Chapter 677. Things Change
Chapter 677: 677. Things Change
Jael watched Mauve’s body language, and his jaw tightened. She wasn’t the least bit angry about the disrespect and simply wanted him to be on good terms with people who had no reservations about showing their dislike for her, even though she was his mate. He didn’t like that he had to agree with Danag and Louis. He couldn’t keep acting as though this were normal. He had to make it official—for Mauve.
With her arms around her body, he wrapped her in a bear hug, and Mauve giggled.
"What are you doing?" she asked.
He pulled away and looked down at her. "I won’t get into any trouble," he said and poked her nose.
"Ow," she cried.
"The Lords should be the least of your concern. Right now, focus on this," he lightly touched her stomach, and Mauve nodded.
"Okay," she smiled at him. "You should go. Mill will keep me company."
Jael turned his attention to Mill, who was in the corner. He knew he could trust her to protect Mauve, and recently the girl had barely left her alone in her room. She bowed, and Jael turned around to leave. As much as he would rather remain with Mauve, he had to address the situation.
"Get Lord Levaton," he said to the first servant he ran into. "I’ll be in my study."
"Yes, Sire."
Jael was seated by his desk when he heard a knock. He wasn’t surprised when the Lord walked into the study with his daughter right behind him. Jael leaned back in his seat and watched as the Lord walked closer, bowed lightly, and took a seat. Jevera sauntered into the study in the same manner and sat next to her father.
Jael watched their theatrics with a bland expression on his face. He wasn’t curious about whatever it was they wanted to talk to him about. He just wanted to get this over with.
"My liege," Lord Levaton started, and Jael’s gaze darkened. "I see the rumor is true."
"What rumor?" Jael asked. He wasn’t about to make this easy for them. They were the ones who wanted to confront him; they should be able to bring up the topic.
"You know exactly what we are talking about. You marked the human," Jevera accused.
"Human?" Jael shot her a look. "That’s my mate. You will treat her with respect."
Jevera paled. "You don’t expect us to accept this, do you? Father!" she cried, turning to face her father.
Lord Levaton shifted uncomfortably in his seat as if what he was about to say was quite heavy. "Sire, to mark a human—it’s unheard of. She can’t be your mate."
"Why not?" Jael asked, completely unbothered.
"She’s human!" they both simultaneously said.
"I’ve never heard of any rule that states this," Jael replied. "Besides, there’s no point in arguing this. I have already marked her, and I can’t undo that, nor do I have any plans to. Mauve is my mate. Whether you accept this or not is none of my business."
Jevera looked like she was about to explode. Jael was surprised when she didn’t. Instead, she stood to her feet and stormed out of the study. Lord Levaton watched his daughter leave before turning his attention back to Jael.
"I apologize for her attitude, Sire, but surely you see this is not a situation we can stomach. Your mate shouldn’t be human. My daughter would have been perfect as the mate of the Primus. Not just my daughter, but we have several female vampires who would have made a suitable partner for you."
Jael’s brows lowered. "I understand that the situation is a little unexpected, so I shall ignore your blatant disregard of my marked mate. However, you should know better, Lord Levaton. Aren’t you among the few who marked his mate? And your mate has been dead for so long—why don’t you get another?"
Lord Levaton shot Jael a look that could freeze time. "I understand your point, Sire, but there is no reason to bring her up in this manner."
"I was simply making an example in the hopes that you would get my point of view. Who I have chosen to be my mate can’t change. It is up to you Lords to deal with it. Should you refuse, I am more than willing to st—"
Louis burst into the room. "Lord Levaton," he called with exaggerated pretense. "I didn’t think you’d be here. I saw your daughter and assumed you had left too."
Lord Levaton stood abruptly. "I was just leaving," he mumbled.
"Oh, don’t leave on my behalf. I can always come back."
"No need for that," Jael said. "I am sure we are done here. You can stay in my home for as long as you need, but I won’t condone disrespect to my mate."
Lord Levaton did not reply to this. Instead, he simply nodded and bowed before walking to the door. The door shut before Jael spoke again.
"Were you eavesdropping by the door?" he asked Louis.
"Eavesdropping? That’s a little far-fetched and an accusation. I was simply close by in case you needed my presence, and by the looks of things, I was right. Just what are you about to go out spouting?"
"I simply told the truth. What was wrong with that?" Jael asked.
"Everything. You do not, under any circumstances, tell anyone you’re stepping down as the Primus. It’s your birthright. You’re the rightful Primus, and nothing can change that—not even having a human as a mate. Things change. The Lords would just have to deal with that."
"What?" Louis asked when Jael didn’t say anything, just stared at him.
"Nothing," Jael said and turned away.
"Your expression said otherwise," Louis said with a frown.
"No, it didn’t," Jael said, looking at his desk. "Now leave. I have to write letters of invitation to the Lords."
"What?" Louis asked, wide-eyed as he walked closer. "Are you messing with me?"
"Would you stop being so dramatic?" Jael glared at him. "Leave and send in Erick on your way out."
"Leave? You must be out of your mind. You know there is no way I am leaving when you just said that. What invitations?"
