The Vampire King's Possession -
Chapter 710. Open Your Hearts
Chapter 710: 710. Open Your Hearts
"Have I not proven myself enough? Or do you all intend to keep holding on to the fact that I didn’t ascend the throne until a decade after my parents’ deaths?" Jael paused dramatically as he scanned the crowd.
"I have only been on the throne for no more than a year, and in that time, we have made more progress than in decades. You complain about giving up keeping humans as slaves and now drinking blood from bags, but we have more blood now than we have ever had. They are also definitely easier to transport than humans. You can travel with as many bags as you want, never worrying. Vampires can be saved from Palers’ attacks faster. Not to mention the research and results Lord Kieran has done in the past months. I don’t think your complaints are fair, Lord Phelan and your accusation is baseless. Not a day goes by that I don’t try to make our lives a little easier."
It took a second for the lords to react to Jael’s words. Whispers floated through the hall. Suddenly, Lord Drusile stood up.
"Lord Phelan did go too far by questioning your loyalty, Sire." He paused and turned to Phelan, who immediately looked ashamed.
"Yes," the lord admitted. "Please pardon this one for misspeaking, Sire."
Jael didn’t acknowledge Phelan’s words. Instead, he kept his gaze glued to Drusile. The lord realized Jael wanted him to keep speaking, so he resumed.
"However, it doesn’t change the fact that the Primus’ mate is a human, which is very far from what vampires stand for. A human mate, that is unheard of."
"Lord Drusile, do you say my marking is false? You can tell, can you not?"
"That isn’t the only requirement needed. She is human; that is more than enough to disqualify her."
"Disqualify?" Jael chuckled. "This isn’t some competition. I marked her."
"I am sure there is some mist—"
"That’s enough, Lord Drusile."
Mauve couldn’t hold back her shock. Lord Garth was standing to his feet and he had just scolded Lord Drusile. Did Sabrina manage to convince her father?
"Father," Sabrina whispered.
"The Primus has been kind enough to hear us out, but we all know there is nothing that can be done now. You, out of all of us, should know that. To call that a mistake is not only insulting to the Primus but to your mate, Drusile. You would know, wouldn’t you?"
Lord Drusile flinched at Lord Garth’s accusation. "I have never heard of a human getting marked before."
"It doesn’t make it false, and you understand how important a mate is to a vampire. Once chosen, this cannot change until after death, and most times even death doesn’t change this, especially if it was a marked mate." At the end of his statement, he glanced at Levaton, and the lord shuffled in his seat.
Lord Drusile didn’t want to back down. "We won’t accept a human—"
"I am not asking for that," Mauve interrupted. "I understand where I stand, and I have no plans to change that. Vampires will always be above humans, isn’t that what you all think? You will never view us as equals, and frankly, it would be foolish of me to think otherwise. I am not some spy placed here to sway the Primus. I want nothing more than for vampires to live in a safe place and get the sufficient blood they need. I know it might be hard to believe, but I will always put vampires first because this is my home now. I know being human disqualifies me, but it pains me that you would think your Primus’ choice is a mistake. Everything Jael has done is to prevent his parents’ end from happening again. If it looks like he has to employ the help of humans, I don’t see anything wrong with that."
Mauve’s heart was beating so fast she was sure it could be heard all over the hall, but she couldn’t back down. She had to let it all out. She wasn’t sure her words would convince them, but it was better than to sit back and do nothing.
"I don’t want us to be at each other’s throats. I don’t want to be a wedge. I just want this to end amicably. I know it’s a hard pill to swallow, but I promise to do everything I can to make this work. I understand your grievances towards me, and some of you have done more than speak about it..." Mauve paused and moved her free hand to her neck. She didn’t really need a moment to recover; rather, she was hoping she could tug on their conscience a bit.
"I don’t blame the crime of one lord on the rest of the lords. I know a lot of you don’t condone this. However, it still happened, and not once. This doesn’t change my mind about vampires regardless of what I had to deal with. I know a lot of you are unhappy, but it can’t be such a terrible deed that you can’t open your hearts a little?"
Mauve turned to look at Jael, and he smiled at her. The corners of her eyes watered, and she turned back to face the lords. "Just a little," she mumbled.
"The Primus has chosen his mate, and there is nothing we can change about it. Marking isn’t something so random. A lot of vampires still haven’t been able to mark their mates. All we can do is accept it. No matter how much we might despise that his mate is human, she is still the Primus’ mate." Lord Levaton’s statement was brief, and when he was done speaking, he dropped back onto his seat.
"I suppose that puts an end to this bickering, Lord Phelan and Drusile," Lady Marceline spoke.
"Bickering?" Lord Phelan turned to her.
"Yes," she stated, unfazed by his dark stare. "There is something far more important to discuss."
"And what could that possibly be?" Lord Drusile asked.
"It is pretty unfortunate you both weren’t here last night and convenient if you ask me."
"What are you implying?" Lord Phelan asked.
"What’s this about?" Lord Drusile asked.
