Chapter 311: Volume 5 Lord’s Path Chapter 3 Nightmare_2

At that thought, Komer subconsciously shook his head. As the other party had warned him, whether or not this was the truth, it was best not to delve into the authenticity of history without absolute strength. Any rash action would only lead to his total annihilation. Indeed, these things were worth the Church of Light taking all costs to reclaim, but what puzzled Komer was given the circumstances at the time, the Thunderhorse Knights could have searched the body and severed all worries, so why didn’t they realize this issue and simply killed the target before leaving, only to come to their senses later on?

Komer didn’t think this was due to the Thunderhorse Knights’ carelessness; there must be something fishy going on. Either the knights were only carrying out the task to kill the target and didn’t know about the items the thief was carrying, or they were completely unaware of these items and pursued the thief at all costs because the thief himself had a value worth their chase. Either way, it proved that the zombie thief, which was still under his control, of considerable value.

The matter was getting more complex and interesting. If it was as the ghostly last emperor of the Dark Empire had said, then he might really have a chance to witness the magnificent Dark Chapel. Though the Dark Empire had fallen, it didn’t mean everything it left behind had vanished; there might still be unexpected gains. However, the Dark Chapel was located to the northeast of the Kingdom of Nicosia, in the eastern Mogan Wilderness, a place even the beastmen were unwilling to inhabit. Magical Beasts roamed rampant there, and it was extremely dangerous—aside from adventurers, no one from the Blue Continent would go there.

Thinking of the Dark Chapel, Komer associated it with Damarlinsk Castle within his territory. The curse of the demon god had turned into a joke in the mouth of the last emperor; in his eyes, aside from the Blue Continent, which could be considered a Demonic Domain, anywhere else on the Continent could be as clear as day. The bravado of Kennifer III was enough to make anyone take note, and Komer didn’t know whether this claimed tyrant of a past life truly possessed power against the sky. But his grandiose words did alleviate a fair amount of Komer’s fears. After all, the unknown was always the most frightening. The strong Dark Magic Force from the Black Jade Demon Crystal that merged into his body also gave Komer some peace of mind. No matter what was hidden there, with the strong Dark Magic Force and his memories of magic ability, Komer might master this power quickly and perhaps even solve the mystery of Damarlinsk Castle himself.

Leaning languidly against the backrest, Komer’s face alternated between light and dark. This nightmare had come so suddenly, and in fact, he had some premonitions earlier. Every time his magic ability was about to improve, his sleep would be disturbed by bizarre sceneries and nightmares: giants, Beamon, flying dragons, skeletons, Magical Beasts, puppets, zombies, Elves, a medley of races and creatures fleeting like passing snippets, flitting through his mind, elusive and indistinct, hazy and chaotic. But today’s dream had unveiled the mystery behind all those strange encounters. The Guide of the Dark Demon God Hades, the heir of darkness; these terms had actually fallen upon him, giving him a rather ludicrous feeling, but it seemed to be a bizarre coincidence indeed.

If what Kennifer III said was to be believed, he was undoubtedly one of the greatest tragic figures in the war that shocked the Continent. Yet, he seemed to have little remorse or regret for the defeat that determined his and the Dark Empire’s fate, which Komer couldn’t comprehend. Could it be as he said, that a man can only claim true love after enduring betrayal and deception from the woman he loves and still remaining undeterred? Such an argument was preposterous, and Komer was certain he would never understand this.

Tracy’s visage flickered through Komer’s mind and faded away. He could now control his emotions well; the past bubbles up in his heart from time to time, but had gradually become calm. Time, he had learned from personal experience, was the best medicine for healing all emotional wounds. But witnessing the unyielding and fervent light in Kennifer III’ eyes, unchanged after hundreds of years, Komer began to wonder if his past love was truly genuine. What was it to relentlessly and unrepentantly pine for a woman who betrayed and deceived him, leading to his death and the downfall of his country; was it a pathological obsession, or a love imprinted deep in the bones? Komer couldn’t say. But could such feelings still be called love?

Komer didn’t want to delve further into Kennifer III’s romantic history. In his view, Kennifer III’s blinding love leading to his tragic end of both his life and kingdom was a common enough tale. It was only complicated by the mixture of forces and countries involved, and the fact that a Saintess from the Bright Holy Teaching could play the role of a femme fatale still surprised him.

Although Kennifer III wished to reveal this dark Chapter from history when the time was right, Komer made it clear that he should not have too high hopes. Komer could insincerely agree, but in reality, it was difficult to achieve. First, the Church of Light and the countries involved were too powerful, and second, he was merely a minor country lord struggling to survive. To reach a position where he could ignore their power seemed like a hopeless fantasy, and he couldn’t promise something so uncertain.

However, Komer was still very interested in the fascinating historical snippets that he was told, many of which weren’t accessible to the average person. At certain times, he might even play an unexpected role. Kennifer III’s emotional saga was indeed tear-jerking, and the tragic fate of Saintess Uma was equally lamentable. Yet, what Komer admired more was the Bright Holy Teaching’s ability to unite various national forces and bring down the soaring Dark Empire at the most critical moment, a testament to the relentless emergence of talent within the Church.

The Dark Empire, a swath of historical dust someone had intended to bury, had come across his path through strange circumstances. Would he be the one to lift the veil on this part of history?

Gazing at the buildings starting to take shape on the horizon, Komer looked enviously at the vast plains towering abruptly from the earth below the sky. This was the central territory of Duke Zellin, the greatest Lord of the Empire—the Galle Region. A plain even more vast and fertile than the Busen Plain under Duke Philip’s jurisdiction, spanning hundreds of kilometers, with endless fields, an elaborate irrigation system, well-developed roads, and an east-west canal passing through it. The capital of the Galle Region, Gutenberg, was situated on the canal’s banks, the very city now appearing before Komer.

Being the kingdom’s largest food production area, it was undoubtedly the biggest grain trade location and also a hub for many essential items. The canal from Gutenberg to Natway was the most crucial connective passage between the Nether Sea coastal area and the Blue Continent’s hinterland, so busy that it ranked among the top three in the entire Blue Continent. A major north-south highway also cut through the city, and its significance, whether military or commercial, required no further explanation. The pivotal transportation hub and the core position as a grain-producing area solidified Duke Zellin’s stature in the Kingdom, rivaling that of His Majesty the King, and made Duke Zellin’s Finance Officer the greatest creditor to the Ministry of Finance. The Nirvana Knights guarding Gutenberg too were second only to the King’s own Fire Shadow Knights regiment in power.
