Chapter 749: 749. Have a Little Faith
"Surely, that can’t be a bad wish?"
"No, it’s not." Mauve shook her head. She wasn’t crying anymore, and he wiped the remaining tears from her face. "But what if this is the way to end Palers for good? Won’t you consider it?"
She raised her head to look at Jael’s face, their eyes meeting, his hand still on her face. His movement froze, and Mauve was greeted with silence before he pulled his hand away to run it through his hair.
"I don’t know," he reluctantly admitted.
"Jael," Mauve called as she moved on top of him, mindful of her tummy. "I am not worried. I know you can keep me safe."
"That makes one of us," he said as she ventured closer.
"I am sure you can," she said as she rested on him.
"I would really like to believe that, Mauve, but everything keeps getting out of hand, and I don’t want to take any chances, especially not now." He placed his hand on her stomach, and she looked down.
"I know," she mumbled, slowly nodding her head. "But this is something that could change everything. We would be rid of Palers forever. Is it truly something you can’t consider?"
Jael sighed and rested his head against the back of hers. "I would need some time to think about it."
Mauve nodded immediately. This was progress. As long as she was no longer getting an adamant "no," they could work around it. "Take all the time you need. I won’t do anything you don’t want."
Jael lifted his head from hers, and she tilted her head back to look at his face.
"In the meantime," he started, "you are not allowed to do anything reckless. You are to remain in the castle, and no more lessons."
"We already stopped. I told you that," she pouted.
"I just want to clarify," Jael stated.
Mauve simply nodded. She couldn’t get angry, not when she was at fault here. Besides, the only reason she wasn’t having lessons anymore was because of Louis, so technically, Jael wasn’t wrong.
"I’m fine with doing things your way. Anything you want, I’ll do that." Though she hated the idea of being stuck indoors, she deserved it. Things could have gone awry—she knew that more than anyone. She was surprised Jael wasn’t scolding her more than he had. "And I’m sorry for keeping it from you."
Jael’s eyes narrowed. "Is there anything else you’re keeping from me?"
Mauve turned her upper body to look at him. "What are you talking about? Of course not."
"I’m just checking." His tone shifted. "Why didn’t you tell me before now, and I had to find out this way? If this hadn’t happened, would you have ever told me?"
Mauve turned away so her back was to him once again. She folded her arms and closed her eyes. "You know why I couldn’t tell you. You would’ve been against it." She opened her eyes.
"Of course, I would. It’s dangerous. You could have been hurt," Jael said.
"But I wasn’t. Have a little faith. I know you have your reasons to distrust Louis, but do you really think he would put my life in danger like that?" This wasn’t the question Mauve wanted to ask. She wanted to ask why he was so certain it was dangerous. That was all he said. Why didn’t he want her to be part of it? It made her worry.
Jael’s fists clenched at her question, and his mind went to all sorts of places. He almost regretted letting Louis stay in the castle. "Louis can be selfish. He would put his wants first, the consequences be damned."
Mauve shook her head vehemently. "That’s not entirely true, at least not in my experience. He can be selfish, but he’s also equally caring," she stated.
Jael didn’t reply to this; he just went quiet. Mauve unfolded her arms, but for lack of what to do with her hands, she folded them again, lightly tapping a finger on her skin.
"Jael," Mauve called.
"Yes?"
Mauve’s face turned serious. She couldn’t just let it go. She had to know, even if curiosity led her to think the worst. "Did you know about magic before I mentioned it?"
Jael frowned. "I wouldn’t say I know about it, but it isn’t completely a myth. In some ways, I’d say it’s a bit of a taboo to talk about magic, but nobody has mentioned it in centuries if you exclude Louis. Also, I doubt that rule is still in effect." Besides, even if it was, he was the Primus now. He could change it as he liked.
Mauve’s brows furrowed in confusion. "What does that mean?" she asked. "It was a taboo to talk about magic?"
"Yeah," he replied.
"Why?" Mauve asked.
"I don’t know," Jael replied. "This was a rule set long before I was born. Besides, I don’t think it’s in effect anymore," he repeated.
Mauve nodded. Vampires who couldn’t use magic knew about it, but humans who could didn’t. From the way Louis spoke, it wasn’t a completely absurd concept—just not around here.
"You’re not saying anything," he said, touching the sides of her head.
Mauve sighed. "I was just wondering," she replied. "It doesn’t make sense."
"What doesn’t?" Jael asked.
Mauve just shook her head. She shouldn’t worry about things she couldn’t control. Right now, getting Jael’s approval to let her help in the vampires’ fight was more important. But first, she needed to send a letter to someone.
"Nothing. Jael," she suddenly called.
"Yes?"
"If my brother says he wants to pay me a visit, can you make sure he gets to the castle safely?"
Jael started to shake his head. "Now is not a good time, Mauve."
"No, not now. Sometime later. I just want to know you don’t mind."
Jael frowned but slowly nodded. If one of her family was willing to come see her, he couldn’t be against it. "Okay."
"Thank you," she replied with glee.
"Do you want to write a letter asking him to come here?" Jael asked, still confused about the whole thing.
"No," she shook her head. "Just in case he might, when I tell him about the pregnancy."
Mauve winced as she lied. Would this count as keeping a secret from Jael? It wasn’t a full idea yet; she still wanted to think about it for a while. She would tell him when she had made her decision.
