Chapter 522: Volume 12: Fierce Demonic Flames, Chapter 13: The Elf among Elves
"I’m sorry, I don’t have the right to claim this Yingluo from you. At first, it was just a hobby, uh..." Princess Finitz seemed at a loss for words as she tried to explain this special hobby of hers, a pursuit she had been fond of for as long as she could remember.
She didn’t understand why she always felt a sense of indescribable joy after each successful endeavor. Within her own clan, no one minded her behavior, and quite a few of the male elves even took pride in being visited by her; if Princess Finitz took interest in something, it was considered an honor.
However, Finitz had realized that once she stepped outside of her clan’s territory and into Mortal Society, her actions resembled a despised profession—thief, burglar, pickpocket. Everyone who spoke of such conduct did so with clenched teeth, except for the practitioners of the profession itself.
Princess Finitz wanted to stop being despised in Mortal Society, but she found that almost everything there required something called Gold Shield to exchange for food and all other services. It seemed her talents were the only way she could earn Gold Shields—even if it meant attracting curses from behind her back. Yet, she felt it was a better option than being thrown out of inns and taverns.
"No need to explain, what’s done is done. By the way, I have a few friends who also seem to have some items with you, some things that look like documents, from a few days ago in this city. You should remember," Komer said.
Seeing the innocent look in her clear, water-like eyes, Komer could only choose to believe her. If she thought her performance was worthwhile, then Komer had to admit she was the most skillful actress he had ever seen, even better than Tracy.
Finitz almost bit her lip in distress, tears brimming in her eyes. She had never expected her actions had been noticed twice by the same person, an undeniable blow to her image. She knew that Mortal Society found such behavior hard to forgive.
"I’m sorry, I have everything with me, yes, in the inn where I’m staying. I don’t know which items belong to your friends, can you come with me to identify them?" The Elf Girl lowered her head to her chest, rubbing her hands together unconsciously over her abdomen, like a child admitting a mistake to her parents.
Komer had no idea how to punish the Elf Girl before him, so he shook his head with a wry smile and after a long pause said, "Alright, I suppose we better go to the place where you’re staying. I’m really worried about how long it would take to find you if you were to leave."
"Sir, it won’t happen again, I won’t do it anymore." Finitz clasped her hands firmly together and raised her head to say timidly, "I won’t do it ever again."
"Oh? Is that so? You ran away from your clan, right? Why don’t you go back? What are you living on now?" Komer glanced at her sideways, asking with a half-smile, half-mockingly.
"Uh, I can go to a tavern to become a waitress. I heard that the taverns in Prague City offer good treatment and are recruiting girls, especially welcoming us Elf Women," she said excitedly, looking up at Komer, clearly hoping he would believe her.
"A tavern waitress?" Komer frowned. Of course, taverns welcomed Elf Women; those girls as pure as blank sheets of paper would become prey to the filthy, lecherous tavern customers in no time. Tavern owners had a hundred ways to deceive them without their noticing.
An Elf Princess? Maybe you’re a high and mighty princess among the elven kind, but here, you would only become a sex slave that men desperately desire to ravage.
"Sir, is there something wrong?" Seeing Komer’s frown, Finitz felt anxious again.
Ever since she’d snuck away from her clan, she’d been wandering through Mortal territory. Apart from a few blunders early on due to her lack of worldliness, she’d learned to protect herself, to avoid people as much as possible, to maintain her mystique beneath a woollen hat, unnoticed by many; her limited contact with the world hadn’t made her aware of the dirty dealings hidden behind the seemingly respectable fronts.
"Do you think this life of running away and wandering feels good? Is it better than your life back in the Elf Clan?" Komer sighed softly, realizing that he might have to take on another burden.
Although he was neither a saint nor a paragon of virtue, but to watch such a pure and innocent Elf Girl fall into a pit of fire was something he could hardly bear. Perhaps within the darker corners of his heart, there lay a more secretive thought unknown to others, that rather than those rough and uncultured brutes spoil her, it would be better if he himself benefitted instead, he would, after all, be far more tender and respectful than those men in the tavern.
