Chapter 616: Volume 16: Mists and Illusions, Chapter 9: Schemes
"You’re thinking of choosing the Greenland Forest Plank Road as the ambush site?" Rebury mused aloud in response, and although he was not well-versed in military matters, it was clear to anyone what Homer’s military movements could mean for Leon and Caucasus. Over ten thousand regular infantry, a small group of mages, and a squadron of knights—by no means could this force from Caucasus-Leon, comprised mainly of Half-Beastmen, withstand them. It was within expectations to use their advantageous power in an ambush. The Forest Trail in Greenland Forest, notorious for its rugged and winding path, posed great risks even for regular merchants and caravans, thus earning its name. Yet for an army of more than ten thousand, it was the most suitable route; at least, for themselves, it undoubtedly held no risks. No one would think that someone would have designs on this path.
"Indeed, you are also aware that our current strength in Caucasus is no match for Homer, and should Homer’s army emerge unscathed on the lands of Leon, our defeat is certain. Therefore, we cannot sit idly by; it’s imperative to strike first, and the Greenland Forest Trail is the natural choice for an ambush," Komer nodded, his face showing no sign of emotional fluctuation, as if the eerie move of Homer’s army had no effect on him whatsoever.
"Lord, I must remind you that the enemy has over ten thousand soldiers and they too have mages and knights. The Greenland Forest Trail may be a good ambush site, but the ambushers must have considerable strength as well," Rebury furrowed his brows slightly. Ever since his arrival in Caucasus, he had been drawn into these wars among ordinary people, which was not a pleasant matter for a mage, but truth be told, Caucasus had treated him well, fulfilling all his requests, and Damarlinsk Castle had become a place he was reluctant to leave—at least for now, Rebury had no intention of departing.
"Of course. I’m not too sure about the strength of Philip’s Mage Corps, and I believe Mr. Rebury, having spent time in Galle, wouldn’t be too unfamiliar with Homer’s mages. However, I have some understanding of their Knights regiment. They are strong, but not invincible. As for their soldiers, hmph, they haven’t experienced real war in many years. The previous battle with Leon already proved this, and I doubt their combat prowess has dramatically improved in a few months," Komer laughed, "Besides, I don’t expect our ambushing forces to completely annihilate them. My idea is to demoralize them, severely strike their spirits, and eliminate their mages and knights. With just a bunch of ordinary-skilled infantry, I believe they stand little chance of winning."
"What do you plan to do?" Rebury had to admit the opponent’s plan was well-thought-out and vicious. Komer had already aimed at key figures like the mages, knights, and infantry officers. Effectively eliminating these crucial wartime individuals could turn the army into a snake with its spine broken, posing hardly any threat at all.
"It’s simple. Incite a migration attack by the Magical Beasts of Greenland Forest upon them, and in the chaos, take out their mages, knights, and officers," Komer’s lips curled into a cold smile, his plans aligned with what Rebury had guessed.
"Hmm, that’s roughly what I expected too. Inciting a migration of Magical Beasts is no easy feat, but it seems you’ve mentioned encountering migrating Gray Wolves in the Greenland Forest before. It looks like you’re eyeing this kind of move. I wonder if, aside from the Gray Wolves, there are other sufficient gregarious Magical Beasts within Greenland Forest?" Rebury smirked discreetly. Inciting Magical Beast migrations is a fortuitous occurrence, and the Lord talks of it flippantly—how could one go about inciting them in these thousands of miles of primeval forest?
"Mr. Rebury, it seems you’ve forgotten about our ever-energetic Miss Shatima. I believe she would be delighted to accept this mission. After mooching off us in Caucasus for so long, she’s caused quite a bit of trouble and never done a serious day’s work. Isn’t handing this task over to her both satisfying her adventurous spirit and amending our strength? I believe Miss Shatima will deliver a satisfactory outcome for us."
Komer smiled; he had considered this question long ago. Shatima’s true identity couldn’t be concealed from experts like Rebury and Mihailovich. Their frequent contact with her meant they were well-aware of the enigmatic individual’s background. How Komer managed to tame this Ice Dragon in human form intrigued both Rebury and Mihailovich. The dragon’s presence indeed made it easy to stir the group-living Magical Beasts hidden in the depths of Greenland Forest, but having them attack Homer’s passing army at an opportune moment was not that simple. However, seeing Komer’s certainty, Rebury didn’t say more, trusting that the other man had his plans well in place. Even if Shatima failed to complete the task, the attack on Homer’s Mage Corps and knights would still proceed, as the lord was not one to easily give up on his objectives.
"Hmm, Miss Shatima’s temperament does make her a suitable helper for this ambush. Still, I must remind you, Lord, not to underestimate Homer’s Mage Corps. Although small in scale, there are a few infamous yet skillful individuals that I know of. If we are unaware of this, we might suffer a great loss," Rebury nodded.
"That’s where we’ll need your introduction and arrangements, Mr. Rebury. The prepared against the unprepared—we already hold an absolute advantage on this point. They have their own strong players, and so do we—yourself, myself, Mr. Mihailovich, along with Solonberg and Vladimir Koff. As long as we assure a successful first strike, I have other friends who can lend a hand. Their strength should not be underestimated; if we eliminate their mages, the rest will be straightforward."
In Rebury’s somewhat shocked gaze, Komer’s eyes glinted faintly. Relying solely on Rebury and Mihailovich was unreliable; a smart hare has three openings to its den, and without backup plans, his lordship was far too perilous.
Rebury also harbored doubts; this lord seemed to be growing ever more enigmatic. He had friends who would help? Who were they? Could it be the mercenaries, or that somewhat eccentric and creepy man?
