cast magic and other types of spells that align with their magic core. Usually, when casting large-scale or high-tier magic, they must use their core magic power. Most mages can only use their innate magic, except for some Senior Magicians or gifted Magic Practitioners, who can wield large-scale and high-tier magic of two or more attributes. Even an Archmage would face considerable risks casting large-scale or high-tier spells beyond their element.
Rebury’s original mana stemmed from Light magic power, which could easily be disguised with some minor alterations, hiding past traces left by dark magic power on him. These traces were not significant, and concealing them was not a difficult task. However, I was different. Even though the light magic I displayed was more grand and cautious than anyone around me, full of majestic splendor, only I knew that this was but a deception that could fool ordinary magic practitioners. It couldn’t even deceive Rebury, let alone those from the Court with their nearly divine abilities of perception and detection. They could effortlessly explore the core of my origin, and once they confirmed that I was affiliated with the darkness, my doom would be upon me.
Of course, Komer would not sit idly by and wait for death. In fact, he had already been researching this issue for quite some time. To survive under the current conditions where the Church of Light’s power was overwhelmingly dominant, he had no choice but to seek a way of protection. If there was no absolute certainty of overcoming one’s opponents, one had to consider how to handle them. Light and darkness have never compromised, and Komer never hoped to bribe or convert those two from the Court. For them, faith was glory, glory was life, and their worship of the God of Light penetrated every bit of their thoughts and blood. Nothing could change their beliefs, not even the Pope of the Church of Light himself.
The only way was to deceive, which is why Komer had planned such a mysterious scheme, and Eve and Finitz’s performances were merely a part of it. Now the first step had succeeded. Eve and Finitz had initially diminished the hostility and prejudice of the others, but the critical core still lay within me.
Long ago, Komer began pondering whether he could transform the vast magic power left to him by Kennifer III. I could only use a part of this abundant magic power; a large portion was still running rampant within me, unrestrained. Yet, my spiritual power’s level restricted my ability to manipulate such massive magic power. As a result, Komer considered whether he could reshape another origin of mana within his body. Kennifer III’s magic power was incredibly diverse. Undoubtedly, he was a genius among geniuses in the magic world. Dark origin power was certainly dominant, but there were also many elemental magic powers mixed within, and even a portion of light magic power. The dark magic power had gradually molded the current origin of my magic power within Komer’s body, but other magics were also largely suppressed. Komer had always tried to find a balance, but without a magic origin as a foundation, no matter how hard he tried, all magic powers were suppressed by the dark origin.
Therefore, Komer also pondered whether he could create an origin outside of the dark origin, be it a light origin or an elemental mana origin. This idea was undeniably heretical; even a layperson unversed in magic knew it was impossible. Attempting a dual origin in a body with limited mana was akin to playing with fire, approaching madness. The conflict of magic powers would immediately send any cultivator into demonic cultivation. There were indeed some geniuses who had tried, but they had vanished without even crossing the first barrier, so there was no lore on the subject, as no one took interest in such suicidal acts. Kennifer III only managed to make different kinds of mana coexist, as had some Great Mages and other powerful individuals, but even they likely wouldn’t dare try shaping a dual origin.
Yet, it seemed that Komer wanted to challenge this notion, his reasoning based on obtaining parchment scrolls and some books from Damarlinsk Castle. These books belonged to Kennifer III, who appeared to have done some research in this area. Kennifer stopped short and clearly did not succeed, but the data and experiential insights he left behind provided Komer with clues for further exploration, with the key being how to resolve and balance the conflict of magic powers.
