Chapter 628: Volume 16: Mists and Illusions, Chapter 21: Another Ingenious Move

"Sir, Bruce Fortress is crucial to both Homer and us, and I think no one would overlook this, especially in the current situation. I’m afraid it would be too difficult to seize Bruce Fortress, with more than ten thousand regular troops stationed within. Our strength is far inferior; we have no chance at all," Fran shook his head, signaling that it was unlikely. Facing off against over ten thousand Homer regular troops, especially when they were firmly entrenched in the city, was unimaginable for an emerging self-defense army of three thousand.

"Hmm, Fran, rest assured, I have not lost my mind to the point of wanting to forcibly storm Bruce Fortress. A conventional battle is definitely not realistic, but I have been thinking of trying other methods," Komer’s mouth curled into a sinister smile.

Fran also knew that his lord was not merely a mage. The deeper one delved into contact with him, the more one thought they understood him, the more hidden and mysterious things would be revealed about him. The arrival of the mages Rebry, Mihailovich, and Newman; the appearances of the Dark Knights Solonberg and Vladimir Koff; and the sudden addition of some inexplicable Mercenary Corps—all made Fran wonder where these people came from and why they were here. How had the bizarre mage and knight popped up, along with a new group of mages shrouded in sinister darkness? The odd characters kept emerging around Komer, yet he seemed to manage them with ease, commanding them around effortlessly.

Listening to Komer’s idea, the mage Xerob, who only showed his eyes, frowned slightly. The Dark Lord seemed to revel in the life of a secular lord, and while the continual expansion of power and territory was beneficial for the Great Mysterium Sect’s future extension of influence to the north, the Dark Lord’s zeal seemed to exceed his interest in the Dark Lineage. Xerob even suspected that the Dark Lord had no interest in inheriting the Dark Lineage at all. He had summoned them purely to use the Sect’s power as a foundation for accumulating secular power for himself.

Ambition was a good thing; without it, the Dark Lineage would lack the motivation to develop. However, if one’s ambition excessively focused on secular power, that was a bit worrying. The life goal of the Great Mysterium Sect was to broaden the Dark Lineage. This Dark Lord had long shown his reluctance to take over the Dark Lineage, and although there were mages skilled in the arts of the Dark Lineage by his side, these mages did not seem to stem from the authentic Dark Holy Church lineage; they were more like those from dark homicide and Undead Magic lineages.

"Dark Lord, I understand your intention to use the forces of the Undead to launch an attack on the Homer Soldiers inside Bruce Fortress, forcing them to retreat from the fortress. However, the Undead is only a part of the Dark Holy Church magics. This time, there are only two Undead Mages that followed me. Handling such large-scale control of the Undead might be a bit too demanding," Xerob carefully responded. He was reluctant to participate in the slaughter of these common soldiers, who were powerless to resist, but he could not refuse Komer’s request and used objective conditions as an excuse instead.

"No matter, I have an Undead Grand Mage here who will take the lead. With the assistance of your mages, that should be enough. If necessary, I can also make a move," Komer smiled, "Mr. Xerob, please come in."

A sinister aura swept into the tent as it opened, dense and pure—so much so that Xerob, who was already a bit displeased, suddenly felt his hair stand on end from excitement. It had been a long time since he had felt such a pure dark aura. Komer’s deliberate concealment made it impossible for Xerob to sense any dark aura on him, but the aura brought by the person who had just entered was even purer than his own, causing Xerob both amazement and joy. Could it be that the emperor was resurrected?

The visitor’s vacant gaze and outdated clothing greatly disappointed Xerob. Although the Dark Lineage did not focus on appearances, wearing tattered thief attire was not their pursuit either. But how could such a person possess such a powerful aura, even making Xerob feel an inexplicable oppression?

Uma lightly stepped in, having to admit that the current conditions of this temporary body were quite good, especially in terms of physical constitution. However, it was a male body. Even though Uma had been in decay for several centuries, to experience manhood as her new life was somewhat intolerable for her. Yet, survival was the priority. Despite being a male, this body’s conditions were exceptionally good, allowing her to fully utilize her power. Every transfer of flesh consumed a significant portion of the original energy. Uma could wait for the next best opportunity.

