Chapter 315: Volume 5: Lord’s Path Chapter 5: Princess Vero

The doors of the reception hall burst open suddenly, and a voice of a girl, angry, panicked, and tinged with sobbing, rushed in from outside, "Father, how could you do this? Father, they are your citizens, they only did some irrational things because they believed in rumors, can’t you explain and persuade them? How could you let the guard disperse them? Look what your guard has done? The square is stained red with blood, and this is a disgrace to our Galle region of a hundred years!"

The silver-haired girl who had clearly inherited her father’s lineage, had a small perky nose, dark and shiny eyes like a pair of water-soaked honey grapes, glistening and faint. Her skin as white and translucent as milk-soaked gelatin, and her rosy lips highlighted her delicate face just right, making her look utterly distressed and pitiable. Her snow-white silk dress trailed on the floor, and beneath the ribbon around her fine ivory neck dangled a small silver statue of the goddess of harvest, Demeter. Her slender waist was accentuated by the dress, small enough to be embraced.

Without any regard for the other guests in the living room, the girl ran up to her father, grabbed his hands, and shook them vigorously, leaving the stern-looking silver-haired old man both annoyed and helpless.

Something in Komer’s heart felt like it had been heavily struck, making it difficult for him to breathe. The moment the girl rushed in, the panic and sorrow flashing in her purple eyes seemed to cause a loud roar in Komer’s long-silent and even numb heart. A certain memory leaped out of his memory, leaving Komer momentarily stunned.

"Vero, how can you be so impolite, can’t you see I have guests?" The silver-haired old man was clearly very fond of his daughter. Although his words were harsh, the tone overflowed with affection and pity.

"Father, please order the guard to stop the dispersal right away. If it continues like this, people will die," the girl pleaded tearfully, completely ignoring her father’s warning.

"Vero, these ignorant lowlifes need violence and blood to wake them up, to make them understand that everything must follow the law. Don’t worry, nothing serious will happen. These cowardly wretches will scatter as soon as they see the guard coming," said the silver-haired old man. He had already realized that his dealings with the refugees from Meine and Susoer had fallen through, and from the expressions of the representatives, it was clear that they would no longer believe in his persuasion. The individual who pretended to be indifferent on the side must also be plotting how to report him to the Kingdom’s Ministry of the Interior. Although he was not afraid, if the Internal Affairs Department investigated, it would be troublesome.

Before he had finished speaking, the sound of firm and forceful footsteps came from outside, "Duke, the mob has been dispersed, and everything has returned to normal." A young military officer with a tall figure and handsome face stepped in briskly. After giving a standard knightly salute, his gaze involuntarily rested on the young woman standing by the silver-haired old man.

The young knight who entered immediately attracted everyone’s attention. While the others were drawn by the young knight’s vibrant and impressive demeanor, Komer was shocked by the inherent commanding presence the man exuded. This fellow had to have middle-level Sacred Fighting Qi or above. If Komer wasn’t mistaken, this was someone who could only be trained in the Temple headquarters of the Church of Light, a mold of a Holy Swordsman or Paladin. Although the knight before him could not yet be called a Holy Swordsman or Paladin, given time, with Komer’s analytical eye, this knight with good talents would be a formidable contender.

It seemed that Duke Zellin was not as discordant with the Church of Light as the rumors suggested. Besides the Church of Light’s own several knight regiments, probably only the kingdom’s Fire Shadow Knights would have a master of such caliber. Yet, Komer was seeing one today in the old Duke Zellin’s residence, which was alarming. Although the knight did his best to hide his true nature, ever since the Nightmare, Komer realized that his spiritual sense and detection abilities had grown rapidly. Coupled with his daily meditation and contemplation, even though his magic skills had not reached a satisfactory level, his intuitive precognition had far surpassed the normal. Particularly with individuals like this who possessed holy or light-series magic powers that were opposite to the Dark Magic Force within him, they drew Komer’s attention even more.

Not only did this person before him possess a decent level of magic power, but more impressively, the fighting spirit he emanated allowed Komer to gauge his depth. Perhaps it was not anticipated that there would be an expert in the room, or the sight of the silver-haired girl ignited the knight’s fighting spirit. At any rate, the moment the young knight’s gaze fell on the silver-haired girl, Komer clearly discerned the true level of this individual.

"Sate, you executioner, I saw with my own eyes that you injured a woman, and I never want to see you again, you butcher with hands drenched in blood. Get out!" Before her father could say a word, the silver-haired girl, with tears shimmering in her eyes, furiously rebuked him, "You always pretend to be a knight, but would a knight attack defenseless common women and children? Would a knight raise his sword against those kind and honest citizens? Sate, I think you’re not much better than a demon from hell."

