The Vampire King's Possession
Chapter 518. Vae

Chapter 518: 518. Vae

Mauve looked left and right as she approached the doors. Louis had told her it was safe to walk in and she was going with Mill while he would stand watch.

The sound of the door opening sounded so loud that she feared everyone could hear them and that at any minute Lord Seraphino’s guards would come running.

She didn’t know what Louis had said to make them leave but they had obeyed immediately scrambling in different directions.

The door opened to reveal a dark room and Mauve held her breath. She didn’t know what to expect. They weren’t even sure Vae was in there but this was a very good chance she was.

She took a step forward and the smell of dried blood reached her nose. She didn’t even think, she bolted into the dark space, not knowing what direction Vae might be in.

"Mauve, don’t run," Mill called out as she closed the door. Making the dark room even darker.

"Princess," a soft voice called.

"Vae!" Mauve cried and spun in what she hoped was the direction the Vae’s voice was coming from.

"No," Mill said. "A little more to your left."

Mauve adjusted according to Mill’s instructions and her legs bumped into something.

She felt hands go up her legs and hold it and Mauve dropped to her knees wrapping her arms around Vae.

"Vae!" She cried. "I thought I’d never see you again."

"Princess," Vae called, sniffling.

Mauve heard a sound and the curtains were thrown open. "I am sorry but I can’t light a lamp. You’d have to cope in the dark."

"Thank you, Mill," Mauve whispered.

Mill shrugged and approached them.

"You look great, Princess," Vae said and lifted her hands to Mauve’s face but quickly brought it down immediately.

Vae smiled and Mauve thought she had lost a tooth or it was the way the light reflected. She couldn’t really tell.

Her eyes watered and she grabbed Vae’s hands. "Don’t worry, Jael will get you out of this mess."

"The Vampire King?" Vae asked, her voice sounded coarse.

"Yes."

"I highly doubt that. I chose this. You don’t have to go out of your way for me." Her voice shook slightly.

"What do you mean?"

Vae shook her head, "You don’t need to stick out your head for me. I don’t know what Seraphino wants to do with me but even I can tell it’s not good. He keeps mumbling things about you and Vampire King."

"All the more reason why we need to get you away from him as fast as possible. You didn’t choose any of this. King Evan is just a terrible ruler, I can’t believe he would send you off like this when there is a treaty."

"It was what I wanted."

"What do you mean? Why?" Mauve frowned.

Vae sighed, "In exchange for helping my sick mother," she responded.

Mauve’s eyes widened. "Malcolm agreed to that."

"The crown prince?"

Mauve nodded.

"I don’t know, I never met with him but I did manage to get an audience with the King after pleading my cause through the Queen. He agreed to let the doctors treat my mother but there was no guarantee that she would get better. However, I was to pay my gratitude in kind. I didn’t know what it would be and I agreed. The next day, I was sent off in a carriage and a bunch of vampires took me. I arrived in his castle and I’ve been there for a little over two weeks."

"What about your mother?" Mauve asked.

"I don’t know by the time I left, there was nothing more I could do for her but I couldn’t let her die."

Vae hiccuped at the end of her words. Mauve wished she could get a proper look at Vae’s face but it was better that she couldn’t.

She knew she wouldn’t like what she would see. She had already gotten glimpses and each time, they had made her sick to her stomach.

She was angry at King Evan but more at her brother, how could he let such a thing happen to Vae after he promised he would help?

Surely, he must have known she wouldn’t like this. The only thing she could hope for was that he wasn’t aware.

As Vae had said, she had spoken directly to the King, not Malcolm. He was probably unaware.

"I tried to look for you," she heard herself say. "I heard about your mother but nobody could tell me where you were. I even asked Malcolm to help and he still couldn’t find you."

"You came back?" Vae asked with wide eyes.

"Briefly, I only just returned." It has been more than two months now but that wasn’t important.

"You did. I didn’t know."

"I figured. When I heard your mother was sick, I wanted to help you in whatever way I could."

"Thank you," Vae whispered.

"It’s the little I can do," Mauve said.

"No, it’s not. I left without saying goodbye, I left you here all alone. You shouldn’t be this nice to me."

"It was my cross to carry in the first place and somehow I dragged you into it but you helped me regardless of how you felt about it. I was devastated when I heard you were gone but unlike me, you were pulled away from your family and loved ones. I hold no resentment towards you for leaving, I just wished you’d have told me."

Vae bent her head and covered her face. "I know and I am sorry. I am so sorry, for leaving and for not letting you know but there was no way I would have been able to tell you. I couldn’t face you."

"I forgive you and I am sorry that your engagement was called off because of me. If you don’t come with me you’ll be married now."

"What? No, it’s not. I was only gone for two months. He obviously wanted a reason to end the engagement. I am glad he got it."

Mauve’s eyes brightened. She had been worried that Vae blamed her for it but it was relieving to find out she didn’t.

"We have to go," Mill suddenly said.

Mauve grabbed Vae’s hand and brought it to her chest. "We will get you out of this mess, I promise."

Vae nodded, "Thank you."

Mauve nodded and stood to her feet.

"Thank you," Vae said to Mill. "You have my thanks."

"Worry about yourself, as you can see Mauve is doing quite well," Mill said.

"Yes, she is. Thank you."

Mill simply nodded and led Mauve out the doors.
