Chapter 788. He Keeps His Word

Chapter 788: 788. He Keeps His Word

Jael stood as close as he could, the sunlight streaming from the open doors was almost within inches of his feet, while Mill stood back with a look of concern on her face.

However, she knew she couldn’t convince the Primus to step back, and he also insisted on leaving the door open until Mauve returned.

"You’re going to get yourself killed," a voice said from the top of the stairs.

Both Mill and Jael turned to see Louis standing in the dark, but only Mill looked surprised to see him. Jael simply had a look of disdain on his face.

"Lord Louis," Mill said with a curtsey.

Louis simply waved at her response, but he didn’t look in her direction. Mill felt her heart squeeze at this. The relationship between her and Louis was pretty strained at this point, but try as she might, there didn’t seem to be any way to remedy it.

"What are you doing here?" Jael asked with clear irritation, turning away from Louis to the doorway just in time to see Mauve as she waved at him. Jael smiled and his hand twitched to respond to her wave, but he kept it by his side.

Mauve hummed to herself as she went down the stairs with Ferguson. Now that they were away from Jael, he seemed less nervous. His grip on her hand as he helped her down the stairs was loose but firm. She said she could go down by herself, but he was adamant.

"I truly apologize for making you do something so uncomfortable," he said as they got to the bottom of the stairs, letting go of her hand.

"I already told you there is nothing to worry about," Mauve said and rested her hands on her waist as she looked around.

"Still, your brother, the crown prince of Greenham would scold me if he heard about this."

"Of course not," Mauve said. "He would agree that Madeline’s health is more important than anything else. This way, the faster we get there, the better. I worry what you need may not be there."

"Even if it may not be the herb in particular if I can find a different herb that works in its place, it would make all the difference."

Mauve nodded and took the turn to the other side of the castle, the part she had gone to with Jean. It wasn’t too far from the castle, and she knew they could get this over with as soon as possible.

Ferguson could barely hold back his surprise when he saw the spread of herbs. "How are they all gathered in one position like they had been purposely grown here?" Ferguson asked with clear surprise.

To anyone, they looked like weeds just growing sporadically, but that wasn’t the case at all. There were all kinds of herbs, even the types Ferguson couldn’t get his hands on in Greenham.

"I have no idea. I didn’t even know they were useful until Jean pointed it out," she said with a laugh. "If you walk further in, you’ll see some more."

Mauve stood back with one hand on her stomach and another on her waist. She knew she wouldn’t be of much help while Ferguson was searching for the herbs, so it was better if she stood out of the way.

"I don’t need to. I already see what I need and more. I’ll get to plucking."

"All right," Mauve said with relief.

It was quiet for a bit without any conversation between them, but she could hear Ferguson grunt and mutter to himself as he cut the herbs.

Not surprisingly, it didn’t take too long, and Ferguson was out of the bushes—but instead of heading for the castle, he stopped in front of Mauve in such an abrupt manner it startled her.

"Is something wrong, Ferguson?" she asked with a soft gasp.

"I apologize for startling you, but would it be all right if we had a word before we venture into the castle? I’m afraid what I have to say might not suit the ears of vampires."

"Yes, of course," Mauve said, blinking rapidly. "Of course."

"Thank you," he replied stiffly. "The Vampire King treats you well; anyone can see that. However, just because you’ve found favor doesn’t mean the rest of us will," he started.

Mauve frowned. She was not surprised at his words, but she didn’t expect Ferguson to be this direct. "Do you disapprove of what I am trying to do?" she asked, wondering where his contention was.

Ferguson shrugged, clutching his catch tighter. "I neither disapprove nor approve. I have no thoughts on it, except that it would be a good thing for us to get our hands on magic."

"I agree with the latter part—magic would help us a lot. However, I truly think we can coexist with vampires amicably."

Ferguson scoffed. "That remains to be seen. If they didn’t need us, they wouldn’t be so willing to compromise. I fear what would happen when they have the upper hand once again."

"There is nothing to fear," Mauve said confidently.

Ferguson glanced at her stomach. "I hate to burst your fairytale bubble, Princess, but some things are easier said than done."

Mauve’s face paled. If Ferguson didn’t think it was possible, then he might not support them, and even if Mauve would prefer they had support from both of them, one would still get the job done.

"Does that mean you won’t vote in favor of vampires?" Mauve asked.

Ferguson scoffed. "I’ll never vote in favor of vampires. If it doesn’t benefit us, I will never consider it. We should head back into the castle. We don’t want their Vampire King to get mad."

It took Mauve a few seconds to recover from what Ferguson had just told her. As much as she wanted to ask him more questions on the matter, she knew she couldn’t. All she could do was try to convince him that vampires were redeemable.

She didn’t have a long time, but it was already pretty clear which one was going to be the harder of the two to convince. Still, she wasn’t going to give up. Not now, not ever.

"The Primus won’t be mad," she said, defending her husband. "He agreed to let us out here. He keeps his word."

Ferguson looked taken aback. "I apologize, Princess. I wasn’t trying to be rude. I just meant to express that the Primus would like it if you returned to the castle soonest."

Mauve didn’t say anything to this. She just walked ahead of him, and while going up the stairs, she refused to accept his help. Ferguson realized he must have vexed her, so he didn’t push.

Jael almost took a step forward when Mauve appeared at the entrance. She had a bright look on her face, and Ferguson’s hands were filled with herbs. By the look on her face, he could tell that Ferguson found what he was looking for.

"Stay," Louis said, noticing his movement.

"Shut it!" Jael shot back.

Mauve walked in, and the guards hiding behind the door quickly closed it. As if unshackled, Jael took off like a flash, appearing in front of her. Mauve smiled brightly at him, resting her head against his chest. Front hugs these days were hard.

"How did it go?" he asked as he traced his fingers through her hair.

"Wonderful," Mauve beamed at him, pulling away to look at his face. "Ferguson found what he needed."

"Good," Jael said and swept her off her feet.

Mauve yelled in shock, but that quickly turned into giggling.

"Let’s get you to bed," Jael said and started for the stairs. "And Mill?"

"Yes, Sire."

"No more interruptions."

"Yes, Sire."

"Don’t scold Mill," Mauve said with a stern tone to her voice, but it was clear she was teasing. She rested her head against Jael’s chest, peeking up at him while he gently carried her to his room.
