Chapter 607: Volume 16: Hazy Dark Fog Chapter 2: Collapse

The sudden fall of Saint Nicholas Fortress swept over the northern plains of the Kingdom of Nicosia, which were already edging into the late autumn season, like a bone-chilling cold wind. Everyone felt an immediate terror, as if they had been frozen stiff, their very thoughts grinding to a halt. No one had anticipated that the breach would begin with Saint Nicholas Fortress. The burly, reckless Minotaur soldiers, howling with their horned helmets covering their faces, swept over the northern plains of the Kingdom of Nicosia like a flood. Compared to the Mogan Wilderness, which had already started to see light snow, the climate here was much more comfortable. Yet, when the Five Tribes Flag representing the Beamon Kingdom and the Tiger King Flag representing the leader of the Beastman Alliance appeared at Saint Nicholas Fortress, all the mortals on the northern plains felt as if the sky was about to collapse.

No matter how fiercely wild the beastmen were in the past, they would at most overrun some small castles and strongholds, pillaging the land before swiftly departing. Even last year at Meine, Susoer, and the Myron Duchy, the beastmen did not occupy the territory after their assaults and even set the capital of Mycenae ablaze to prevent it from becoming a thorn in their side—a obstacle to the beastmen’s southward push. But Mycenae was merely the capital of Myron Duchy, nothing compared to the kingdom’s major fortresses. Saint Nicholas Fortress, consisting of twelve interconnected castles, was a large complex stronghold that no one could conquer without paying a painful price, let alone the beastmen who had yet to master the use of siege instruments.

But this time, everyone was stunned by the abrupt change. The Half-Beastmen who seized control of Saint Nicholas Fortress did not loot and burn everything before departing, as they did last year. The appearance of Minotaur soldiers and Spotted Warriors at Saint Nicholas Fortress seemed to suggest that the beastmen might have changed something this time.

The fall of Saint Nicholas Fortress brought consequences that no one could imagine. The beastmen’s Wolf Cavalry surged in and clashed with the knights of the Fire Shadow Knights at Gratz Fortress, fifty leagues to the southeast, in the first battle. The Knights of the Fire Shadow Knights successfully routed the vanguard of the Wolf Cavalry, but then faced the locust-like Minotaur soldiers and Berserker Bear Warriors, strong enough to withstand ordinary martial power. With the support of the Golden Oak Legion, the Fire Shadow Knights dealt another heavy blow to the infantry formations of Minotaur soldiers and Berserker Bear Warriors. However, this battle was not as effortless as the first. Even though they were repeatedly routed, the Minotaur soldiers, stubbornly resilient, always managed to regroup quickly and counterattack, relying on the Berserker Bear Warriors’ tremendous impact and resistance. Gradually, the tide of war began to turn against the Kingdom of Nicosia.

When the Wolf Cavalry joined forces with the Beamon Kingdom’s most elite Tiger Clan Spotted Armor at the rear flank of Gratz Fortress, the Kingdom’s Golden Oak Corps could no longer hold their ground. This time, it seemed the Beamons intended to take a significant action. After evacuating from Gratz Fortress, the Golden Oak Corps was ambushed by Spotted Armor and Wolf Cavalry, and even the Minotaur soldiers and Berserker Bear Warriors tenaciously pursued them, marking the first major defeat since the Golden Oak Corps was established.

Facing a Beastman Alliance Army twice their size, the Golden Oak Corps, even with reinforcements from the Fire Shadow Knights and the Court Mage Corps, struggled. It seemed the beastmen had already mastered the mortals’ tactics: on one hand, the Wolf Cavalry’s mobility restrained the Fire Shadow Knights; on the other hand, the Fox Clan’s Falcon Feather Hand attacked the Court Mage Corps’ Magicians. Meanwhile, a special military unit—the Eagle Tribe Knights—were unleashed as a trump card, becoming a key factor that turned the tide of the war.

This was the first time the beastmen deployed their previously hidden special squad. Usually, the Eagle Tribe Knights, who rode Winged Gryphons, acted alone as scouts or sentinels for decades and rarely moved in groups. This time, however, a whole team of Winged Gryphons took to the sky, launching a surprise attack on the unsuspecting Mages of the Kingdom’s Mage Corps. The swooping Gryphons tore through the fragile bodies of several magicians in an instant. The Eagle Tribe Knights seized the opportunity to strike. Five mages and nine magicians fell in this well-prepared assault by the beastmen. Had it not been for the swift arrival of the Fire Shadow Knights’ reinforcements, the mages of the Court Mage Corps might have been almost entirely buried there.

Losing the protection of city walls, fortresses, and archers, the mages’ defenses were at their weakest. Sudden calamity from the sky descended upon the Court Mage Corps, and the magicians were utterly routed by the unexpected aerial onslaught. The Mage Corps, who were supporting the Golden Oak Legion’s magic attacks against the besieged Minotaur soldiers, immediately collapsed. The Minotaur soldiers, who had been barely holding on under the relentless barrage of magic, finally found their break. The entrance of the Tiger Tribe Warrior group, led by the Tiger Clan in Spotted Armor, dealt a fatal blow to the Golden Oak Legion.

The Golden Oak Legion finally collapsed after exhausting their last ounce of strength. The Fire Shadow Knights also suffered heavy losses under the attack of the Wolf Cavalry and Fox Clan Feather Archers. This battle by the banks of Lake Isek, said to decide the fate of the kingdom, ended with the destruction of the Kingdom’s Golden Oak Corps. The Kingdom’s Fire Shadow Knights and Court Mage Corps also sustained heavy losses during the subsequent pursuit by the beastmen’s Wolf Cavalry and Eagle Tribe Knights. The battle sent shockwaves across the kingdom and the entire northern Blue Continent. The Kingdom of Nicosia, proclaimed as the most powerful country on the northern Blue Continent, saw its most elite Golden Oak Legion annihilated by the beastmen. More importantly, the significant weakening of the Court Mage Corps directly impacted subsequent operations. Likewise, even though the Fire Shadow Knights had the upper hand in combat with the Wolf Cavalry, they were far outnumbered and suffered greatly from the treacherous Fox Clan Feather Archers hiding behind the cavalry.

The annihilation of the Golden Oak Legion, the devastating defeat of the Court Mage Corps and Fire Shadow Knights, threw the entire Jazair into extreme panic. Although the Blue Dove Corps had already hurriedly reinforced the northern front at the earliest opportunity, the Iron Cross Corps was beset by attacks from the west by the beastmen and couldn’t break free. The kingdom could no longer afford another scare. The Iron Cross Corps, already struggling to hold off the Beast Warrior’s assault, which had turned the Myron Duchy into a wilderness, almost split their hearts when they saw dozens of battering rams appear before the eyes of their officers.
