Chapter 631: Volume Seventeen: Dark Descends on Earth - Three: Seizing the City (3)
The magic power that enveloped Uma’s body began to circulate rapidly, but the clothes covering his body concealed everything. The only thing that could be detected was the unusual excitement mixed within the dimly glowing halos in those indifferent pupils, which burst forth with great speed. The formless Dark Magic Force extended infinitely, rapidly expanding among the skeletons and zombies that had already gathered around Uma.
A sense of pride and satisfaction rose in Uma’s heart. It had been a long time since he had directly controlled these undead creatures with his own magic power. He even felt a bit unaccustomed to it. He was never particularly fond of the undead, at most summoning and creating some undead creatures. To use his original magic power to drive the undead, in fact, seemed like merging himself with them. If it weren’t for Komer’s request, Uma would not have been willing to do so, feeling that merging with these lowly undead, even just through magic, was a defilement. He seemed to have forgotten the fact that he was also occupying another undead’s body.
The knights who were gathered around immediately sensed the strange change in the atmosphere. The skeletons seemed to become more aggressive all at once. That was not the problem; the trouble was that the physical strength of the skeletons also seemed to be greatly enhanced. Fighting Qi became less effective against them. Their bodies were like specially forged, even able to withstand a strike from the knights’ swords and spears. Before now, these skeletons should have shattered into pieces, but now their bones only bore a crack or a white mark.
Iron chains, Wolf Tooth Clubs, Broken swords, Rusty Knives, and motley Antique shields—these were the weapons of the skeletons and zombies. After undergoing this strange change, the agility of all skeletons and zombies increased significantly. The black aura that emanated from their bodies spread everywhere, signifying that their innate weapon—corpse poison—could finally be released outward. This made the Light Knights realize the danger that had come.
Corpse poison gas was not some special attack method but a way for undead creatures to emit the inherent toxicity from their bodies. Generally, skeletons and corpses that had not been specially refined were unable to do this. Until now, these skeletons and zombies had not shown any sign of this ability. This proved that these skeletons and corpses did not possess special combat ability. Now, however, with the arrival of that mysterious individual, everything had changed.
Bronin also noticed this change. It was clear that the sneaky man in black was the culprit. If he could be dealt with, then all problems would be readily solved.
Taking a deep breath, Bronin drew out his Knight Spear again. Mejernov also realized this and began to accumulate the last of his nearly exhausted magic power to continuously bless the knight chief. Holy Light wheels kept bursting forth on Bronin, and with each burst, his aura of Holy Light strengthened. Facing these undead creatures, extra caution was necessary. When Mejernov released the last enhancement spell, he did not even have the strength to stand, sitting on the City Wall Merlon with a pale face, gasping for air.
The Knight Cloak helped Bronin to volley into the air and descend from the sky with an ethereal grace. His beautifully flawless posture also bolstered the knights’ confidence. As Bronin wielded the Knight Spear with all his might, it became like a dazzling bright moon, surging down directly toward the man in black standing amid the skeleton group.
Uma smiled slightly, which was actually just in his mind; his face remained expressionless. It was a pity, such a wonderful killing stance could almost serve as a model for the knights to observe. If it was someone else, he might have had a chance to shine, but it was a pity that he had met Uma, which left no opportunity at all.
Bronin kept his eyes fixed on his opponent, the energy of his spear becoming more intense, with a fierce wind howling and vigor splitting the air. He had concentrated all his Fighting Qi into this strike. Amplified by the Holy Light Spell, a three-feet-long Luminous Flame burst forth from the tip of the spear with an overwhelming momentum and crashed down.
With both hands pinched before his chest, Uma made a graceful cross sign, his emotionless gaze coldly watching the flying knight plunge down. Bronin suddenly felt a heavy sink in his whole body. The Knight Cloak was instantly pressed tightly against him, turning his original nimble form extremely sluggish. Startled, he rapidly propelled the Fighting Qi throughout his body, releasing the immense and unrivaled Light Fighting Qi outward.
Uma felt his Dark Magic Gravity Spell slightly loosen and inwardly commended the effort. This knight chief was indeed far more skillful than other knights, still able to strike back in the face of his Dark Magic Gravity Spell. However, escaping from his Dark Magic Force’s grasp wouldn’t be so easy.
The spear’s energy unleashed a sharp wave that crashed down toward Uma. Three skeletons rushed to meet it without hesitation. Under the unstoppable force of the spear energy, the three skeleton officers instantly turned into dust. When the last zombie advanced, the energy of the spear even punched a bowl-sized hole right through the chest of the zombie which, with a slight shake of the spear tip, was thrown ten meters away.
