Chapter 727. You’re Impossible

Chapter 727: 727. You’re Impossible

"Jael didn’t tell me anything," she mumbled. "I don’t think he will read the letters either."

"Hmm, I don’t see why you’re worried about that. I can definitely see why he would avoid the letters. They would all be asking for confirmation or, worse, demanding an explanation. Jael would want to answer neither."

It had been over a week since he mentioned the letters, but it was clear he hadn’t read them and had no intention to either. It slightly bothered Mauve, but at the same time, she wondered if she just wanted something to fixate on to distract herself. From what exactly? Mauve wasn’t sure.

"Yeah, I suppose you’re right," Mauve replied.

"I am always right," he smirked.

Mauve glowered at him before standing up to leave. "Jael will be here any minute now," she replied.

Louis didn’t show any reaction. "Would you like me to go with you?" he asked as he started to clear the table.

"No," she replied. She always had one guard or two who followed her around when Jael wasn’t with her, and they also waited outside. "There is no need for that."

Louis looked hesitant, but he didn’t press and just let her go. Mauve slowly made her way to the door and knocked twice on the huge doors, and then the guard on the other side of the door opened it. She could probably open the doors herself if she pushed with all her might, but Mauve didn’t see any reason to exert that amount of energy when she could just get someone to open it for her.

The guard bowed as she walked out the door and then trailed behind her as she made her way towards the stairs. Mauve wanted to go meet Jael. He was either in his study or outside. If it was the latter, she would just wait for him in one of the rooms.

Mauve wasn’t even at the stairs when she heard a familiar voice. "Are you sure she isn’t in her room?"

"I am afraid not, my lady. Last I checked, she was in the library with Lord Louis, and I would have to advise you not to bother them."

Sabrina shot the servant a look. "Well, tell her that I am here then. I am sure she would want to see me."

"I can’t—"

"Sabrina," Mauve called from the top of the stairs. "What are you doing here?" She grabbed the hem of her dress and sped down the stairs.

"Don’t rush," Sabrina cried and rushed towards the stairs.

Mauve got to the bottom just as Sabrina stopped in front of the stairs. "What are you doing here?" she asked excitedly.

"I can’t believe you’d ask that. Surely, you don’t believe I will hear such a rumor and not come to confirm it myself. My father has sent several letters, but the Primus refuses to respond. Thought that doesn’t matter. Congratulations!" Sabrina squealed. She looked like she wanted to grab Mauve in a hug but decided against it.

"You can tell?" Mauve asked.

"Yes!" She still sounded very excited. "Your child has a healthy heartbeat."

Mauve’s eyes widened. "You can hear that?" Mauve was shocked. Jael never mentioned that to her. She wondered how the vampires could tell she was pregnant. She never would have assumed it was something as simple as a heartbeat.

"Of course, and I am sure I would be able to hear more once they grow a little more. That’s unimportant. How do you feel?" Sabrina’s expression changed from excitement to worry.

"Not too differently," Mauve replied and glanced down at her stomach. "Except for throwing up once in a while and feeling drowsy."

"You’re throwing up?" Sabrina asked in shock.

"Yeah."

"Are you sure you’re okay?"

"Yeah," Mauve laughed. "It is pretty normal for humans to do that."

"Oh," Sabrina replied. "I suppose it’s a human baby too. That’s expected."

Mauve nodded. She was surprised Sabrina did not ask further questions. Most vampires refused to believe it. Even Lady Marceline had assumed the child wasn’t Jael’s because of how unbelievable it was to vampires that a human could carry a vampire baby.

"Are you eating enough?" Sabrina asked.

"Of course," Mauve giggled. "You don’t have to worry. I am very fine, I assure you."

"Mauve!" Jael’s thunderous voice called from the door of his study.

Mauve jerked her head up, wondering why he sounded so annoyed. "Jael," she whispered, watching him walk towards them. He was still far away, so it took him some time to reach where they stood at the bottom of the stairs.

"Sire," Sabrina bowed when he came close enough.

