Chapter 425: 425. Only Trying To Help

Mauve couldn’t see what they saw and by the hardened look on Jael’s face, it wasn’t a hoax. Something was happening, something bad enough to have Erick and Louis running.

After a few seconds, there was almost no sign of the both of them. Everything just looked dark. Jael was staring keenly at something but for the life of her, she couldn’t even guess what it was.

"What’s happening?" She asked him unable to take the suspense anymore.

"I think something happened to one of the guards," he whispered, still looking ahead.

He shuffled on his feet and lengthened his neck to see as far as possible.

"Oh no," she exclaimed. "I hope it’s nothing serious."

"I don’t know but he is on the back of another guard. Erick has gotten to them. They are still too far for me to see exactly what’s going on." Jael’s voice sounded distracted as he spoke.

"There’s no problem. You don’t have to tell me exactly what you see." She hoped it wasn’t anything too bad.

"I am sure you don’t want to be in the dark. The worst would be the guard was bitten by a paler and is bleeding out. That’s not good. We still have ways before we reach the castle." His brows dipped some more as his concentration increased.

"Won’t my blood help?" She asked.

Jael tore his gaze from the scene and looked at her with a dark expression. "I understand you’re eager to help but if it’s a serious injury, your blood won’t be enough."

"Still, it could help, right?"

He looked away from her but not before she saw him ground his jaw. "It could but there is no need to take drastic measures when we don’t even know what the issue is."

Mauve nodded even though she could not figure out how she was making any drastic decision.

If she could help out, she would happily do that. At least she would be able to provide the blood needed. It won’t be enough but at least it would help out a little until they got to the castle where he can get enough blood.

He looked down at her when she didn’t say anything in response to his words.

"What?" She asked when their eyes met.

"Thanks," he whispered.

"For what?" She frowned.

"Offering your help," he smiled at her. She noticed the smile didn’t reach his eyes.

She hid her face from view. He didn’t need to make it seem like she had done something so selfless. It was just a bit of blood and of course, she would have offered.

"You don’t have to thank me. As you said we don’t know what’s going on."

"Yeah," he said and looked away from her. "But unless it is absolutely necessary, you won’t have to give blood. I am not that eager to let others know how you taste."

Mauve jerked her head up. Was he refusing because of this? His eyes met hers briefly before he looked away again.

"Erick and Louis are returning," he said before she could come up with a reply.

"They are?" She asked with bright eyes as she tried to see.

"Erick has the injured guard on his back," Jael didn’t look like he believed the words he uttered and then his expression changed.

"Danag!" He called out and instinctively made to take a step forward but somehow stopped himself in time.

"Danag is the injured guard?" She asked with a gasp.

"That’s the only explanation. I don’t see Erick giving a piggyback ride to just anyone."

Mauve’s heart skipped a bit, somehow it had not been as stressful when she didn’t know exactly what guard had been injured but now that she knew, it made it a bit personal.

However, her stand hasn’t changed in fact it has solidified. There was no way she wouldn’t give Danag some of her blood if he needed it and she was sure Jael wouldn’t stop her.

It didn’t take Erick and Louis too long to get to where they stood. She could see them once they got close enough. Louis got to them first while Erick was closely behind them.

"Danag," Jael called as Erick stopped in front of him. "What happened?" He asked.

Mauve squinted her eyes as she tried to see. All she could see was someone on Erick’s back.

She could see Erick’s expression and the strained look in his eyes. He didn’t say a word as he stopped but his intense expression was enough to show just what he was thinking.

"I miscalculated," Danag whispered. "I didn’t think the Paler would attack the carriage now that it was empty."

"You were attacked?" Jael asked.

"Yeah, unfortunately," Danag explained. Mauve thought he looked embarrassed by the situation.

"What happened then?" Jael asked, moving closer. He bent a little as he inspected Danag. Mauve noticed the cloth wrapped around Danag’s leg.

"While I was battling the Paler, I slipped and fell. My left leg broke my fall. Turned out I hit it against a stone and with so much force too. The bone broke on impact."

Mauve gasped, it sounded painful. She was surprised Danag could hold a proper conversation while he was in such excruciating pain.

"Thankfully the guards got to me in time and they helped fight it off before it could bite me or worse," he added. "The problem is I am not healing as fast as I should so my left leg is currently useless. It must be because I haven’t fed properly in a while."

Mauve’s already sad expression became even sadder as she realized this was probably because he was stuck in Greenham because of her.

"You can take my blood," she offered. It was the least she could do.

They all stopped and simultaneously turned to look at her. It was dark but she could still see the look of horror on their faces.

You would think she had just offered to do something despicable. She was only trying to help.
