Chapter 643: 643. Romantic?

Mauve woke up before the sun had set, finding Jael still asleep. Thankfully, there was still enough light to watch his face, the candlelight wasn’t dead yet. She doubted he would appreciate that, but she knew she would stare at him regardless.

She would be lying if she said she didn’t miss his face. Jael was indeed handsome, and aside from his hair and body, his face was definitely one of her favorite things about his appearance. Mauve shook her head, unable to believe she was thinking about his body when he was in this state.

She still hadn’t seen the extent of the damage from the Paler attack and wanted to ask, but she didn’t want to make him uncomfortable. She could always ask him to show her later.

"I can’t pretend I’m sleeping if you keep staring at me like that," he said, and Mauve found herself staring right into his blue eyes.

She jumped back. "If you’re awake, say so," she scolded.

"I already told you, I always know when you’re awake. Surely, you don’t think that has changed."

"I thought I might have gotten lucky this time."

Jael poked her nose, and she grabbed it. "It isn’t sunset yet," he said, turning to face her.

"I know, but I woke up and couldn’t sleep," she replied.

"I see. Did you have a bad dream or anything like that?" he asked.

Mauve shook her head and scooted closer to him. "Nothing like that."

He wrapped his arm around her and kissed the top of her hair. "I see."

"Your face is getting so much better," she grinned up at him.

"It’s only been two days. I would need at least a week to see a significant difference."

"That’s still such a short time. Humans take at least three to six months to heal from those kinds of burns," she mumbled.

"True, but this is only taking a week or longer because it’s sunburn. It usually shouldn’t take this long."

"I know," she responded, moving even closer to him.

"Does it hurt?" she asked.

"Nope," he mumbled.

She pulled back and stared at him. "You’re lying, they look painful."

He shook his head. "I’m not. They don’t hurt even a tiny bit. Besides, you’re here to make all my pain go away."

Mauve reddened from the roots of her hair to her feet. "W-what s-sort of response is that?" she asked, hiding her face in his chest. He chuckled and held her to himself.

Mauve dozed off a little and was awakened when Mill came with their breakfast. It didn’t look like Jael wanted to leave her room, and she wanted to ask but held her tongue. She preferred that he wasn’t doing anything to hinder his recovery.

"Jael," Mauve called after they had eaten and Mill had washed her up and dressed her.

"Do you think I can step out of the room for a few minutes? I want to make a stop in the library."

Jael frowned as he turned to look at her. His gaze darkened slightly, and she shuffled on her feet, wondering if she had said something he didn’t want to hear. He didn’t say anything, and Mauve was about to repeat the question, thinking he might not have heard her.

"I’m not holding you hostage. You can go wherever you want," he finally said.

"I don’t want to leave you alone, and it doesn’t look like you want to leave the room just yet," Mauve replied, trying to explain her reason for asking.

"No, I don’t." The way he said it told Mauve he didn’t want to discuss the situation further. "I was fine when you left the castle to step outside."

"Jael, you said that was fine," she cried and walked closer to the bed.

"And it is. Don’t get me wrong. I meant you don’t have to worry about leaving me in the room. I’m not here because I don’t want you to leave. I’m here because, even though I’d rather be alone in my room, I want to spend time in your company."

Mauve’s eyes widened, and she threw herself on him. He caught her easily. "You’re quite the romantic, you know," she grinned up at him.

"Am I?" He stared at her intensely. "That’s the logical part of me; the other wants to tie you to the bed."

Mauve felt the smile on her face shrink, and her eyes widened slightly. Jael smirked at her reaction. "You should go," he said before she could come up with a reply. "I will most likely have a meeting with Danag or Damon soon enough. Since I have no intention of leaving the room, they would have to come to me."

Mauve swallowed and pulled away from him, unable to shake his words from her mind. "Okay," she said and got out of bed.

"Don’t be long," he smiled. "I’m willing to let you go but it doesn’t mean I wouldn’t prefer it if you were here."

"I know," Mauve mumbled and started for the door, waving slightly. She wasn’t scared or horrified, and that was the most concerning part. She didn’t like the fact that her mind was conjuring several things he could do to her while she was tied up. It must be the fact that she was cooped up with Jael. Her mind was getting corrupted.

Mauve appeared in front of the library door and was shocked when it suddenly opened. She wasn’t sure who looked more surprised, her or Louis. "What are you doing here?" he asked with a slight frown. "And why are you so flushed?"

"What?" she asked, her voice a little higher than normal. "Probably because I didn’t expect you to be standing by the door!"

"If you’re yelling at me, I will take that as a good sign. How are you?" he asked, his voice softening as he took a step back to let her into the study.

"Huh? I thought you didn’t want to see me," she said as she reluctantly stepped into the library.
