Chapter 629. Twin Axes
Chapter 629: 629. Twin Axes
"Quite the opposite. I do think someone is due for a beating," he glanced down. "If you’re fine with it, I guess there’s nothing holding me back." He took a step back from Mauve and cracked his knuckles.
Louis laughed, "I guess the fact that I broke your cheek and whooped your ass last time still burns?"
"Don’t you think your memory is a little twisted? We both know you’ve never won a fight against me. Enough talk, step in the ring."
Mauve looked from one person to the other. Jael looked mad, whereas Louis looked as though he was having fun. She was sure his cocky attitude was getting to Jael.
"Oh, we won’t be using our hands," Louis smirked. "We’ll be using axes."
"Are you sure that’s a good idea? I don’t want to cut off your head by mistake. I won’t miss you, but Kieran is your brother and he wouldn’t like you dead."
Louis laughed, "You couldn’t cut it off even if you tried. When was the last time you used an ax? Was it ten years ago? Do you even know how to swing it? Just so you know, I haven’t stopped," Louis responded.
"What were you doing with an ax? Chasing Palers? I highly doubt that you had the time while running around. Just because I don’t use axes doesn’t mean I’m no good at it. If you were around, you would know."
"You’re never going to let that go, are you?" Louis asked as they stared each other down.
Jael shrugged, "What can I say? I’m the type that holds grudges. This isn’t like last time. You’ve been getting on my nerves lately, so I might go a little crazy!"
"You just have a lot to say, don’t you? How about you show all that in the ring?" Louis smirked again, completely unbothered by Jael’s words.
"Danag!" Jael yelled out. "Get me any ax!"
"As you wish, Sire!" Danag responded.
"Completely out of the question," Louis interrupted. "I am going to be using my ax. The last thing I want to hear after my victory is that I only won because you used a random ax."
"Victory?" Jael laughed. "Aren’t you being a little too confident? I am not using that ax!" Jael stated stubbornly.
"You’re not?" Louis smirked. "Well then, I guess this match has been decided."
Jael took a step forward, squaring up to Louis who didn’t take a step back. "I don’t need that to defeat you."
"Humor me," Louis replied. "Your pride isn’t the only one at stake here. Using the wrong weapon would get you in trouble. I’ve only ever lost to you and each time you were in peak mode. Don’t underestimate me, Jael!"
Louis’s eyes flickered a little and his expression changed from cocky to serious. He was angry. He wanted a serious fight, and Jael was being lackadaisical and insulting. Though it seemed as though Jael was angry, Louis knew Jael wasn’t taking him seriously.
"Fine," Jael said and took a step back. "You will regret this."
"Perhaps," Louis smiled, his smug expression back. "But at least I’ll be able to say I fought the Primus while he was serious."
"Whatever," Jael said and turned to Danag who was closer to the party now. "Get me my axe."
"And mine!" Louis added.
Danag couldn’t hide his smile as he bowed his head, raised it, and took off the field, heading for the castle. He was fast as he ran and Mauve’s eyes could barely keep up.
"You can back out now," Jael said. "I am not going to hold back."
"I would prefer it if you didn’t," Louis replied, looking ahead.
Danag returned in less than five minutes. He wasn’t alone; a guard was right behind him, each of them holding an ax. Mauve squinted her eyes as she tried to get a proper look. They both stopped in front of Jael and Louis and took a bow.
Jael took the ax from Danag and, without looking at it, gestured for Mauve to come closer. She moved without any hesitation and walked closer to him.
"You might not be able to see it clearly enough," he whispered as she got close enough, "but you can at least feel it."
Mauve nodded and peered at what he held. It was long; she would have sworn it was almost half her height. It was a double-headed ax, and the stones driven into it shone at her.
She ran her fingers over it, enjoying the feel of the cold metal. Somehow, it reminded her of Jael. "It’s magnificent," she whispered and looked up at him. "Can I hold it?"
Jael frowned, "It’s heavier than you think," he said.
"It can’t be that heavy," she responded.
"It’s really heavy," he reiterated.
"You’re carrying it like it weighs nothing," she mumbled, annoyed that he was mocking her strength.
"I carry you like you weigh nothing," he replied.
Mauve blushed; every vampire here must have heard him. "I weigh more than Inferno," she stated stubbornly.
"Yes, you do," he gently responded, a hint of a smile on his lips.
"Let me," she stretched out her hands.
"Of course," he said and gently placed the length of the ax on her open palm but he held onto the head.
Mauve’s hand sfell downward at the weight. She had anticipated some weight and had braced herself for it, but the ax was heavy and this was just the handle. She couldn’t imagine what the head weighed.
"See," he grinned. "I told you it was heavy."
"It is," she reluctantly admitted and pulled her hands to the side. He grinned at her again as if happy he had been able to prove his point.
She heard a swish sound and turned her head in Louis’s direction. He was holding his ax by the neck and staring at it. The ax had a similar design to Jael’s. Even in the dark, she could easily see this. It was a double-headed ax but the handle seemed a little shorter.
"Want a closer look?" Louis offered, smiling at her.
"No!" Jael said and stood between them. "Go ahead," he ordered. "Danag, watch Mauve."
