Chapter 502. Songbirds
Chapter 502: 502. Songbirds
It took a while for Jael to speak after Louis left and when he did, his words didn’t come as a surprise. It was totally the kind of thing he would say.
"You shouldn’t care about Marceline and you certainly shouldn’t care about what she thinks about you. Her opinion should hold water to you."
Jael looked at Mauve as he spoke, his eyes scanned her face as though he was looking for something.
"Why not?" Mauve asked, looking away from his piercing gaze. His blue eyes stared deep into her soul. "She’s your aunt."
"She’s not," he said stubbornly.
"I know she’s not your aunt biologically, but she must have been pretty close to your family," she replied.
When he didn’t respond, she raised her gaze to his face. "Did something happen between you two?"
Jael sighed and looked away from her. "It’s not what you think. We didn’t have a great relationship when my parents were alive either."
"Why not?" She asked, genuinely curious.
"She’s demanding and my mother would often cater to her whims. It didn’t matter what it was, mother treated her like a spoiled child."
"You hated that?" Mauve asked.
She could definitely see Jael as a jealous child, but not like that trait has completely diminished. She could see traces of it now and then but Mauve knew this was a good sign.
"No, it never really bothered me. Not until their deaths."
Mauve breath caught in her throat. That was certainly not what she had expected to hear. Jael had only spoken about his parents’ death once.
"I know it’s not her fault," he added. "However, if she hadn’t insisted they come see her, she would still be alive today."
Mauve nodded and leaned into him, she didn’t know what to say to this. It hurts to lose one’s parents. She knew how she felt when her mother died.
She could definitely see why he blamed her. It was easy to deal with if he had someone to blame for something he couldn’t change.
Whereas the only person she could blame was herself. She would have liked to blame her father but she couldn’t do that because her mother was already terribly sick.
Maybe she wouldn’t have died as early as she did if she didn’t have to cater to a child who couldn’t do anything for themselves.
"I’m sorry," she whispered.
He scoffed, "I keep telling you, it is not your place to apologize."
"I know but I want to try to relieve your pain in any way that I can."
"Me too," he whispered.
She blinked as she looked up at him. "My mother, yeah." She sighed and folded her arms.
"I heard how she died. I should have brought it up before now but you never mentioned it so I wasn’t sure you wanted to talk about it."
"I don’t have issues talking about my mother," she whispered. "I guess that the fact that I had to keep her a secret for most of my life makes it a bit hard to bring her up or maybe it’s because I can barely remember anything about her. I don’t even remember her face." Mauve brought her hands to her mouth. She took a deep breath as she tried to calm down her emotions.
"That happens," he mumbled.
"Yeah, I guess. It was a long time ago and after crying for a few days I got numb about it. Nobody talks about her, you know and it does hurt that the one person that is supposed to remember her doesn’t even remember what she looks like."
Mauve realized that she was rambling but this was something she had always wanted to say but no one would have wanted to listen.
"I don’t think her appearance matters," Jael responded as he stroked her hair trying to calm her down. "It doesn’t. As long as she is always in your heart, that is all that matters."
Mauve chuckled and wiped her eyes. It wasn’t surprising that his words cheered her up.
"What?" Jael asked, sounding confused.
"Nothing, I just wouldn’t expect you to say something like that."
"Ouch!"
"Thank you," she said and touched his arm.
"For wh..."
"Not rejecting me when you found out about her. For the longest time, my mother felt like a stain, you know. My family has an awkward relationship with me because of her. People have an awkward relationship with me because of that but you don’t."
"I want you," he whispered, looking directly into her eyes. "Your background has nothing to do with it."
She smiled and nodded. "I did think it was because you found out that you were looking for a way to chase me off."
"Of course not! I would want you regardless of your roots." The certainty in his voice was like music to her ears.
"Even if I was a turtle?" She asked, trying hard not to smile.
"Why a turtle? Isn’t that a completely different species?"
"Just answer the question," She pouted.
Jael chuckled but quickly straightened his expression but it was still obvious he was trying hard not to laugh.
"Even if you were a turtle, I’d love you regardless."
"What about a worm?" She asked, her voice low.
Jael started to laugh but Mauve looked at him with a serious expression. Swallowing his laugh, he said, "Yes."
"What about me?" He asked.
"What about you?" She responded, her throat dried in her throat.
"Would you want me regardless of what I am?"
"Hmm, I don’t know," she replied, bringing her fingers to her chin as she portrayed an exaggerated appearance of being lost in
thoughts.
"You don’t?" He asked.
Mauve turned her gaze to Jael’s face as he watched her with an intensity in his eyes.
She knew what he wanted here and the urge to say the words made her chest tighten. She wanted to tell him exactly how she felt.
She wanted to tell him that her heart would occasionally leap out of her chest at the sight of him and that she didn’t have butterflies in her stomach, they were birds that wouldn’t stop whistling her love for him.
"Mauve," he called.
"I love you," she whispered. The words felt lighter than she thought they would.
"Mauve," Jael said, wrapping her into his embrace.
"I really do and I know I’d love you regardless of what you are. I mean you’re already a vampire and I love you this much," she chuckled.
"What’s wrong with vampires?" He asked.
"You people are scary," she said without hesitation. "I thought that the very first day I met you. I was terrified and completely swooned. For some reason, I thought it wouldn’t be so bad because you’re handsome."
"You think I am handsome?" He asked and she glared at him.
"I am sure you already know that."
"Maybe," he said and gently kissed her lips, "But I absolutely love it when you tell me."
Mauve giggled, "I think I had already fallen for you before we even became intimate. You were nice to me, you didn’t have to be."
"Are you saying you fall for everyone nice to you?"
"Jael," she scolded and he poked her nose. "That’s why I was completely heartbroken when you chased me off."
He stiffened immediately, it still wasn’t a topic he wanted to talk about but she wanted him to know she held no resentment towards him for it.
"I am sorry," he whispered.
"You’ve apologized enough. To an extent I am glad you did, I don’t think you would have realized your feelings for me if I had stayed."
"You’re right," he responded. "You know from the moment we met, I hated the smell of your fear. It irritated my nose. I couldn’t stand it. When you stopped being scared around me it felt as though I had won. I don’t know how to explain it but it felt really good. When you left, it felt like the opposite of that but worse like you took a part of me and went with it."
Mauve nodded, understanding his words immediately. She had felt the same as though she had left a huge part of her here. The instant she had heard he wanted her to come back, she had wanted to leave everything and return to his side.
"I still didn’t know what it meant then but I am glad I do now. I love you, Mauve, and I and sorry I hurt you but I know I couldn’t be without you."
"Oh," Mauve blinked rapidly as she tried to stop herself from crying but that was almost impossible. "I love you, Jael. I always will."
He wiped the tears from the corner of her eyes and planted a huge kiss on her lips. She wrapped her arms around his neck, kissing him back.
He deepened the kiss as he pried her lips open and sucked on her tongue. Mauve groaned, complying with his demands as she gave him unrestricted access.