Seeing the skeptical gaze from the person across, Uma had long known he was from a remnant of the Dark Lineage. Though the emperor had perished and the Dark Empire had fallen, the Dark Holy Church, as a once glorious Sect of faith, was not so easily eradicated. The power of belief and worship was infinite; to extinguish belief, it must lose its vitality completely. Otherwise, it lay dormant like a seed in the mud, ready to sprout robustly with the nourishment of rain and wind. Seeing him, Uma felt an indescribable warmth, even more so than seeing Komer. How wonderful it would be if this man were the emperor’s heir. Unfortunately, the world does not revolve around human will. Yet, the will of Kennifer III had to fall upon such an indecisive individual.

"Mr. Uma, this is Mr. Xerob from the Great Mysterium Sect. I believe you two will have much in common in the future. However, I am sorry, as we have other important matters to attend to now," Komer’s smile remained as warm as spring, but to the pair, it seemed the lord was always scheming.

"Pleased to meet you." "It’s a pleasure to meet you."

Although both felt the same temperament from each other, their reserve made them both instinctively maintain a relatively calm attitude, which pleased Komer. If the two had gotten too cozy too quickly, it wouldn’t bode well; at the very least, they would immediately turn their attention to him, and he would have to face their endless demands and entanglement. He truly did not have the energy to take on the burden of Dark Lineage as well.

"Mr. Uma, I have a notion that requires the support of you and Mr. Xerob," Reno went straight to the point. "As you have seen, Bruce Fortress is laid out before us, and those damned Homer People are just inside, biding their time. Moreover, if they were to really sally forth, my Self-defense Army might not be able to hold them at bay. I am looking for a permanent solution to ensure the safety of Leon and Caucasus. The only way is to take control of Bruce Fortress, so••••••"

Before Komer could finish, Uma’s sinister and dark voice rang out, "Lord, you needn’t tell me the reasons; just tell me what I need to do. That will suffice."

"Very well, my idea is to have Mr. Xerob’s two Undead Mages work with you to summon the Undead, Skeletons, and Zombies at Bruce Fortress, to have these creatures attack Bruce Fortress’s garrison and throw Bruce Fortress into chaos, forcing them to evacuate from the fortress," Komer said crisply and clearly.

"Summon the Undead?" Uma pondered for a moment, his face expressionless like a Thief, his yellowing eyes utterly devoid of life.

"Yes, I need Bruce Fortress to become a city of panic, plunging it into abject fear, compelling the Army there to withdraw. Their Mages have already suffered severe losses, and Homer no longer has many Mages to send. It is impossible for them to do so in a short time, so I believe we can fully drive them out of Bruce Fortress in this battle," Komer voiced with certainty.

"Lord, you should be aware that in order to create chaos in Bruce, relying solely on the personal power of the Undead Mages to summon the original undying is limited in number. If Bruce Fortress used to be an ancient battlefield or there is a graveyard, that would make things much easier. We would just need to activate the summoning magic to rouse those abandoned Skeletons and Zombies," Uma replied blandly.

"Wait a moment, let me think. Mr. Uma, there should be quite ample resources for you to summon under the City Wall of Bruce Fortress. I cannot be certain of within the city, but in my memory, Bruce Fortress experienced a suppressed rebellious mutiny over one hundred years ago. There might be some gains to be had. As for a graveyard, I remember east of the north city marketplace, near the edge of Greenland Forest, there seems to be a graveyard," Komer tried hard to recall, providing Uma with information as much as possible.

"If that’s the case, then there will be no problem," Uma nodded.

"Mr. Uma, Mr. Xerob’s two Mages will cooperate with you. You can discuss the specifics among yourselves. However, I must remind Mr. Uma that my intention is only to chase away the garrison within the city of Bruce Fortress. The Merchants and common people must be left behind. Therefore, the atmosphere of terror can only spread among the city guard and must not develop outside the city. That is to say, the chaos must not spread outside—the chaos must not spread to the outside. Uma and Xerob, please pay attention to this point," Komer cautioned, taking great care with this detail. Bruce Fortress must not only become a shield for his north, but equally, it should also serve as a link for his northern passage.

Uma and Xerob both frowned at the same time, finding the request particularly challenging. Once the Undead were unleashed, maintaining full control would not be so easy.

"Lord Komer, your requirement is really quite demanding, but I will do my best," Uma’s tone seemed almost joking, yet the icy voice bore not a hint of humor.
