Chapter 535: Volume 13: Sea Rain and Heavenly Wind Chapter 5: Dragon Breath Magic
"Oh, then why is the Ice Dragon so afraid of those archers’ arrows?" Komer was somewhat puzzled, as his knowledge in this area was far from matching Mr. Rebry’s.
"Well, I suspect those archers might have soaked their arrows in Dragon Saliva Fragrance, which can render a dragon unconscious. Did you smell it? There seems to be a faint scent in the air; that’s the odor of Dragon Saliva Fragrance. Moreover, it’s very possible that the Great Swamp Area is the habitat of the Turtle Dragons, and it wouldn’t be difficult for the Jellyfish People to obtain reed grass nurtured by Turtle Dragon saliva. This Dragon Saliva Fragrance is lethal to the Dragon Clan. As soon as it contacts their blood, they will fall unconscious for a period of time. No dragon is immune to it. I think this is the main reason why the Ice Dragon fears the arrows."
Mages have a keen sense of smell that is far more sensitive than that of ordinary people. Although Komer also detected the fragrant scent wafting through the air, he didn’t know it was Dragon Saliva Fragrance. However, Mr. Rebry seemed quite knowledgeable on the subject, and Komer even suspected that he might have once used such a substance when dealing with dragons.
"Oh, that being said, dragons have quite a few weaknesses, huh?" Komer sighed with a touch of realization.
"Hehe, if the Lord believes that, then it’s a huge mistake," Mr. Rebry spoke with experience, "This Ice Dragon is easily hit by arrows because it has not fully grown yet. For a mature dragon, these kind of arrows would be completely useless; robust Dragon Skin and Dragon Scales cannot be pierced by common weapons, unless you have special sharp ones. Furthermore, once a dragon is affected by Dragon Saliva Fragrance, it becomes more agitated and its attack power increases significantly in a short period of time. Whether the enemy can withstand it is something they need to consider carefully. Otherwise, the dragon could easily massacre them and then hide in a secret and safe place to sleep through this period of unconsciousness, leaving the enemy to pay a heavy price."
Mr. Rebry’s words reflected his passionate feelings and extensive research on the art of dragon slaying, "If dragons were so easily subdued, then there wouldn’t be such wise creatures like them in this world that were in no way inferior to humans. If it weren’t for their extremely low fertility rate, whether it be humans or Magical Beasts, we might all be ruled by them."
Komer cast a puzzled look at the Mage, who seemed lost in certain memories. The Mage appeared to have had a profound experience with this subject, but respecting his privacy, Komer wouldn’t casually inquire about matters his companion might not wish to discuss.
"Mr. Rebry, even among the Jellyfish People there are extremely skilled masters. Those two sword qis are not something an ordinary person could achieve. The Ice Dragon also suffered a great loss; it’s possible they have even more formidable tricks up their sleeve."
"Humph, more tricks? If they really had more, I doubt so many Jellyfish People warriors would be floating dead on the lake surface. Don’t be fooled; these Jellyfish People warriors may appear fragile in front of the Ice Dragon, but in ordinary combat, I’d wager each of them is a master archer on water. At such a time, why the need for secrecy? If they had killer moves, they should have used them already; otherwise, they’re truly left with no choice but to await their deaths," Mr. Rebry spoke disdainfully, "However, Sir, this seems like an opportunity for you. If we take action, things might turn out differently. Otherwise, hehe, the outcome is already sealed."
As Mr. Rebry spoke, the situation became increasingly dire.
The Ice Dragon soaring and flying through the sky was no longer content with this skirmish. Innately powerful, the Dragon Breath Magic had already been initiated; dragons are natural reservoirs of magic power, and their mighty Dragon Power can easily be transformed into a special kind of Dragon Magic Power. Depending on their particular attributes, Dragon Magic Power can activate powerful types of magic corresponding to the dragon’s elemental nature, and the Ice Dragon happens to be the king of Ice Magic.
Even though it was not fully mature and found it somewhat challenging to use this Dragon Magic Power, the furious Ice Dragon no longer cared about the difficulty. A faint ice mist swirled around its body, gradually forming a light blue, almost tangible ice shell, which made it even harder for the Jellyfish People archers on the water to shoot through. Arrows that hit the ice shell could no longer penetrate it, and even if a few particularly strong arrows did pierce through, it had little effect. The dragon’s thick skin could easily withstand these arrows, as long as they did not hit any weak or vital spots; it was as if being scratched.
Each time the Ice Dragon launched an attack with the "Icy Tempest," a collective spell normally cast by multiple Mages, it forced the Jellyfish People archers hiding in the Reed Marsh to either freeze to death or dive into the water to evade. With powerful strokes of its huge wings, the Ice Dragon made the "Icy Tempest" attack even more formidable. The entire Reed Marsh turned into a white expanse, as if the warm Great Swamp had suddenly become the frigid outskirts of the northland.
