Chapter 579: Volume 14: Accumulate Thinly, Erupt Mightily, Chapter 23: Primary Golden Corpse
Startled, Komer’s gaze lingered on the seemingly oblivious young dragoness. Somehow, she had discerned the relationship between him and Lome. Komer could still catch the emotional implications in her words; how did she know about their intimate connection? Based on Komer’s observations, even Eve and Grace had only vaguely sensed a certain understanding between him and Lome. Only Finitz had been deliberately let in on the lascivious tease, and it was unlikely she would share that with anyone.
"Shatima, I didn’t realize you had a talent for espionage. What’s more, are you interested in my private life now?" With the intent to deflect the topic, Komer smirked at the dragon lady who, for some reason, seemed reluctant to pull up her trousers.
"No, I just happened to see the brilliance and splendor on Miss Lome’s face when she left your Quiet Cultivation Place. Hmm, there was a certain rich scent, just like when you stood behind me earlier." Shatima thought hard before responding, "I wonder, do you and Miss Lome also engage in that kind of exercise? I feel like I still can’t live like a true Human Clan, perhaps lacking experience in this regard. Maybe after going through that, I could truly integrate into your lives and become a real human female?"
Komer was at a loss for words. For this Dragon Lady who was not yet fully human, he indeed had nothing to say. Going through that would indeed make you a woman, but what a Dragon Lady would bring to a man was unpredictable.
Puber had finally returned, bringing with him mixed news. The kingdom also adopted a dual strategy of suppression towards Caucasus; it seemed achieving the position of Leon’s Lord was out of reach. The kingdom did not wish to nurture another Great Lord; they would rather award Leon to other loyal Nobles. However, the situation forced them to temporarily adopt delaying tactics, using Komer as a decoy to divert Philip’s attention. This strategy appeared effective, at least increasing Homer’s hostility towards Caucasus.
However, Komer didn’t have to worry about any significant moves from Homer until the Floating Bridge of Bruce Fortress was completed. But Komer needed to prepare early. Having temporary control of Leon, he was entitled to dispose of the region’s mining assets. The auction was soon underway, with Merchants from Jazair and Kingdom Inland, as well as from the middle and upper reaches of the Catania River region, not wanting to be outdone, joining forces to challenge the Merchant powers of the Kingdom of Nicosia. Even those from the colonial points across the Nether Sea on Mang Continent wanted a share of the action. This bustling scene delighted both Komer and Puber.
Since Boninski had been stripped of Noble and Lordship rights, most mines in Leon Region became ownerless and were, without exception, brought to auction. Of course, some mines belonging to Boninski had already sold mining rights and needed reconfirmation—with the Kingdom Star Chamber Court reconfirmation fee costing those Merchants and Small Aristocrats close to Homer dearly.
Komer, acting as steward of Leon Region, gained a considerable return, but with these rewards, he also had to shoulder the responsibilities of a Lord. Merchants unanimously expressed concern over the security of Leon Region, long considered the most dangerous place in the kingdom. Changing this situation called for adequate armed forces, a demand echoed by all attending the auction in Ugru.
Upon seeing Komer’s Half-Beastman Self-Defense Force and Ground Dragon Cavalry on the streets of Ugru, the Merchants were even more encouraged. If even Half-Beastmen and Ground Dragons could be subdued, there should be no issues with the region—giving the initially wary Merchants great confidence.
Komer was somewhat prepared for this. In fact, to guard against a future change of events and a potential threat from Homer to Caucasus and Leon, Komer had begun a new round of military expansion. The Leon Self-Defense Force and Caucasus Self-Defense Forces were both to be expanded to a thousand Members, along with a five hundred-strong Lord’s Guard. A force of two thousand five hundred Soldiers, Komer believed, would be more than enough to stabilize the security of both regions. Even if Homer People did aim to confront him, the two thousand five hundred Soldiers would stand ready to fight. Of course, that assumed all Soldiers would maintain the same Level of preparedness, a task that lay in the hands of the military Instructors. At least the structure of Caucasus’ armed forces was set; the next step was to improve their Combat capabilities.
With too many issues at hand, after successfully convincing Shatima not to cause trouble everywhere, Komer requested that she consciously enhance her inherent Ice Magic. Dragon Breath Magic consumed too much Dragon Magic Power, while Ice Magic from within was much easier. This made her an additional assistant in explorations. Characters like Eve, Grace, and Havier were not capable of entering the Second Floor; Komer didn’t want his companions to take such risks.
Everyone began preparing for the second exploration of Damarlinsk Castle. Shatima’s intuition was reliable; there were definitely troubles in the Underground Second Level. Without ample preparation, this expedition might not end as smoothly as the first, possibly incurring undue costs.
The training of the Corpse also entered a new phase, gradually moving towards the Golden Corpse Stage. This Thief, whose origin Komer still hadn’t figured out, was starting to resemble an experimental subject. The Zombie Thief’s response to his mental commands became increasingly sensitive, reacting almost instantly to his thoughts. By continually exercising the Zombie’s agility and enhancing its automatic defensive capabilities with Magic, the Zombie Thief’s offensive and defensive abilities had greatly improved.
This Zombie could be considered to meet the standards of a Golden Corpse in all respects. Although Refining zombies was a considerably secret art, it wasn’t without traces. Komer had successfully extracted much useful information from Kennifer III’s memories, and his exchanges with Mihailovich had also been very beneficial. Yet, it was still only an initial-level Golden Corpse, far from Komer’s expectations. There was still a long way to go in future research.
