Chapter 645. Comfirmation
Chapter 645: 645. Comfirmation
"Did you notice anything?" Louis asked after a few moments of silence.
"I think so," Mauve mumbled.
"What?" he asked, his voice closer.
She turned her head to look at him, her expression shifting from horror to confusion. "At least three of the books are missing."
"The others aren’t?" he asked.
"I’m not sure, but I’m pretty sure these three books," she pointed to three different sections on the shelf, "don’t belong here."
"They should be in here somewhere," Louis said, glancing around. "Do you think you could find them?"
Mauve’s eyes widened as she did a little spin. "Find them? Have you seen the library?" she asked.
"That’s the only way we can be sure something did happen," he said.
"I think we already have enough proof," Mauve replied. She couldn’t imagine how long it would take them to find these books. The library was massive, and each shelf was stacked with books.
"Remember, we still have to find the missing spell books," he said.
"This is all your fault," she said with a loud sigh.
"Perhaps," he said.
"Perhaps!" she yelled out in horror.
"I’m not denying it, but it is good news, don’t you think?" He grinned at her, his eyes brimming with excitement. "It definitely means the spells worked and you can use magic. The last time wasn’t a fluke."
"I suppose you’re right," she said, turning her gaze back to the shelf.
"You don’t sound as excited," he said with a frown.
"That’s not the case. I’m just slightly annoyed by this mess, and it is something we have to figure out ourselves. Knowing you, you won’t let me read out of the spells until all the books are found. That’s why I am slightly ticked off."
"That’s not true. Currently, we can’t use this book anymore as I don’t know what spell might have caused this to happen, and it is better to be safe," he replied.
"Thank goodness it just shuffled the books and nothing more."
"You are right about that," he replied, his voice sounding distant. "It could have gone horribly wrong."
"Wow, look at you willing to admit to your faults." Mauve grinned.
"I don’t think I have ever been hesitant about that. Anyway, finding the spell book is more important. Check for them around this section and I shall check the higher areas."
Mauve nodded and watched Louis leave before turning her attention to the shelf. She scanned through the first one as quickly as she could without missing anything but came up short. She went through the shelves until she was sure she didn’t miss anything.
"Found anything yet?" she asked Louis as she moved to the second section.
"No."
She groaned out her frustration and started for the second section. Barely halfway through the line, she found something. "Louis!" she screeched. "I think I found something."
He sped to her side, reaching her in seconds. "Is this not the original spell book?" she asked, pointing to the book sticking out oddly in the corner.
"Yes," he said, pulling it out. "How did you recognize it without pulling it out to check?"
He flipped it open and scanned through the pages. "Nothing is missing," he mumbled. "Then the rest of the books we are looking for should be right here."
"I think so too. Did you find anything in your section?" she asked.
"Not yet!"
"This is great news, isn’t it?" Mauve grinned at him.
"Yeah, you could say that."
"Would you try to sound less bored?" she asked.
"That’s my li—" Louis jerked his head toward the library doors as they were immediately thrown open.
Mauve turned her head too but they were covered by the shelves to get a glimpse of who had walked into the library and what they wanted. Almost no one came in here. She knew Jael wouldn’t leave the room, so it was definitely someone else.
"Mauve," Mill called out. "Where are you?"
"Mill," she whispered to Louis. "I am right here!" she called out loud and started heading to the open space.
Louis didn’t follow her immediately, and she figured he wanted to keep the book before joining her. She rushed out and met the vampire by the desks section.
"Mill," Mauve called, and Mill rushed towards her. "What happened?"
"Sorry to interrupt," she said, "but the Primus would like you to return to your room now."
"He couldn’t even give you a couple of hours," Louis said, popping out from behind the corner.
"Lord Louis," Mill cried and bowed quickly. "I didn’t know you were here," she whispered.
"That’s not a problem," he said. "Looks like you have to go," he said to Mauve.
"Unfortunately," she whispered.
"That’s annoying. There is no way I would be able to find the books by myself," he replied.
"Mill could help you," Mauve gladly announced.
Louis turned his gaze to her. "I highly doubt that."
"Help with what exactly?" Mill asked, looking from Mauve to Louis with confusion clearly written on her face.
"Some books. I seemed to have placed them wrongly and, unfortunately, I can’t remember exactly where. Mauve was helping me look for them."
Mauve tried not to act impressed with the way he effortlessly lied. There was no way she would have been able to come up with the excuse on the spot. It wasn’t very believable, but it would help.
"Oh," Mill said, glancing at Louis but not holding his gaze. "I don’t know if I would be much help with that. I barely spend time in the library," she mumbled.
"It won’t be that hard," Mauve interjected. "He will describe the book to you and tell you the names. That should help with your search, right?"
"Right," Louis said. "You don’t have to help if you don’t want to. It would be annoying, but I am sure I can find them myself."
"I don’t mind helping if I can," Mill replied. "But first, I need to take Mauve back to the Primus. He had asked that I bring her myself."
"Of course, take your time. I will be checking the books." He waved at them and started walking away.
Mill nodded to his back before leading Mauve to the door. She pulled it open and held it until Mauve went out through the doors. They mostly walked in silence until Mauve got to the door of her room. Mill knocked once and then twice before turning the handle and pushing the door open.
Mauve immediately saw that Jael was on the bed, and the scowl on his face indicated he wasn’t in a very good mood. She took a step into the room and Mill did the same, but she didn’t go past the door.
"I have brought her, Sire," Mill announced.
Mauve thought it was absolutely unnecessary; Jael could clearly see her, but even though his blue eyes were locked with her brown ones, he still wasn’t saying anything to her.
"I see. That would be all, Mill."
Mill bowed and then carefully retreated out of the room while Mauve ventured closer to the bed. Jael was sitting on it with the cover sheet all the way to his legs. His hair was still over his face, and the burns were visible.
"You called for me?" she asked as she got close enough. She sat on the edge of the bed as she stared closely at him.
"You sure took your time," he spat out.
Mauve studied his face. Was he angry? "I had to help Louis search for some books. But you said you were fine with me stepping out," she said.
"It doesn’t mean you should stay out as long as possible," he replied.
"Now you know how I feel," Mauve said without thinking about it.
Jael froze for a second and Mauve regretted her words. She didn’t say it with malice or any bad intention, but she couldn’t be sure that Jael wouldn’t take it that way.
"I didn’t mean it in a mean manner," she tried to explain.
"I know," he replied. "Come here," he said and stretched out his hands. She climbed onto the bed and into his lap, settling on his legs as she tried to make herself comfortable.
"I would definitely do something about that once I am all healed up," he mumbled.
"Really?" she asked, raising her head to look at his face.
"Yeah," he replied.
"You don’t have to, really. I am not complaining. As long as I can see you sometimes, I am fine with that."
"You should be more greedy," he whispered.
"I already have you. What more could I possibly want?" Mauve shrugged as she chuckled.
"You do have me," he remarked.
She laid into his arms and felt him bury his nose in her hair. "Jael," she suddenly called.
"Yeah," he replied.
"Why won’t you leave the room? The burns aren’t that bad. I am sure no one would have issues with you appearing at the table."
