Chapter 719: 719. Better Tasting Brews
Mauve accepted the drink Kieran offered her. She scrunched up her nose. There was really no end to the nasty drinks she would have to take. She closed her eyes and gulped it all down. It was bitter, of course—she had expected nothing less, but it still caught her off guard.
She returned the cup, and Mill accepted it. Mauve still scrunched her face. "Don’t you make better-tasting brews, Lord Kieran?"
"I’d rather not make brews at all," he stated, and Mauve sealed whatever complaints she had. "If you don’t feel any better before the night is over, let me know. You’ll still have to drink that two more times. I’ll get them ready after each meal for you."
Mauve nodded, and Kieran excused himself, leaving Mill behind. "Would you like to remain in bed? I can bring your meal to you."
"No," Mauve stated immediately. "Help me get ready."
Jael shot her a glare. "No, you don’t."
"Jael, it’s the only time I can leave the room for the next couple of days. I’m not going to sit this one out."
Jael sighed. "I’ll go with you."
It was a statement, but Mauve could hear the question in his voice. She could clearly remember forbidding him from going to the dining hall with her. Did he think that still stood?
"Yes, of course," she said with a bright smile.
Mauve didn’t miss the relief in Jael’s eyes. She slowly got out of bed. Her head was still in terrible shape, and she knew she should rest, but Mauve wanted to experience firsthand the aftermath of the party and how the lords felt about it.
She opted for something simple, something easy to move in. When Jael barged into her room, as he usually would, she was ready. She took the hand he offered, and together they walked out of the room.
The dining hall was surprisingly emptier than Mauve had expected. It was no surprise that Lady Marceline and Lord Alaric weren’t in the hall. Considering how much energy the lord had to expel in the past couple of days, he must be exhausted, and Lady Marceline rarely left her mate alone.
Lady Jevera was missing from the dining hall too. Her father was in attendance, and Mauve noticed that Damon was also nowhere to be found. The Garth family were in the hall, and so were the Drusile and Phelan families. Mauve also didn’t miss the look Mill’s father shot at her, but frankly, she was completely unbothered.
Louis was also missing. She stared at Kieran with a question in her eyes, but the lord didn’t look like he had any idea. Mauve didn’t think too much about it. There was no rule that he had to be at the dining hall at all meals, and she had also missed a couple herself. She was sure he was just resting.
Conversations were minimal, and Sabrina did try to strike up a few conversations with her, but Mauve could barely keep up—not with the headache she had. Sabrina seemed to notice something was wrong, as she stopped trying.
Mauve just listened to the clank of the cutlery as she ate. She tried to listen to the conversations, but it was a little hard to do so. When the meal was over, Mauve couldn’t help but rush back to the room. She wondered if she should have taken Jael’s offer and eaten her meals in the bedroom. She half expected Jael to tell her he told her so, but all he did was gently help her back into his room and get her into bed. He sat down and held her hand.
"You know you don’t have to do anything, right? I can take care of everything."
Mauve simply nodded. There was no way she could tell Jael that she couldn’t take a backseat anymore. He wouldn’t understand, and it wasn’t too much for her to handle, it was just a slightly inconvenient time. "I know," she mumbled.
"What did you want to ask me about?" Jael asked.
"Later," Mauve said. "My head hurts too much to hold a conversation."
Jael nodded. "I will let you get some sleep."
Mauve smiled, but Jael didn’t leave immediately. He stayed with her until she dozed off, which didn’t take long. Sleep was the only escape from the blinding headache she had. When Mauve woke up, her headache was gone, and Mill was in the room with her.
"My lady," Mill said with a soft smile. "How do you feel?" she asked.
"Better," she said and lifted her head. Mauve frowned as she met Mill’s eyes. She hadn’t noticed before, but something felt different.
"What’s wrong?" Mill asked, noting the change in Mauve’s expression.
"Did something happen?" she asked.
"While you were asleep? Not really," Mill replied.
"No, to you."
"To me?" Mill asked and averted her eyes. "No, nothing. I’ll bring your meal."
With that, she was gone before Mauve could say anything in reply. She frowned. Was she reading too much into Mill’s expression? When Mill returned with her food, Mauve thought about asking again, but Mill quickly excused herself.
"The Primus said to let him know once you wake up. I’ll do that right now."
Mauve simply nodded as Mill left the room. She didn’t need to know. She had just been concerned. She hoped it didn’t have anything to do with family, but it was hard to tell. She still couldn’t guess if what had happened was good or bad. She was still thinking about it when Jael opened the door.
"Mauve," he said and walked to the bed. "How do you feel?" he asked.
"Famished," she replied as she ate.
"I meant the headache," he replied.
"I know," she smiled at him, and he ruffled her hair. Mauve smacked his hand off and clutched his hand as if in severe pain.
"Mill said she would return with the herbs."
"Okay," Mauve mumbled.
"You don’t sound very happy."
"Nobody is happy about taking drugs, Jael," Mauve replied.
"I know," he said and moved to the bed. He dropped down on it and stared at her as she ate.
"What?" she asked with a frown.
"Nothing," he shrugged.
"I can tell something is up," she responded.
