Chapter 81: 81. He Won’t Be Joining Us
Mauve slowly rose to her feet, she shook her dress shaking off whatever may have gotten onto it as laid on the floor. She walked further into the library as her eyes scanned the books.
She did not want to read but unfortunately, there was nothing else for her to do and she would rather do this than sit in bed all night making assumptions as her imagination was bound to get out of hand.
She groaned, she couldn’t wait for the garden to be ready. The fact that she couldn’t go outside was starting to get to her. Standing in the sun again was something she was thrilled about.
Mauve stopped in her tracks as her eyes settled on a book. The cover was captivating. She was walking towards it before she even decided whether she wanted to read it or not.
She pulled out the book and stared at it. The workmanship was intricate. All the books in the library had great covers but she could see the fine details on this particular cover and even though she had no clue about this sort of thing she could immediately tell it was well done.
She flipped the book, her hands were killing her a little. Despite how small the book looked it had quite the weight. There was nothing on the back too except the designs.
She frowned and turned the book to the front. She flipped it open and her look of confusion changed to a blank expression. Words she did not understand or had a clue about stared back at her.
Mauve was not surprised, it would have been more surprising if she had opened it and could immediately understand its contents. As usual, there was no name. Well, if there was, she probably wouldn’t be able to read it.
She returned the book and picked the book underneath it.
She checked to make sure it was something she wanted to read and skipped out of the library. She got to her room in no time, shutting the door and sliding into bed.
She laid on her back and opened the first page. Mauve sighed loudly and tried to take out joy in what she was about to do but she was extremely tired of just reading. If she could engage in any other activity, she was certain she would be thrilled again.
She was still struggling to try to read when she heard a knock on the door. Mauve frowned and immediately sat upright. A knock met it was time for the second meal of the day. She found that a little too hard to believe.
It felt as though it had just been a couple of minutes since she left the library, not hours. However, by the way, her stomach churned a little, she knew it was almost time.
"Come in," she mumbled and Mill walked in.
Mill shut the door behind her and briskly approached Mauve’s bed, "The second meal is ready. Would you want to have it in your room?"
Mauve shook her head and immediately jumped out of bed. "No, I will join them in the hall." She responded as she stood to her feet.
"Alright then, Mauve." Mill said and gave her a little nod.
Mauve smiled faintly at her and the vampire made her way out of the room. Mauve sighed and sat back on the bed. The days were running faster than she could catch them and it did piss her off that at the end of each day she couldn’t think of anything worthwhile she had done.
She snapped out of her thoughts and pulled herself together. She stood to her feet again and ran her hands through her hair. She knew it was messy, she rushed to the dresser and picked up the brush.
Mauve groaned as she pulled on the brush, she should have asked Mill for help. She spent some time brushing her hair, she almost gave up at some point. When she was finally done, she smiled at her reflection and walked out of the room.
She got to the dining hall, the guards were standing by the door. She smiled briefly at them, she couldn’t remember the last time they let her in. None of them glanced in her direction; they just held the door open for her to pass through.
She picked up her dress and walked in. The brightness of the dining hall made her squint. She blinked quickly as she tried to force her eyes to adjust to the light.
As soon as she could see again, she noticed that Damon, Danag, and Erick were already seated. From where she was standing she could feel Erick’s glare on her. She rushed to the table and immediately sat down.
"What took so long?" Danag questioned. "Mill informed us you will just us minutes ago."
"Oh," she frowned slightly, wondering what this was about when Jael and Lady Jevera weren’t even here. "I didn’t realize I was late."
"I told you we should have started without her," Erick blurted out.
She refused to look at him as she sat down. As soon as she was seated, a servant put a plate in front of her, and food was placed on it.
"She is here now, stop whining," Danag said to Erick.
The words were barely out of his when they all dug into their plates. Mauve eyes widened in shock.
"Wait, aren’t we waiting for Jael?" She asked, a little worried.
"No need for that princess, the Sire won’t be joining us," Danag replied between chewing. She was fascinated as to how he could speak so clearly with that amount of food in his mouth.
"Why?" She suddenly felt antsy.
"He has a lot of work to do and will dine in his study," Danag explained. He was the only one that seemed to care about her confusion.
"Oh, what about Lady Jevera then? Shouldn’t we wait for her?"
"No need." It was Erick who replied. "They are both having the second meal in his study."
"Oh, I um, I see." She stuttered and picked up her cutlery with shaky hands.
She ate the rest of her meal with shaky hands and was surprised she was able to finish it. She could barely taste the food as she ate but she was hungry so she chewed and swallowed.
By the time she was done, she was the last person left in the hall. She said her thanks to the servant before she walked out of the hall. The guards held the door open for her, she was surprised they were still there.
She mumbled her thanks as she quickly made a hasty retreat back to her room. She closed the door a little too loudly and jumped onto her bed as she tried to calm her thoughts.
"His study, not his room." She said into her sheets.
"Maybe they are working together," but even as the words left her lips, she didn’t believe it.
She rolled and screamed into the sheet. She picked up the book and tried to read it again. It didn’t work and she felt more and more miserable with each page.
She closed it shut and buried herself underneath the sheets. Sleeping was the only other option she had. As much as she was tired of it, there was nothing else for her to do.
At this point, Mauve had lost count of the number of times she had rolled from one end of her bed to the other. Nothing she did worked, she couldn’t sleep.
She sat upright and tried the book again. She was trying to while away time but compared to earlier, the day was definitely taking its time.
Mauve nearly cried in relief when she heard Mill’s knock. She jumped out of bed and opened the door to let Mill in.
"Mauve," Mill said, her surprise apparent. She cleared her throat, "I wanted to tell you that the last meal is ready."
"Thank you, Mill. I will be downstairs in less than five minutes."
"That’s perfect," Mill said with a small smile and turned to leave.
"Mill," Mauve called softly.
"Yes, Mauve."
"Do you know if Jael would be joining us for the last meal?" She asked, there was a crack in her voice as she spoke.
"Hmm," Mill said, she looked to be thinking. "I don’t think so. I think I saw Mister Herbert taking his Grace’s meal upstairs."
"I see," Mauve said and her expression. "Do you think I can have my meal in my room?"
"Yes of course," she immediately replied.
"I will prefer that please, I am sorry if I am being a bother."
"No, you are not being a bother princess. It is fine. I’ll bring your meal upstairs. It must be boring eating with just the boys anyway."
Mauve smiled faintly at her and watched as Mill walked away before she closed the door. She walked to her bed and threw herself on it for the umpteenth time.
