Chapter 380: Volume 7: The Awakening Spring Thunder, Chapter 9: Heaven Rewards the Diligent_2
Seeing her father seemingly oblivious to her words, staring out the window in a trance, the girl felt a twinge of irritation. However, she knew that at this time, her father’s mood was indeed foul, and it would be unwise to further upset him by being inconsiderate. She could only stand silently by, waiting for her father to emerge from his deep thoughts.
"Tracy, when exactly do you plan to proceed with your marriage to Prince Hoffman?"
Even the girl herself didn’t expect her father to suddenly bring up a topic seemingly unrelated to what she had just said. She felt a wave of panic, as if struck by a deer. Could it be that her father had noticed something amiss?
Trying her best to calm her emotions, she elegantly brushed a strand of hair from her face with her hand. Tracy’s cherry-red lips curled into a slight smile, revealing a beautiful curve, "Father, am I really that old? Why are you so eager for me to marry? Hoffman isn’t that old either. Right now, with the kingdom facing the threat of the Northern Beastmen, neither the king nor Her Majesty the Queen have much concern for such matters. I believe we need to wait until the kingdom’s situation has stabilized before we can discuss this, right?"
"Hmph, Tracy, keep a closer eye on Hoffman. We have invested a lot in him and placed high stakes. It would be a joke for the kingdom if it all turned out to be an egg-smash failure! Since the kingdom was established, no girl from any family has been jilted; I don’t want such an event happening in our family!" A cold gaze swept across the girl’s cheek, turning her rosy complexion momentarily pale.
With a bitter taste in her mouth, Tracy was at a loss for words in response to her father’s question. It seemed her father had caught wind of something. Perhaps he didn’t know the full situation; if he were to find out how strained the relationship had become with Hoffman, who knew what he would think?
"Rest assured, father. In a little while, Hoffman will come to Cyprus, and I will remind him," Tracy said with a tremble in her heart, but her complexion returned to normal after a single change. How important she was to Hoffman, perhaps only God knew, but at that moment, she dared not make it known. The matter had to be taken one step at a time.
Philip’s doubtful gaze swept over his daughter’s face but could not detect any irregularity. He huffed heavily, no longer speaking. Tracy was an important pawn for him to curry favor with the Royal Family. With Hoffman being one of the top contenders for the throne, not only did he have strong competition for the crown, but his maternal family also held significant influence. Marriage with him could make ascending the throne possible. However, Hoffman was no pushover. Although Tracy was beautiful and charming, merely relying on that might be good for a fling but not enough to secure a marriage. It took Philip considerable effort to arrange the engagement, and if it were to be broken off, he would lose not only his daughter but face a blow to his reputation, which would be an unforgivable stain on the Philip Family’s honor.
Another uncomfortable silence filled the room. Philip continued to ponder this series of troubles, while Tracy considered how to steer the conversation back to Komer. Eager as she was, it was not easy to pick up the conversation right away. Her father’s suspicion seemed to have not subsided, and she needed to wait for the right moment.
"Tracy, when you have the time, you must visit the Caucasus for me and check out the situation there. The news coming from that place has become too unreliable for my liking. How has this Komer managed to stir up such a sensation in the once desolate Caucasus in just half a year? Was he playing dumb or just biding his time all along? I’m starting to wonder if I really misjudged him before, leading to the current outcome," sighed Duke Philip with a hint of regret.
The girl’s body trembled as she looked up in surprise, "Father, what are you planning? Isn’t it too late to consider turning back now?"
With a solemn face, Philip didn’t move an inch, "Turn back? Sometimes, even if you want to, it’s impossible. From the moment he was banished from Cyprus, perhaps there was no turning back for him. But he’s not in a position to dominate the overall situation yet. I just want to take a closer look to see exactly what abilities allow this man to bring life to the dead chessboard of the Caucasus. Also, has he truly had free rein in Damarlinsk Castle? Could the prophecies of that place that have stood for hundreds of years truly be ineffective against him?"
Representatives from the Great Mysterium Sect had once again placed Komer in a difficult position. Through Rebry, Komer had come to understand the Sect’s origins—offshoots of the Dark Holy Church. It surprised him that such teachings could gain such traction in the south. Apparently, the Church of Light would soon extend its reach there too, a tricky predicament for Komer.
Through the window, Komer’s gaze swept across the lush greenery. Early summer in the Caucasus had quietly arrived. Half a year passed in a flash, and Komer realized he’d been there longer than he thought. The trials and tribulations of this half a year had taken him from a seemingly uninformed wastrel to the position he held today. At times, even Komer found it unbelievable, but he had indeed made it through.
