Chapter 371: Volume 7: Spring Thunder Awakens the Hibernating Creatures, Chapter 5: Demons’ Dance of Chaos_2
While the two knights from the Church of Light pondered Komer’s behavior, Komer himself was indeed busily occupied. The summoning letter from Rebry was very effective; at least three mages and two Dark Knights had entered Caucasus within a mere month. Although these cultivators had concealed themselves quite well, with Komer’s exceptionally keen perception, he effortlessly sensed the dark essence hidden deep within these individuals. Despite their various camouflage spells, under the faint guiding light of Komer’s intuition, their true nature was as clear as day. However, this suited Komer’s purposes even better. Had there been a couple of mages or priests from the Church of Light instead, it would have really put him in a difficult position.
Nevertheless, the guest skilled in mechanisms that Rebry had been waiting for had not yet arrived. Under Komer’s strict orders to not damage any of the castle’s facilities, Rebry could only join his friends and mingle within the castle, hoping to encounter the ghost that had once appeared. But this seemingly sentient spirit seemed to have noticed that the guests coming from all directions were not to be trifled with; no matter what methods Rebry tried during the day or night, the ghost always remained elusive, leading to Rebry’s great disappointment. Although unable to crack the complex mechanisms within the castle, Rebry still found something worth delving into—the ancient magic array at the center of Archangel Square became the object of the magic practitioners’ relentless exploration.
Indeed, some of Rebry’s friends were genuinely talented. At least, the magical glyphs and spells that appeared to be mere ancient text to Rebry’s eyes were quickly recognized by his friends as belonging to a script of Pompeii that had been lost to the secular historical river.
Legend had it that Pompeii was once a city-state where magic thrived a thousand years ago. Although just a city-state, the central city of Pompeii was not only incredibly prosperous but also famous across the Continent for having a magic academy. Regrettably, no one could have anticipated the devastating volcanic eruption and severe earthquakes that buried this once-flourishing city beneath the vast Volt Plains. The upheaval that followed left the Volt Mountain Range in place of the Volt Plains, and the Volt Mountains themselves were once an adventurer’s paradise. However, as time passed, no one could find the remains of Pompeii within the mountains. A group of dwarfs did establish their own city within the Volt Mountain Range, but another earthquake eventually destroyed their meticulously constructed city. From then on, the Volt Mountains became synonymous with desolation and remoteness.
Although the city of Pompeii had disappeared from the Continent, as a once-significant part of magical history, the Pompeii script had not been completely lost. In fact, many ancient magic traditions still used this obscure script. Of course, with the passage of time, the frequency of its use only decreased, and it was eventually destined to fade into oblivion—a language without living speakers is bound to be lost to the annals of history.
The breakthrough on the old Star Magic Array was a treasure trove for Rebry and his mage friends. Their fervor for magic led them to devote all their energy to figuring out how to operate and solve the mystery of this grand magic transmission array. Breaking the secrets of such an ancient magic transmission array was not a task that could be accomplished overnight, but this only fueled the passion of these somewhat fanatical zealots even more, turning Archangel Square into their sole fixation, night and day.
Komer had hoped that among Rebry’s friends, if any were inclined to teach, they could select some promising candidates from the immigrants to train as magic apprentices or magicians for his own use. However, seeing this group of madmen exhaust themselves in the study of the ancient magic array, Komer willingly gave up this notion. Instead, Rebry’s other two Dark Knights became the new favorites in Komer’s eyes.
After swiftly and decisively knocking down several of the stronger Half-beastman warriors who were eager to try, Solonberg and another expressionless Dark Knight named Vladimir Koff immediately became honored guests of Komer, training a batch of highly skilled Half-beastman fighters became Komer’s main goal for employing the two Dark Knights. In exchange, of course, Komer would unconditionally offer the two Dark Knights guidance on how to improve their mastery of Dark Fighting Qi.
Originally, the two Dark Knights didn’t believe that a magician like Komer could understand the secrets of Fighting Qi, which are considered arcane to warriors. However, after Komer lightly hinted at one or two key issues, the attitudes of the two Dark Knights changed dramatically. Although Komer, who possessed the memories of the peerless warrior Kennifer III, couldn’t utilize these in actual combat, his skills, insight, and experience far exceeded those of the Dark Knights, who had just stepped into the realm of Martial Arts. His well-timed guidance often allowed them to bypass many detours and directly enter a new realm, just as a traveler stumbling on a narrow mountain path suddenly learns of a more convenient route leading straight to his destination. The satisfaction and joy from this experience were beyond what ordinary people could understand. Naturally, to frequently receive such guidance, helping Komer vigorously train the Half-beastman fighters became the most important and primary task for the two Dark Knights.
The conquest of Damarlinsk Castle indeed raised Komer’s prestige to a new height, especially after witnessing that the friends of the Lord, who chose to live inside the castle, were all unharmed, the look of awe mixed with admiration became even more apparent. The integration of new Immigrants and Indigenous People went very smoothly, particularly after a compromise was reached with the Pirates of the Nether Sea, the Caucasus entered a stable period of development. Komer became even more adept at handling day-to-day governance.
The Pirates, though brutal, seemed more trustworthy in their word than many hypocritical Nobles—at least that’s what Komer believed. Even though he didn’t give the Pirates a specific time frame, they still followed the terms of the agreement, constantly changing the locations of delivery and importing food from all over the north and south. This made Komer very pleased but also increased the pressure on his shoulders. If he failed to satisfy the Pirates when the time came, they would immediately turn from partners into formidable enemies, but Komer did not plan on letting it get to that point.
With the food supply secured, Komer felt much more at ease—at least he didn’t have to worry about the northern blockade. With the number of troops at Bruce Fortress increasing and the inspection of goods entering and leaving the Caucasus becoming stricter—especially with the suggestion that not even half a grain of food should enter the Caucasus, and that food entering the Leon Region had to undergo meticulous verification before being allowed—these were clearly measures targeting him. Now that the only exit from the Caucasus was this route in the north, and although the Eastern Pirates had formed an alliance through trade with him, before his Magic Cannons and Mirror of Thousand Miles were constructed, these Pirates would never tolerate him building a port city right under their noses.
With these thoughts, Komer’s enthusiasm slowly waned. More than a hundred thousand people, a vast expanse of land—if he only fixed his gaze on this northern passage, he would always be at the mercy of others, unless he had the strength to break through the blockade himself, otherwise he would have to find another way out.