The two sword qis were utterly unable to stop the Ice Dragon’s onslaught. With ferocious swipes of its hefty tail, each sweep caused giant explosions in the immediate water surface, as the round-eyed dragon keenly observed the hiding place of the ones controlling the sword qis. But with the dense and expansive reeds in the Reed Marsh, it was quite difficult for even a dragon with sharp vision to discern the targets it wished to attack amidst the swaying reeds.
An energy-consuming brute force strike with its dragon breath finally granted the Ice Dragon the chance to spot its opponents. Its intelligence was in no way inferior to humans’; it knew to use certain sacrifices to gain even greater outcomes. For instance, this depletion of dragon breath yielded the discovery of the enemies’ hiding spots. The dragon swiftly ascended, then dived down at great speed, clearly having spotted the wielder of the sword qis. This fierce and angry strike indicated that the Ice Dragon was determined not to relent until its fight was won.
Komer and Mr. Rebry almost simultaneously detected the imminent crisis. The owner of the blue sword qi had been discovered, and now the master of the white sword qi could no longer hide his figure. The vast sword qi stirred up a frosty gale, colliding hard with the Ice Dragon like a frosty river freezing over.
Both masters of sword qi revealing themselves was indeed to the liking of the Ice Dragon. Being able to eliminate two main enemies at once saved it the trouble of hunting each one down individually. At this moment, it did not believe that its opponents had any more tricks up their sleeves. With its strength, no matter what schemes they employed, it would be futile.
The two streams of sword qi finally merged together, blue and white intertwining, and the pillar of light and qi swelled in size dramatically. They shook violently as they met the roaring body of the dragon. The dragon’s feet, huge as anchors, slammed into the pillar of blue and white sword qi with a thunderous roar. The unified sword qi was once more split apart by the impact. The blue sword qi became extremely dim, and the white sword qi turned a shade of grayish-white. The original lustrous white glow had disappeared without a trace, clearly indicating severe damage.
The Ice Dragon, too, did not emerge unscathed from this earth-shattering clash. The massive dragon body was sent reeling several meters into the air by the powerful sword qi. It had the advantage with its volley strike, and though its powerful dragon force could dissipate the sword qi’s ferocious power that tried to penetrate its body, the combined force of the two mighty beings exceeded the Ice Dragon’s expectations.
The impact nearly tore open the wound that the dragon blood magic had only just sealed. The wound beneath its ribs burst open once more, spewing out a curtain of blood and causing it such pain that tears formed in its eyes and it grimaced fiercely. Its tail whipped up fiercely, using the rebound force to slash downward. The tail struck the surface of the water, raising a wall of waves over ten meters high, while two frail figures swayed in the surging waters, dodging the assault of power like a violent storm.
"Lord, if you don’t act now, it really might be too late. If this Ice Dragon launches its ultimate magic, I fear that not even the Jellyfish People in this Reed Marsh could survive, let alone those two masters. Have you thought this through?"
Mr. Rebry held the Magic Wand in his hand with a smiling face, as the dark glow of magic power had already circulated up and down the wand several times. He had obviously brought the flow of magic power to its limit and was ready to invoke magic at the earliest word from Komer.
Solonberg was equally expectant. Although the recent dragon roar had injured him, he had managed to mitigate most of the force with his Fighting Qi, and such light wounds meant little to a battle-hardened knight like himself. Taking part in such an honorable and magnificent battle with a Dragon was undoubtedly the most glorious experience of his life thus far.
Crouching like a cheetah, head down, back arched, the knight held up his spear slightly raised, with a flickering qi more than a foot long spouting erratically from the edge of the blade. The entire Knight Spear seemed to be humming, indicating that the Dark Knight had catalyzed all his strength to its peak.
"No rush, Mr. Rebry. Although I don’t know how powerful this Ice Dragon is, my instinct tells me that these Jellyfish People might have some more tricks up their sleeve. Now is not the best time for us to interfere. Their power has surprised us, the fact that they hide two top masters is not good news for Our Caucasus. If these two masters can be inflicted with heavier injuries, I would be very pleased to see that, but of course, this should not affect the final outcome."
Komer observed the current situation closely before finally lifting his gaze to say,
"Oh? Do you think the Jellyfish People still have the capability to counterattack, Sir?" Rebry asked in surprise, not expecting Komer to come to such a conclusion. In his view, the Jellyfish People were already at the end of their tether, and the Ice Dragon could end the battle at any time. He could not see any killer moves left for the Jellyfish People.
"Hehe, just as you said earlier, since the Jellyfish People have obtained the Dragon Saliva Fragrance from the Turtle Dragon, they must have thoroughly and diligently studied the dragon’s habits and power. They came prepared this time, and I do not believe their preparations are so superficial. Let’s be ready to act, to see if the Jellyfish People have any more moves. If there is danger, it won’t be too late for us to make our move," Komer shifted his gaze back to the Battlefield.
