Chapter 96: 96. Don’t Want To Share
Jael threw himself into bed. The sheets felt tacky and he could hear even the slightest movements he made. He had taken a shower and he just wanted to sleep but found that he couldn’t.
He laid still, clearing his thoughts but he still couldn’t stop his mind from running rampant. The paler that had escaped was pretty worrisome, especially at a time like this.
A huge part of him hoped this was some big coincidence and there was nothing to worry about but somehow he could tell something wasn’t right, it might not be what he thought but he knew something was up.
Jael sat up with an exasperated sigh. The day was just starting and even though he was tired and badly needed to sleep, he knew he wouldn’t be able to even if he spent time in bed.
He ran his hands through his hair. He wanted to leave her to herself, she had looked sick enough and it was obvious that she was in pain. However, he was used to sleeping with her warmth against his body.
For the past two days, he has been busy making sure everything was in place and ready for the party. He had been stuck in his study replying to unnecessary letters that were necessary for some reason.
Vampires loved to make a ceremony out of everything but considering they had all the time in the world, it was understandable. His impatience, however, knew no bounds and he pissed him off that so much time was wasted.
Jael stood to his feet there was no point stalling. The faster he could get comfortable, the faster he could sleep. Sundown was going to be worse than last night. All the Lords are going to arrive except the ones exempted.
He needed to be in the right state of mind to receive the guest, or else he couldn’t prevent himself from making drastic decisions.
Jael threw the door open, he did want to wake her but he knew there was no point in being quiet. As soon as he touched the bed, she would wake up.
He walked in and he could hear her soft breathing. He walked closer to the bed and just stood by the side watching her sleep. Her black long lashes lay easily on the top of her cheeks.
Her black hair with streaks of white was neatly tied up. All gathered in a bun. The bun was messy and full but it held her hair together in a way he didn’t like.
He walked even closer to the bed and sat on it, the bed dipped at the added weight and her eyes immediately flew open.
"Hey," she said with a smile.
She still looked as if she was battling with falling asleep.
"I haven’t seen you in a while," her voice sounded drawled and Jael was surprised he understood every word.
"I have been busy," he mumbled and lay down.
"I know, I didn’t expect to see you."
"You don’t sound very happy to," he said while laying on his back and looking at her from the corner of his eyes.
"I am, I just had a terrible day, and being stuck in here wasn’t helping."
"I see, it is just for three more nights."
Mauve’s eyes nearly popped out of their sockets, "Three! Don’t you mean two?"
"Don’t overthink it as soon as the party’s over and the vampires are gone you can roam as you like again."
He leaned forward and buried his nose in her hair. He could never get over the smell and considering how he was covered in paler’s stench and all, this was definitely much better.
"Why can’t I go out now?" She asked and moved backward so she was looking at his face again.
Jael dropped his hand and returned to the lying position. "Don’t worry about it, it will be over before you know it."
Mauve pouted but didn’t say anything. "How did you say go? Did any more Lords show up? I only saw Lady Marceline and Lord Alaric."
"Hmm, not really."
"Then what did you do throughout the day?" She asked again, peering into his face.
Jael brow dipped, she was unusually chatting today. Well, usually she was but as soon as he was cold about the subject, she often dropped it but today was different. He wondered if it was because she was stuck in the room all day.
"Nothing really," he said again, hoping she would drop it and fall asleep.
"I am sure you did something, maybe not today but definitely in the past two days..."
"How’s your stomach?" He asked abruptly. "You told Mill it was hurting earlier."
"Oh, um yes. It is much better now. I spent all day in bed so yeah, definitely much better. It still hurts a little but I can ignore it."
"I see, that’s good. You should go to sleep."
"Well, I spent all night sleeping. I don’t think I can sleep anymore. It was a little weird as it has been a while since I slept in the night." She chuckled.
He slipped his hand underneath her and pulled her closer. "I see. I had a hectic day but nothing unusual. I am pretty tired and I just want to sleep."
"Ah, yes of course. I will let you get some rest."
It went quiet and Jael closed his eyes. He was happy with the silence, he could sleep now. She wiggled in his arms a little and his eyes immediately flew open but she quickly settled down.
After a couple of minutes, Jael felt her hands run across his chest as she traced the lines. "What do you think you are doing?"
She immediately pulled her hand away and her face reddened. "I thought you were sleeping."
"I was," he mumbled.
"Sorry, I got distracted by my thoughts."
"What are you thinking about?" It was as if he cared but if it helped her sleep faster, he was willing to listen.
"Nothing important. Just home and Vae."
Jael felt himself frown, he always prevented himself from thinking about how she felt being all alone in a strange place and if she wanted to go back.
"If Vae is doing alright. It will be nice to hear from her," she said with a weak smile.
Jael squinted and stared at her. "You can send a letter if you want." He announced.
Mauve immediately sat upright, "I can?" She asked, quite shocked.
Jael’s face softened at her reaction. "Of course, well, I don’t know if it will get to her specifically but you can send letters to the castle."
Mauve smiled hard and suddenly her face fell. It was obvious she had thought of something that countered sending the letter.
"What?" he asked.
"I don’t think she can read." She rubbed her nose and laid down to sleep.
"I am sure she will find someone to read it to her. It can be that hard to find someone who reads."
She carefully placed her head on his chest. "No."
Her mood was better and Jael wondered if this meant he could get some sleep. "Write it tomorrow and I’ll send it out for you."
"Write it?"
Jael could hear the uncertainty and horror in her voice. "Yes. Mill will bring you some ink tomorrow and I am sure if I check my study I should find something you can use."
"T-thank you."
Jael frowned, "Is something wrong?" He asked.
She shook her head but her heartbeat increased. "Not really," mumbled after a few seconds had passed. "I just have never written a letter before."
"It’s not difficult, just write what you would say to her in person." He said and Mauve nodded.
However, he could sense that something else was wrong but when she didn’t say anything, he didn’t pester. He wanted her to keep quiet, if this was working he wasn’t about to question it.
He closed his eyes and settled into the pillow. He could feel her blinking against his chest but with the sound of her heartbeat, he could tell that it wouldn’t be long before she fell asleep.
She adjusted in his arms, trying to get comfortable. Jael winced, it was funny how he could hear everything she did, her breathing, her pulse, her heartbeat, and her movements against the sheets, yet it didn’t annoy him.
She was asleep at this point and he could feel her breath against his shoulders. He lifted his other hand and wrapped it around her pulling her to him as he soaked up her warmth.
She was soft and everything about her was squishy. His hand trailed downwards and he squeezed a little. They felt bigger, he wondered if it was because of what her body was going through.
She was so small against his huge frame and he couldn’t help but chuckle at the difference. He could crush her easily.
He knew he was keeping her hidden for her own good but he also knew it was also an act of selfishness. She was his and he wasn’t obligated to share, and neither did he want to.
