Chapter 738: 738. Overslept again and again

Mauve overslept the next night and woke up to Jael’s side of the bed empty. She could tell she had overslept immediately. She pushed herself to a sitting position with a grumpy look on her face as she thought about how Jael never learned.

She threw her legs over the bed and grumpily made her way to the corner of the room to summon servants. Mauve pulled, realizing as soon as her hand touched the string that she might have exerted more strength than she needed, but it was too late to control that now, as she had been irritated by the fact that Jael didn’t wake her up. What she didn’t expect was for the string to rip.

Mauve gasped, taking a step back, shocked at what she had done. There was no way she had just ripped that out of the wall. She looked closely and saw that the string had just cut; it was probably loose before she pulled so hard on it.

She picked the part that had fallen to the ground and walked back to the bed. She hoped it was something that could easily be replaced. Thankfully, it was Mill who answered her summon. Mauve almost jumped into her arms when she saw Mill, but all she did was hand the end of the string to her.

"What’s this?" Mill asked as she accepted it mid-greeting.

Mauve pointed to the wall. "I ripped it."

Mill’s jaw almost hit the ground. "How?" she asked.

"I think it was already loose," Mauve muttered. "Can it be fixed?" She didn’t want to dwell on the terrible mistake she made.

"Of course, I’ll ask someone to do that. Don’t worry about it. It will be fixed before you’re done with your first meal or before the end of the night."

Mauve nodded and stood from the bed. "Have you seen Jael tonight?" she asked.

Mill nodded. "I saw the Primus heading out earlier. If you want me to call him, I can get someone to do that."

"No," she shook her head. "I was just wondering." If he was busy, she didn’t want to bother him; after all, she would still see him during the second meal.

"Alright," Mill replied as she helped Mauve to her room.

Her bath was fast, and soon enough, she was eating her first meal. Mauve didn’t realize how much she was eating until it started getting hard to breathe. "I am full," she said and slowly got out of bed.

"I don’t think you should move so quickly," Mill said and rushed to her side.

"Don’t worry, I am not going far." The night before, she had left her knitting tools on the bedside table, but instead of asking a servant to bring them, she figured she could just go back to Jael’s room.

She would knit for a bit, then go check for Jael in his study. If he was there, she would probably keep him company until the second meal. If he wasn’t, she’d just visit Lady Marceline or do something else. There was a lot she could plan for the day.

"Are you comfortable?" Mill asked as she tried to arrange the covers over Mauve as she sat in the bed.

Mauve stopped her. "I am comfortable, just a little hot. Do you mind opening the windows as wide as possible? Some air would do me some good."

"Right away," Mill said and moved to the windows, pulling the curtains aside and throwing the windows open.

Mauve closed her eyes as she felt the breeze on her face. "That’s better."

"Is there anything else you need?" Mill asked.

Mauve shook her head. "You can go. I will call you if I need anything."

Mill hesitated and then slowly nodded her head. She left the room, but not before looking back at least five times to make sure that Mauve was indeed fine with her leaving. Mauve smiled and waved at her until the door closed. Then she sighed and lifted what she held. Was it a napkin or a scarf?

"No one will ever know," she chuckled at her response.

Mauve dropped it to the side and groaned as she lay down. Her fingers were a bit numb and sweaty—what an odd combination, but she wasn’t complaining. She would probably get out of bed soon. If Louis was still in the library, she would have been there by now.

She shut her eyes, annoyed by this. The next time Mauve opened her eyes, Mill was looking down at her with a concerned look on her face. "Are you okay?" Mill asked.

Mauve blinked and looked around as she tried to get her bearings. She must have fallen asleep. She had planned to go to the library even though Louis was not there or look for Jael, but somehow she had fallen asleep before she could even leave the bed.

Mauve slowly sat up, rubbing her eyes. "How long was I asleep for?"

"Well," Mill looked a little hesitant. Mauve looked up at her. "It has been some time since the second meal," she slowly said.

Mauve nearly lurched at Mill. "Why did you let me oversleep?"

"The Primus said I shouldn’t bother you."

"I can’t live like this, Mill."

"I am really sorry, my lady."

Mill didn’t sound so sorry. They were both the same to Mauve. However, Mill had clearly woken her up now. Mauve tugged at the neckline of her dress. It was hot—not in the way that made her sweat, more like the hotness you get from fevers. It was more uncomfortable than sweaty.

"Are you hungry?" Mill asked Mauve when she didn’t say anything.

"I’ll eat," Mauve said, but even if she had declined, Mill would have known she was lying as her stomach wasted no time in grumbling at the question.

"Wonderful, I will get your food immediately, and I’ll also inform the Primus that you’re awake."

Mauve didn’t reply to this. She just folded her arms with a grumpy expression on her face. At a loss for what to do, Mill just bowed and slowly left the room.