Scratching his head awkwardly, the young knight officer hurriedly explained, "Princess Vero, you’ve misunderstood, first of all, these people are not kind-hearted and honest commoners; they are the lazy and good-for-nothing ruffians and vagabonds from inside and outside the city. They were instigated by some people with ulterior motives to tarnish the Duke’s and our Galle Region’s honor and image, it’s not as simple as you imagine. Besides, we were only intimidating them to disperse, and there was no excessive behavior."

"Really? Can my own eyes deceive me? Are those women holding children also ruffians and vagabonds? Are those simply-dressed farmers also lazy and indolent? Are you telling me the blood that splashed when your and your subordinates’ whips struck them is also fake?" The silver-haired girl, filled with sorrow and indignation, showed a look of hatred in her dark eyes, which made the young knight inwardly curse.

Even though the silver-haired elder loved his daughter dearly, he couldn’t remain silent in such a situation. After all, the young knight was of noble birth and was highly favored by him. He also knew that the young man had special feelings for his daughter, which was why he tried to avoid the topic in response to Vero’s questioning. With so many outsiders present, especially with that uncaring bumpkin watching the drama unfold, he couldn’t let this continue.

"Vero, you are too presumptuous! How can you be so rude to Knight Sate? Apologize at once! Knight Sate was carrying out my orders, if you have any complaints, blame me instead. I don’t see anything wrong with dispersing these ignorant rioters, even if they were instigated and fooled by others, they should pay for their stupidity! You, out!" the silver-haired elder’s face suddenly turned cold, and his tone became unusually severe.

"Father?!" The silver-haired girl, probably never having seen her father treat her this way, especially not in front of so many people, felt her eyes redden, and tears finally started to flow from her clear, deep eyes, like a pool. She furiously shook off her father’s hands and rushed out the door, "I will never forgive you!"

Seeing the girl running out, the young knight, with a pained expression on his face, wanted to follow but was stopped by the silver-haired elder, "Knight Sate, since you are here, you might as well get to know these guests. This is Baron Komer, Lord of Caucasus in the Homer region; these gentlemen are Mr. Hozer and Mr. Zip from the Meine City-State; this is Melbourne Lord from the Susoer City-State; these gentlemen are Mr. Reese and Mr. Lafayette from the Myron Duchy. Gentlemen, please allow me to introduce Knight Sate Bonmings, one of the most valiant knights of our Galle region and the leader of my guards."

The Bonmings family is one of the most powerful families in the Galle Region, just below the Stolten family of Duke Zellin, and they are also the staunchest supporters of the Stolten family, which Duke Zellin represents. They held significant shares along the canal connecting Gutenberg and Odessa. Komer learned all of this from Palermo. As a lord, Komer was increasingly realizing how much more he had to learn and master. Relying solely on a baron’s title and concealed Dark Magic Force to stand firm in the kingdom’s high society was nothing but a pipe dream. Understanding key forces and individuals in every region of the kingdom, especially those adjacent to his territory or with vested interests, was essential, and without any doubt, this Sate was a member of the Bonmings family.

After introductions, there were naturally rounds of insincere but warm greetings, but the silver-haired elder quickly interrupted these trivial pleasantries, "The Northern Beastmen have breached our alliance’s Meine, Susoer, and Myron nations and city-states already in ruins. Sate, you are probably aware of this. Baron Komer is here to escort refugees from the Three Cities to settle in Caucasus and avoid becoming slaves to the beastmen. Unexpectedly, passing through our Galle Region, such an embarrassing incident has occurred. Knight Sate, you must investigate thoroughly and find out who has been instigating this mess, causing unwarranted rumors and trouble among my citizens. Root out these people and punish them severely."

"Rest assured, Duke, Sate will certainly catch those with ulterior motives and restore justice to the Duke and our Galle region," Knight Sate promptly followed his lord’s words and looked at the guests, "However, Sate cannot understand why you would go all the way to the harsh and evil Caucasus mountains. I’m not sure if the people accustomed to living in affluent areas can adapt. Caucasus is known in our kingdom for its poor mountains and treacherous waters, not only bordering the Barbarian Territory but is also haunted by Magical Beasts. Damarlinsk Castle is infamous throughout the whole Continent as The Land of Demon’s Curse. Your baron must have heard, that place is said to bring misfortune and nightmares."
