Chapter 642: Volume Seventeen: Dark Descends on Earth - Thirteen: Deep Water

"The force that could be from the Church of Light has already sent a representative to warn us not to break the agreement, and we have also received some unfavorable information from Dashler. So I believe now is the time for us to retreat." Shami’s calm and powerful gaze first quieted Mouni and Moda, while Carter and Christine, although still discontented, were eager to hear the insider information from the Snake Tribe when Shami mentioned the intelligence from Dashler.

Seeing everyone’s gaze turn towards him, Dashler Schnecke slightly shifted his body uncomfortably, and his cold, ruthless expression would make anyone uneasy. The Snake Tribe had always been an outlying tribe among the Beastmen, never fully integrating into the Beamon Clan, but just as everyone was tired of the tribe’s cold aura, they would find that the Beamon Kingdom seemingly could never do without them.

"The forces supporting our move southward might be the people from the Church of Light and some countries from the Western Alliance of the Northern Alliance of Mortal Country, who are dissatisfied with the Nicosia Kingdom’s policies on religious beliefs and have thus joined hands. Additionally, other participants include the powers of the Great Lords who are discontent with the central policies of the Nicosia Kingdom; they have come together hoping to use our Beamon Army to strike a blow to the Central Government of the Nicosia Kingdom, to shatter Nicosia’s control, so that they might achieve their respective goals." Dashler’s tone was always lifeless, "But now a new situation has arisen, the Nicosia royal family still has considerable influence throughout the Kingdom of Nicosia, and about twenty thousand private armies of various lords have already gathered around Jazair, particularly headed by the armies from the southern Caucasus and Leon regions of the Nicosia Homer Province."

"Homer?" The Fox Tribe Queen quickly grasped the significance, "Wasn’t it said that the Four Great Lords were also involved in this conspiracy? Why would the Homer Army appear in Jazair?"

"Christine, this army does not belong to Homer, but to a minor lord who has been bought out by the Central Kingdom. You may all have heard that the region is dominated by Beamon half-breed mongrels, so this army is also mainly made up of those mongrels," Shami said, a trace of disdain in his eyes. The Half-beastmen have never been taken seriously by the Beamon Clan; in the hearts of the Beamon, those Half-beastmen are even more despicable and filthy than the Mortals, a race without ancestors, such a race living on the Continent is simply a mistake, and they should be erased from this land.

"Oh?" Shami’s remarks immediately surprised everyone. Mortal lords daring to use Half-beastmen as an army was simply unheard of, something that had never happened in history before.

"It is because of this minor lord’s initiation that so many forces have been gathered for the Nicosia Kingdom. Although these armies are uneven in combat strength, they can be quite effective for defense, and it is said that this mongrel army has even defeated the Homer Army, but the inside story is not yet clear." Dashler continued, ignoring everyone’s surprise, attending to his duty, "The armies of the Four Great Lords are also moving frequently, probably fearing that we will take advantage of the situation and move south. In addition, some countries in the Western Alliance in the West are also actively preparing for war, probably all aimed at us."

"Hmph, these Mortals are set on using us, and once they are done, they want to cast us aside – as if it were that easy," Moda Bill grumbled angrily.

"But for now, we still need to accept this reality. If the Church of Light continues to firmly stand by the Kingdom of Nicosia, it’s impossible for us to achieve such splendid success – our losses would not be so minimal, and we might even face failure. We understand this point very well. Once we fall out with the Church of Light, they will quickly unite the Four Great Lords of Nicosia and the countries of the Northern Alliance against us, and we can imagine the consequences," Shami continued, clearly seeing further ahead than just the present moment or location. For the Beamon Kingdom, the conflict with Mortals was just beginning; for centuries Beamon had been in a state of primal accumulation, only now entering a stage of direct confrontation. There was plenty of time and opportunities ahead; if they could just secure their footing and move step by step, one day they would have the chance to set foot on this land again, and it would not be so easy then.

Shami Taegor’s serene words quieted everyone. Though they too yearned to trample over those contemptible Mortals soon, they must now temporarily withdraw. Mortal power was still quite formidable, and only when they completely fell apart, when no force could bring them together, would it be the Beamon Kingdom’s chance. Right now, although the Church of Light was beginning to decline, it could still effectively accomplish this.

