The Vampire King's Possession
Chapter 723. The Third Day

Chapter 723: 723. The Third Day

Today was the last day of her bed rest, and Mauve couldn’t wait to be able to walk around again. Kieran had not been very pleased with her after he found out that she had left her room regardless of his instructions. He didn’t speak about it, but he had vehemently repeated that she should remain in bed for the meantime.

The headache didn’t return after the first day, which was a good thing, as Mauve didn’t have to take the herbs again, but it made Mauve wonder if Kieran had given her too much time to rest. The days had dragged on, and by the end of the second day, Mauve had wanted to go against Kieran’s instructions several times, but at last, the final day was here, and it was currently time for the second meal.

She hummed as she walked side by side with Jael towards the dining hall. He gave her an amused look, but Mauve was completely oblivious to it as she kept at the tone.

"What’s got you in such a good mood?" he asked.

"What do you mean?" she asked with a little frown.

"You’re humming," he replied, "and you’re practically skipping."

"Well, I won’t be stuck in your room anymore after tonight. That’s enough for a celebration," she smiled.

"Was my room and my company that bad?" Jael asked.

"What are you talking about?" Mauve asked, lightly hitting Jael. "And after the first day, you left me to myself."

"I already apologized," he said.

She narrowed her eyes at him, then turned away. She had not been completely bored, but being stuck in a room still made her quite antsy. Mill had kept her company for most of the time, and Mauve had used the time to knit as much as she could. She still had some learning to do, but she was certainly making progress.

"Still doesn’t change what happened," she whispered.

Jael started to say something, but his words were cut short as they arrived at the dining hall. Only a few lords remained, with most of them leaving the castle the day before. The Garths had left right after the first meal. Sabrina had been reluctant to leave, but there was no way she would stay behind while her family left. The Levatons, however, had left the castle without a word the night before. Most lords also left around the same time. The only lords left were the ones who were at the castle originally for the Palers operation, Lord Kieran, Lady Marceline, and her mate, Alaric.

Mauve sat across from Louis. She had barely seen him in the past couple of days. She had tried to ask Jael if anything was wrong, but Jael didn’t want to talk about Louis, and she didn’t push it. It was pretty clear the relationship between them was even more strained, and she didn’t like that this time she was at the center of it.

However, both of them shared equal blame, and she couldn’t help but squint her eyes at Jael for wanting to completely fault Louis for it. Louis, on the other hand, didn’t even look bothered about the issue, but she could tell something else was up; she just couldn’t quite put her finger on it.

Catching her stare, Louis wiggled his brows, and Mauve couldn’t help the giggle that escaped her lips. Jael turned to look at her with a question in his eyes, and she smiled at him but that was not enough to stop the glare he sent Louis’s way when he realized the cause of her giggle.

The dinner was mostly quiet, and only a few words were exchanged. It felt a bit odd, as Mauve was almost used to the rowdiness that would sometimes fill the hall. However, it was nice to have everything back to the usual. Mauve ate heartily, enjoying every bit of her meal.

When the last meal was finally over, Mauve made her way back to Jael’s room. Kieran promised to stay as long as he could; however, Mauve doubted that would be very long as she knew he didn’t like staying away from his estate which was the complete opposite of Louis. However, she had to admit Louis had a good enough read to not go there. Nobody would want to live in a house where their parents were killed.

Mauve got into bed, but she knew she wouldn’t be falling asleep anytime soon. She had spent most of her day doing nothing but sleeping, resting, and the like; she had enough energy to hike a mountain. She picked up the yarn and figured she could get some work done before she fell asleep.

"What are you doing?" Jael asked.

"You know," she whispered.

"You’ve done that all day," Jael said in horror.

"No, I haven’t," Mauve countered.

"Yes, you have," he said and tried to take it from her hands, but Mauve moved it out of his reach. Of course, it didn’t make any difference, and he got it out of her hand in no time.

"Jael," she whined.

"You can continue after you wake up. For now, you need to go to sleep."

"I have been asleep all day," she whined.

"Maybe," he said, "but it’s the last day. By tomorrow, you can leave your room and do whatever you want."

Mauve groaned. "I want to go on a walk around the castle walls," she stated.

Jael frowned but then sighed. "Would you go to sleep then?" he asked.

"I will," she replied.

"Alright," he reluctantly agreed.

Mauve grinned and jumped on him. "I will go to sleep now."

Jael didn’t look very happy about agreeing, but he was willing to let go of it, and he didn’t discuss the topic further.

Mauve traced her fingers on Jael. She had a lot on her mind, but unfortunately, they weren’t things she could talk about with Jael. He would most likely discourage her and tell her not to worry about them.

"Not sleepy?" he asked after some time.

"I told you I slept more than enough earlier."

"I know a way to make you fall asleep fast eno—" Mauve covered Jael’s mouth with her palms.

"Don’t worry, I will fall asleep myself," Mauve said. He chuckled and hugged her tighter.