"What brings you here?" he asked without acknowledging her greeting.

"She came to see me," Mauve replied.

"Why?" Jael asked darkly.

"Jael," Mauve called and grabbed his arm.

"I apologize for not informing Your Highness about my plan to come to the castle beforehand, but I couldn’t help but rush here at the rumor. I wanted to congratulate Mauve myself."

"Are you alone?" he asked.

"Yes, just me and a few guards. There is no way my father would be able to make the journey here after just leaving the castle a few weeks ago. He also pleads that you give a reply to his several letters so he could congratulate you accordingly."

Mauve was a little shocked by this. She had half-expected the lord not to be very pleased about the news, but the way Sabrina said it, he wasn’t against it. However, this was also hard to say as Sabrina was on her father’s side too and could have phrased it so Jael wouldn’t think her father didn’t like the idea.

"I have my reasons for that," Jael said without missing a beat. "It’s too early to decide anything, and I was hoping I would be the one to break the news to the lords myself. But I suppose anything that happens in the castle never remains here."

Sabrina didn’t know what to say to this, so she just shuffled unsteadily, wondering if she was about to get kicked out of the castle. There was no way she would be able to get back out tonight. The Primus wouldn’t be so cruel as to put her out, but you could never know with the Primus.

"Sabrina just got here," Mauve cut in. "You can’t be angry at her for coming to see me. This is clearly a personal visit, no need to sound all formal and mean." Mauve moved, putting herself between Jael and Sabrina. "She is only just here. Let her unwind a bit, and you can ask all your questions later."

Mauve started to push Jael away. He didn’t seem very happy about this, but he pulled away albeit reluctantly. "I’ll see you later, Sabrina."

She waved at her, and Sabrina waved back. However, Jael was already pulling her away, leading her down the stairs. They were barely halfway down the stairs when Jael asked an unexpected question.

"Do you trust Sabrina?"

"What?" Mauve was so caught off guard that she almost tripped down the stairs, but Jael was quick to notice and grab onto her.

"Was my question that upsetting?"

"I wouldn’t say upsetting," she replied as she caught her balance. "Just unexpected."

"I see, but you still didn’t answer my question. Do you trust her?"

"Yes," Mauve replied, slightly annoyed. "If my shock wasn’t enough indication. I never expected you’d ask that."

"I just like to be certain," Jael replied.

"I understand. That’s why I am not saying anything more, but Sabrina has proven that she is trustworthy."

Jael hummed in response, though his expression betrayed his skepticism. "Trust is a rare commodity, especially among those connected to the lords. It’s not something I take lightly."

"I know," Mauve replied, her tone softening. "But Sabrina has never given me a reason to doubt her. If anything, she’s always been supportive."

"Supportive doesn’t mean she’s free of ulterior motives," Jael countered, his voice lowering. "The lords play a long game, Mauve, and they’ll use whoever they can to get what they want."

Mauve sighed, her patience wearing thin. "Not everything is a conspiracy, Jael. Sometimes, people just want to care."

Jael stopped walking, turning to face her fully. His hands rested on her shoulders, his gaze intense. "I don’t doubt that Sabrina cares about you," he said. "But my priority is you—and the child. I won’t let anyone jeopardize your safety, even unintentionally."

Mauve softened at his words, though a flicker of defiance remained in her eyes. "I appreciate that, but Sabrina is not a threat. You can’t protect me by keeping everyone at arm’s length."

Jael’s lips pressed into a thin line, but he didn’t argue further. Instead, he stepped aside, gesturing for her to continue down the stairs. "Let’s go. You’ve had enough excitement for one day."

Mauve rolled her eyes but descended the rest of the stairs without comment. She could feel Jael’s watchful presence behind her, a constant reminder of his protectiveness.

When they reached their chambers, Mauve slipped inside and turned to face Jael. "I’ll talk to Sabrina later. She deserves a proper welcome, not your interrogation."

Jael arched a brow. "If she deserves it, I’ll consider it."

Mauve chuckled and shook her head. "You’re impossible."
