Chapter 241 - 8: Intervention

Chapter 241: Chapter 8: Intervention

Six people stood silently on the hill, looking at the distant town. Komer gazed ahead thoughtfully. The blonde Half-Beastman who followed closely behind Komer looked very different from when they had first met. His neatly combed blonde hair seemed to shine with a hint of golden luster. His rugged appearance was somewhat polished by the fitted short merchant’s outfit he wore, making him look more like a successful small merchant than before, except his sharp gaze remained unchanged.

Komer’s expression was dark. He had not expected the Homer Army to arrive so quickly. In just a few short days since they had infiltrated Leon, the Homer Army had already made significant moves. Leaving only five hundred soldiers to guard Bruce Fortress, over five thousand soldiers struck Banassia with the speed of lightning, catching the rebellious armed forces in the North completely off-guard. Almost twenty thousand armed slaves were helpless against the diamond-shaped battle formation of the Homer Army, which used its overwhelming momentum to break through the main force. Over four thousand slaves lost their lives in the battle, and more than six thousand were captured. More than three hundred slave heads hung throughout Banassia Town, while the remaining thousands of slaves mostly fled south under the leadership of a person known as the Saving Knight. They retreated into the eastern Izmir region to join the local rioters, while a small fraction scattered and fled. As for the captured slaves, apart from some who were beheaded to make an example, the majority were reclaimed by the mine owners who followed Homer’s army with their private soldiers and were turned back into slave miners.

The fierce strike of Homer’s army had completely devastated the once-flourishing Northern rebel forces. It made the rioters, who had always thought they possessed an invincible armed force, realize that their fighting strength was insignificant compared to a regular army. The prowess of the Homer Army also threw them into panic, and they didn’t know how to deal with this relentless and powerful enemy.

It was under these circumstances that Komer’s party arrived at Mandu, a key town in southern Leon. Considering the poor performance of the rioters, the southward-moving Homer Army divided into two groups. One marched directly toward Izmir, to the south of Banassia, while the other changed course to advance southwest, ready to crush once and for all the slave rioters’ most important stronghold in Leon, Mandu Town.

"Maha Gummi, you say they hope for our help, but what kind of help are they looking for now? We have already provided them with weapons, food, and all sorts of supplies as agreed, haven’t we? What else could they possibly need?" Komer was clearly also surprised by the weakness of the rebel forces, and his concern was evident. Although Komer had never expected the rioters to defeat Homer’s army, he was deeply disappointed by the outcome of them collapsing at the mere touch despite outnumbering Homer’s forces. The turn of events added to the worries in his heart.

"Sir, it’s not about weapons, food, or those sorts of things anymore. These armed slaves have never undergone formal training; they simply can’t break through the tight formations of a regular army. They can only watch powerlessly as Homer’s Army breaks through their loose lines. I’ve heard that a Mage from Cyprus used magic, calling down lightning from the sky, which immediately overwhelmed the already faltering will of the armed rioters. Their defensive line collapsed on the spot, so Homer’s Army managed to achieve such a significant victory without any losses. Therefore, these rioters now hope that we can directly participate in combat, preferably by providing them with commanders or even Mages. Uh, they’ve also realized that we Caucasus have been supporting them all this time, so..." Perhaps feeling that the rebels’ requests were somewhat unreasonable, Maha Gummi’s tone hesitated, worried that his words would anger the Lord.

"Hmph, now they think of us? Why didn’t they accept our advice from the beginning?" Komer snorted indifferently, seemingly unsurprised by the requests. It was an expected development. Although the rebel forces were large in number, and the Caucasus had provided them with plenty of arms and supplies, for a force of 80,000 rioters, the support from the Caucasus, combined with the weapons they had acquired from defeating Noble private soldiers, was still far from enough. Moreover, they desperately lacked formal training, which couldn’t be remedied overnight. Although Komer, through Maha Gummi, had suggested to the rioters after their victories that they slow their expansion, strengthen formal training, and even secretly offered military instructors from the Caucasus if they wished, the rioters, blinded by their victories, expanded rapidly without heeding the Caucasus’ advice. Now, they were tasting the bitter consequences.

"Sir, as you know, most of these people are of slave origin, lacking insight and long-term planning. They were blinded by superficial victories. Such combat might have a chance against similarly untrained local Noble private soldiers, but against Homer’s regular army, there’s only a path to certain death. If we don’t help them now, I can assure you that within a fortnight, both Mandu and Izmir will fall back into the hands of Homer’s Army, and the rioters might even flee toward our Caucasus en masse." Maha Gummi never hid his disappointment in his fellow countrymen and had a profound understanding of the armed forces organized by them, never believing they could defeat Homer’s army.
