Chapter 741. Where Is Mauve?
Chapter 741: 741. Where Is Mauve?
"Lord Phelan’s estate was attacked last night," Erick blurted as Jael stepped aside to hear what he had to say.
Jael’s eyes widened, and several emotions passed across his face, but before he asked further questions, Jael pulled Erick further away. Vampires’s ears were quite sensitive. It wasn’t that he wanted to hide the information, but he didn’t want it to distract from what was currently going on.
"What?" he yelled when he was satisfied with the distance between them and the vampires on the field. "Are you sure?"
Erick nodded. He knew how important and serious the issue with Palers was. His father’s estate had also been attacked, he wouldn’t make a joke about this. "Yes, Sire. Lord Phelan sent a letter. The messenger didn’t stay. As soon as he gave the letter to the guard to give it to the Primus, he was gone. I didn’t even get to see him before he left."
Jael swore and looked at Erick. The fact that Erick wasn’t here with the letter meant he must have gone through it himself and decided to tell him. "How bad?" Jael asked.
"Very bad," Erick said with a solemn face. "Luckily, Lord Garth’s estate isn’t so far away. He was able to get some help, but not until after the damage was done."
Jael punched the wall. "Casualties?"
"Yes. Three vampires died, and one was taken away. I suppose it’s safe to admit they are dead. A lot of vampires were injured, but these aren’t injuries they can’t recover from."
Jael swore. "What else did Lord Phelan say?"
"Nothing else, surprisingly, but I can only assume this must be a tough time for him and his estate, and we will definitely hear his thoughts very soon."
Jael wanted badly to avoid this. That was why instead of spending more time with Mauve, they were here making sure they were prepared for attacks, but somehow Palers were still escaping them and wreaking havoc.
"Send supplies and a few guards to his estate. And blood too."
"Sire, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but we can’t exactly sen—"
"Just for a few days," Jael cut in. He didn’t care for the lord, but he wasn’t so cruel as to not send some help. Vampires meant the same to him, and to hear that they had been hurt and killed was something that chewed at him. "Just to give them supplies and be back. Where is the letter?"
"I left it in your study. I was going to bring it out here but decided against it."
"Good. I will read it on my own when I get back." Jael placed his palm on Erick’s shoulder. "Take care of this now."
"I can give the order and make sure there is enough blood for them to take, but I cannot send them out now, unfortunately. The sun would be up in about one to two hours. That’s not enough time to get to Lord Phelan’s estate."
Jael swore. He had forgotten about that. "Okay," Jael said. "As soon as the sun sets."
"Yes, Sire." Erick bowed.
"You may go," Jael said and watched him walk back into the castle. He turned and headed back to the field, his brows furrowed as he walked briskly.
He didn’t want to leave Mauve alone, but he also didn’t want to upset her with whatever Erick had wanted to say and thank goodness he had moved to the side—it was bad news.
He knew he could get paranoid and always felt bad that Mauve mostly had to be indoors even after he fixed the walls. He was sure Greenham wasn’t like that. Mauve could go wherever she wanted, whenever she wanted.
It was easy to forget this, as Mauve seemed content with being indoors and only moving around according to his commands, but with the pregnancy, she had become more demanding. Jael could only blame her pregnancy, but what did he expect from carrying his child? It wasn’t an easy feat.
Jael noticed right away as he turned the side of the castle that Mauve was no longer on the bench. His speed increased, reaching the seat in a flash. Danag wasn’t there either. He looked around quickly. Louis was busy with the fighters. There was no sign of Mauve beside him. However, that wasn’t the only problem either. He couldn’t sense her—she wasn’t close enough for him to pick up her presence. Where was she?
Jael took a step forward, ready to let all hell loose at her absence, but he immediately stood rooted to the spot as a familiar, nauseating smell wafted toward his nose. Everyone stopped what they were doing immediately.
Louis looked in Mauve’s direction; instead, he met Jael’s eyes, and they both wore similar expressions.
"Where is Mauve?!" Jael screamed as the vampires scrambled. This was the worst timing.
Some of the vampires fled the field, others got into battle positions. It was a commotion. Jael couldn’t blame them. If he could smell them, they were already within the walls. How many were they? Where were they? Jael swore. He didn’t have his ax here, hadn’t seen the need for it. It was just a training night.
Jael stood rooted to the spot as his head spun. His eyes scanned around as he wondered what direction he should run into first. If he went in the opposite direction, he would run further away from her. He was still deliberating the right action to take when Louis smacked him. He didn’t even realize Louis had reached him.
"Take left, I’ll take right," Louis yelled. "Damon, stay here with the rest of the vampires. Put yourselves in groups. The Palers would attack the clustered vampires. Mauve is human; the chances that she would be attacked first are slim, and I can’t see Danag—he must have gone after her. Move."
As soon as Jael heard these words, it was as though his feet unrooted, and he took off in the direction Louis had stated.
"Mauve!" he screamed. This wasn’t a good idea, but it wasn’t only her attention he was trying to get. If he could lure the Palers, someone else would find her.