"By the way, Dashler, everything is arranged on your side, right? The Mortals to the North of Nicosia are now migrating south in large numbers, which is a great opportunity not to be missed," said Shami Taegor. He knew these words might seem like he doubted the Snake Tribe’s ability, but the matter was too important, and he needed the others to know he was not without backup plans. Otherwise, retreating without fanfare could lead the others to mutter about his possible weakness.

"Hmm, do not worry about that. We started planning for this as soon as we captured St. Nicholas Fortress. Please trust the professional level of us from the Snake Tribe," Dashler said, maintaining his usual indifference, but Shami still heard the displeasure in the other man’s voice.

"Dashler, I do not mean to question the exceptional skills of the Snake Tribe’s sons, but this matter is linked to our next step. You and I both understand the importance of this issue, I must remind you," said Shami, smiling apologetically at the frost-faced Snake Tribe Chief. This gesture touched the Fox Tribe Queen and the Wolf Clan Leader, and even Carter believed he could not have done it – to apologize to a subordinate, it was a face he could not bring himself to lose.

```
"It doesn’t matter, I believe our Snake Tribe warriors will be able to bring satisfactory results to the Beamon Kingdom," Dashler said, clearly pleased with the nuanced apology from the other party, his usually indifferent face softened slightly.
"Christine, I heard you acquired some books at Saint Nicholas Fortress. Was the speech you just gave inspired by those books?" The Tiger Clan King’s eyes rested upon the face of the Fox tribe queen.
"Yes, those books gave me a lot to think about. They also made me realize that there are still many areas where the Beamon Kingdom lags behind the human world. Although not everything is worth learning or imitating, there are indeed many aspects that are our weaknesses. I think we should seriously consider these issues," the Fox tribe queen was surprised by Shami’s astuteness. In her view, even though the Tiger Clan King surpassed Carter in magnanimity and breadth of heart, and was merely on par with Carter in terms of intelligence, she did not expect him to be so meticulous in his thinking, guessing the reason behind her inspiration after just one speech.
"Very good, it seems those books are of great use. Take them back and let me read them. Moreover, everyone here must thoroughly read the books of mortals. Only by understanding and learning from them can we ultimately defeat them," Shami Taegor’s final words were strict and forceful, revealing the true demeanor of a sovereign only at such times.
After the others left the tent, only Shami Taegor and the Snake Tribe Chief, Dashler Schnecke, remained. As the head of intelligence for the Beamon Kingdom, he knew the king must have some special tasks or instructions for him.
"Dashler, can you be sure that those who support us are just some influential figures of the Church of Light rather than a unanimous decision of the Church?" This was always one of Shami Taegor’s biggest concerns. To commit the Beamon Kingdom to an uncertain course of action was indeed a test of a king’s wisdom and decisiveness.
"Hmm, their Pope has been in seclusion for a while now, reportedly not meddling much with church affairs in recent years. It’s mostly handled by the two Archbishops, and there’s also a Chief Judge whose status is not inferior to theirs, but he seems not to interfere much with the specific affairs either. I can only say that this matter should be from one of the Archbishops, but I’m unable to determine which one," Dashler answered cautiously.
"Can’t you find out any inclination or tendency from those clues? Since there are two of them managing the church affairs, there should be some differences and disparities, right?" Shami furrowed his brows, making the king-shaped wrinkle on his forehead even more pronounced.
"Mortal thoughts are too cunning; merely analyzing from surface phenomena may lead one into traps, I cannot be certain of this matter," Dashler refused to speculate on this issue.
"Hmm, fair enough. Oh, by the way, what’s the background of that fellow organizing an army with Half-Beastmen?" Shami Taegor struggled with this question for quite some time before bringing it up.
"The information we’ve gathered so far isn’t sufficient to determine the background and capabilities of that individual, but strangely, the leader of his Half-beast Army happens to be a former officer from the Myron Duchy, a country we thought was already extinct," Dashler pondered for a moment before responding, "However, for now, these armies shouldn’t have much impact on us."
"I understand. For now, our focus must still be on the discord between the Four Great Lords and the Kingdom of Nicosia. I predict that even if the Church of Light manages to help Nicosia survive our onslaught, it won’t be long before the Four Great Lords overthrow this puppet that no longer has the power to suppress them. We need to step up our surveillance in this area," Shami explained.
He patted the lean shoulder of the Snake Tribe Chief, a gesture which the latter was not accustomed to, but Shami Taegor enjoyed seeing the discomfort it caused. However, such expressions were rare on Dashler’s face.