It was only at this moment that Uma really put aside his disdain. The Light Knights truly lived up to their name; their desperate strike was worth seeing, but if they wanted to show off in front of him, they still lacked a bit of mastery.
When the energy of the spear finally broke through all restraints and surged forward, three dark Magic Shields were successively formed in front of Uma, and even Bronin, who was struggling in mid-air, could feel the heavy and obscure breath. This was the true ability of a Dark Magician—a silent and lightless wave-like Dark Blade split everything in front of him, even causing the entire space to distort strangely.
"Dark Blade?!" Komer and Mihailovich exclaimed almost simultaneously, unable to prevent an exchange of astonished glances. This was one of the ultimate techniques within Dark Magic, already capable of materializing the Dark Magic Force into a true weapon of attack instead of merely using Magic power to guide spells against the target.
At the last moment, Bronin finally made the correct response; he retracted his Long Spear to brace it in front of his chest and did his utmost to unleash his Holy Power to face the attack. The black, wave-like strike seemed endlessly dangerous in Bronin’s eyes—he had already sensed the enveloping aura of darkness, and this tangible strike seemed more than enough to send him plummeting into the Abyss.
Mihailovich, his complexion now ashen, also realized this fact. Mages are always more sensitive to attacks filled with a Magic breath than anyone else. When the Dark Magician unleashed his materialized Dark Magic Attack, he knew that Bronin was likely unable to escape disaster this time. Such materialized magic attacks were also something that Mihailovich had only heard of; he had never seen any Mage or Magic Knight achieve this before, yet today he witnessed it.
At this critical juncture, Mihailovich dared not hold anything back. Though his body was limp and powerless, if he didn’t lend Bronin a hand now, the latter might truly fall into the Dark Abyss, or worse, become a slave to the Dark Lineage.
A series of spells were chanted from Mihailovich’s lips, and at this time, he finally unleashed his weak Saint Yuan Power—the Wings of Light! Like a soaring bird, a faint halo symmetrically streaked across the sky and headed towards Bronin.
The Fighting Qi bursting from the Long Spear, like a mountain collapse or a tsunami, gushed from the spear shaft and met the wave-like Dark Blade head-on. The powerful outward Fighting Qi collided with the Dark Magic Attack that could penetrate everything; the fierce collision immediately caused a strange Spatial Rift to appear in front of Bronin. His Fighting Qi finally could no longer hold on at the last moment, scattering amid numerous screeches and giving rise to myriad streaks of light. The Church of Light’s Holy Light Spell, combined with the released Fighting Qi, ultimately failed to withstand the strong advance of the Dark Magic Force. As space rifts darkened the entire Sky, the Wings of Light also finally arrived; the pure and blemish-free Holy Light clashed with the Dark Magic Force, stirring up endless thunder and shrill screams that almost pierced people’s ears. Mihailovich’s strike, which nearly drained all his Saint Yuan Power, finally played a decisive role.
The emergence of the Holy Light Wings finally pulled Bronin back from the brink of the darkness, as the massive gravitational pull of the Spatial Rift was dragging him step by step into the void. With a larger Spatial Rift tearing open, the two rifts merged into one, but Bronin, with the powerful counterattack provided by the Holy Light Wings, tore free from the edge of the rift and, with a mighty leap, escaped the dangerous zone. Meanwhile, two Skeletons beside Uma were inexorably sucked into the Spatial Rift and tore into pieces by the immense pressure of the rift as they entered.
Uma hadn’t expected that the damned Light Mage hiding on the City Wall would be able to cast a Holy Light Wing to free Bronin. The Spatial Rift couldn’t be maintained for long; it would open and close quickly. Although he could tear rifts open with his Power, the physical exertion was too great. It was more appropriate to create Spatial Rifts using the combat forces of both sides. He had originally intended to send this Light Knight into the dark space for a good "education," but that plan was foiled by the Light Mage. Uma felt a tinge of regret, but his main mission was complete.
After leaping into the air and performing a series of backflips, Bronin no longer had any confidence and kept calling out to the Light Knights to form a solid defense ring and tactically retreat. He had already exhausted his strength but had not been able to gauge the real Power of his opponent, which made him feel a sense of despair. Now the issue was not whether they could defeat the opponent, but how to escape the Attacks of these dark Undead.