"Hmm, I prefer this kind of life. It’s a bit dangerous, but it’s thrilling and fresh, so much better than the suffocating dullness of our clan. It’s a pity that my mother doesn’t allow me to come out freely, otherwise I wouldn’t have had to sneak out like this. If only I could travel freely with a few companions, how wonderful that would be."
Princess Finitz’s eyes shone with a dreamlike confusion, as if still immersed in some fantasy, which reminded Komer of his own younger days when he was similarly obsessed with self-indulgent follies. But the harsh reality often shatters all beautiful dreams and leaves one with searing pain that lingers in the memory forever.
Perhaps because he had been through similar experiences, Komer did not want such a girl to suffer through the heartbreak of shattered dreams without reason. It seemed more in keeping with a kind-hearted noble to let her savor the sweetness of youth—this was what Komer thought.
When Komer appeared in the Sofala Inn with the somewhat shy Elf Thief trailing behind, Havier was boasting profusely about the elegance of his Wind System flight technique and its incredible speed, seemingly forgetting the update his companions were eager to hear.
Bayezid tried a few times to interject but was silenced by Havier, who joked about his snail’s pace and denied him the chance to speak, until finally, Grace, out of impatience, simply asked about Komer pursuing the Elf Thief, which reminded Havier that he too had been left behind and had lost track of them.
Besides attracting Eve’s complaint and Grace’s scolding, Bayezid was also furiously mocking Havier, which resulted in a chaotic scene that just happened to coincide with Komer making his entrance into the room with Princess Finitz.
Seeing the Elf Thief so obediently following Komer into the room, both Havier and Bayezid’s mouths fell open wide like hippopotamuses’, their fingers pointing at each other, speechless. Looking at Komer’s face, a mingling of calm and fatigue, they came to understand and, aside from smacking their lips in envy, shook their heads in a remarkably synchronized display of astonishment.
Eve’s expression remained serene and tranquil, her eyes like spring water that shifted from the Elf Girl’s face back to Komer’s. His tired look worried her; she sensed that Komer might have been through a grueling fight, but under the circumstances, she didn’t feel it was appropriate to ask first.
Grace’s gaze, however, was fiery, tinted with a hint of hostility. This Elf Woman, unlike herself with mixed Elf Bloodline, seemed to naturally clash with her, and the more compliant the other appeared, the more it irritated Grace. She did not want such a sensible girl within their group—more precisely, she did not like this woman staying by Komer’s side.
Lome, however, focused all her attention on Komer.
The tumult of energy coursing through Komer had yet to fully subside. The use of the Sky Demon Cover had drained a significant amount of his Dark Magic Power, causing a Gap in his spirit to wrench open. Although suppressed by two Sacred Artifacts, even improving his Spiritual Power, a cracked soul was not something to heal in a day or two. Like a crack in a wall, it needed time and gradual nourishment to mend, only then could the rift slowly and quietly be healed.
Facing the room’s awkward stillness, Komer took a half step back, signalling the Elf Girl behind him to introduce herself. Under the watchful eyes of the others, her heart pounded with anxiety. But as Komer had advised her on the road, to blend into this group quickly, she needed to be sweet-tongued and sincere, only that way could she stay safely within this small company, enjoying her joyous journey of freedom.
"Elder brothers, sisters, Princess Finitz apologizes first here. Finitz is new to journeying away from home, and there are many things I don’t understand. I ask for your forgiveness and hope you would be generous in overlooking this one occasion." After struggling through a clearly rehearsed apology, Princess Finitz then took out a short wooden dagger from the pouch slung at her waist, "Sir Burianos, this is the famous Ironwood Knife from our Forest, made of ironwood, exceptionally strong. I hope you will like it."
Burianos laughed almost until his face couldn’t close, his hands and feet visibly clumsy, but faced with Grace’s fierce look, he could only stutter, scratching his head while glancing sideways at Eve and Grace.
Though Burianos was adept with heavy weapons, as a Warrior fond of Combat, there were times when close-quarters scuffles were inevitable. A short, agile knife like this was undeniably the best tool for hand-to-hand battle. But unless he had the approval of the two ladies beside him, he would rather forego the knife, because if he offended them, his days to come would likely be much harder.
