Chapter 779. Good Feeling

Chapter 779: 779. Good Feeling

Mauve arrived at the dining hall with Jael. He quickly led her to her seat, mindful of her stomach as she sat down. Mauve smiled at him and then turned her gaze to Lady Marceline, who was seated next to her.

She was met with peering eyes as Lady Marceline studied her. "How did the meeting go?" she asked Mauve directly.

"Not great." It was Louis who replied. He leaned back in his seat, staring at them. "I didn’t expect your brother to be such a pain."

"Louis!" Mauve scolded. "Don’t say that about Malcolm, and you heard his reasons."

"Yes, I can’t dispute them, but we don’t have a lot of time on our hands right now. Who knows when next?"

"Are you more worried about the attacks or the fact that you can’t teach more people magic as fast as you want?" Jael interrupted, tossing a glare in Louis’s direction.

Louis smiled. "You got me."

"We can wait," Jael said. "It’s not a long time. Besides, we have battled Palers for this long and have continued to remain on the losing side. Now that we can finally turn that over, there is no need to be impatient."

"Wow!" Louis said with wide eyes as he looked at Jael.

"What?" Jael asked, shooting him another glare.

"I never thought I’d see the day when you, of all people, would speak about patience."

"Shut it, Louis, if you have nothing good to say."

Louis raised his hand in mock surrender, but the smirk on his face was still clear as day.

Mauve smiled despite herself. She was glad they were willing to listen to Malcolm and not try to force things. As Malcolm had said, they were still vampires, and humans had suffered a lot at their hands. It would take a lot to trust them, but at least Jael was willing to go with Malcolm’s plan. It was a good start.

She couldn’t help but worry, though. What if the people Malcolm sent had nothing but bad news to say about vampires and this plan didn’t fall through? What else would they do then?

Mauve turned her gaze to Jael, and he looked at her with a raised brow, then stretched his hand to touch her. Mauve couldn’t help but smile, almost forgetting her worries. They would figure it out, one way or another. All she could do was prepare herself to convince her people that vampires had some good in them. She had seen it—she just needed to make others see it too.

"Aren’t you going to eat?" Jael asked as he took his hand away.

"I will," she replied and turned away from him, picking up her cutlery as she began to eat.

"Have you had any discomfort lately?" Lady Marceline asked. She could see Lord Alaric poking his head out of the corner. He didn’t say anything, just stared.

Mauve shook her head. "Not in the slightest," she mumbled with food in her mouth.

"You are drawing very close to your due date," Lady Marceline commented.

Before Mauve could reply, she felt a kick in her stomach and gasped. Lady Marceline’s face brightened immediately.

"Oh, the little one is trying to join in on the conversation," Lady Marceline giggled excitedly. "Can I touch your stomach?" she asked.

"Of course, the baby likes the attention," Mauve smiled in response.

Jael glowered at the exchange, but he did not interrupt nor stop them. The rest of the table just carried on as though nothing was happening.

Lady Marceline quickly placed her hand over Mauve’s stomach and immediately pulled it away. "The baby kicked again!" Her smiling face met Mauve’s.

Mauve giggled. "I told you the baby liked the attention."

"Come on," Lady Marceline said and pulled her mate’s hand.

"No," he whispered. "Not at the table."

"Mauve doesn’t mind, or do you?"

"No," Mauve laughed, enjoying the petrified look on Alaric’s face.

"Don’t encourage her," Alaric mumbled in horror.

"My apologies, Lord Alaric," she teased and resumed eating.

Lady Marceline didn’t pester him anymore, and Mauve could have sworn she saw a look of disappointment on Alaric’s face when Lady Marceline stopped pestering him.

She thought it was a little funny, but he wasn’t as completely closed off as he usually was, and she couldn’t help but think he might be warming up to the house. This was a good thing. She had been a little worried because there was still a while to go, and she didn’t think Lady Marceline would leave immediately after the birth of her child. She didn’t want Lord Alaric to stay this long if he wasn’t completely comfortable.

"Do you want more food?" Jael asked, pulling her out of her thoughts.

Mauve jerked her head towards him. She couldn’t even be angry. Usually, she hated this question, but ever since she got pregnant, it didn’t feel like she was eating enough and had to eat constantly. She ate between meals, ate before she slept, and ate as soon as she woke up. She had no idea this was what it meant to be pregnant.

However, Mauve knew she would have it no other way. She was grateful she got to experience this and even more so that it was with the vampire she loved—especially after thinking she might never bear his child.

"Yes, please," she said with a bright smile. "I’d like seconds."

Jael gestured to the servants, and they moved quickly, dishing out more food for her. Mauve smiled and dug in as soon as they stepped away, munching satisfactorily.

If it weren’t for the incident with the Palers looming over them, everything would have been perfect. But Mauve was optimistic that they would figure it out. Maybe it was the baby, but recently, she had a good feeling about a lot of things.

"If you want more, don’t hesitate to say," Jael teased.

"It’s not my fault. The baby takes after his father, making me eat so much."

Louis snorted, and Jael shot him a look.

"Sorry, sorry," Louis said, but he didn’t stop laughing, and Mauve joined him. Even Jael spared a smile when he saw she was laughing.
