The Vampire King's Possession -
Chapter 422. Screech
Chapter 422: 422. Screech
"Look at you spitting out orders. What’s your plan now?" Louis asked as the carriage drove off.
"I don’t have one," he said and started walking.
"What do you mean?"
"We just need to get to the castle safely. We are all too tired from the journey. Especially you and Danag. Unless it is absolutely necessary, there is no need to engage. We can go after it some other day. Right now, I need you here with me."
Louis stopped walking and looked at Jael with a shocked expression. Jael paused and turned around.
"What?" Jael asked with annoyance in his gaze.
"Nothing," Louis said and walked past him. "Pick up the pace then. We won’t get to the castle at this rate with you walking like a bloody snail."
Jael narrowed his eyes but he didn’t reply to Louis, instead, he said to her, "Let me know if I’m moving too fast for you."
She nodded, feeling like a child cradled up in his hands. Jael picked up the pace at her response and Mauve winced as a gust of wind hit her.
She hid her face in his chest and tried not to move too much. She wondered how long it would take them to reach the Nolands.
She figured it was bound to take a while even though they had set out earlier than they should have, they were still about halfway through Nolands.
Jael carried her carefully as he ran across, he was so fast she couldn’t even keep track of the surroundings as they were moving faster than her eyes could keep up in the dark.
He ran for a few minutes and then slowed down, stopping behind a rock. Louis appeared next to him, his eyes scanning the area.
"What’s wrong?" Louis asked.
Jael stared out but there was nothing in the direction he was staring at. "Erick is coming," he replied.
"Erick?" Louis frowned.
"He should be too far to get to where we are this quickly if he was intercepting the Paler. Is he alone?"
Jael nodded, "If you look closely, you can see him approaching."
"Yeah, I see him. Your sixth sense will always be a marvel," Louis replied and tapped Jael on his back.
"It’s not a sixth sense," he said and shrugged his hand off."
"Yeah, yeah whatever. Just take the compliment and stop whining."
At this point, Mauve could see Erick. Well not really but she could see a figure approaching them. Suddenly he stopped as if to look for them.
Louis raised his hand and waved. Erick immediately headed for the rock they were standing beside.
"Erick," Jael called. "What are you doing here?"
"Sire," he said, stopping in front of Jael. "I am glad I found you so quickly."
Jael frowned, "What’s wrong?"
"We lost sight of the Paler."
"What?"
"I apologize, it’s partly my fault."
"How do you lose a Paler? It is literally open ground with nothing but a few rocks and trees. Not to mention they’re almost white you could pick them up from a mile away in the dark."
"I know, Sire," he said with his head bent slightly. "I must have underestimated it because of that."
"What else did you find?" Jael’s voice held annoyance and impatience.
"I caught up with Danag but there was no sign of the Paler either. Danag thinks it must have gone ahead and after you, he asked me to try to catch up with you."
"We haven’t seen anything on this end either," Louis explained. "Can you sense anything, Jael?"
"No, and it doesn’t work that way. I don’t think it ran away or it’s after us. I think there might be more than one." Jael walked ahead. "We don’t have time to loiter. Try to keep up, Erick."
"I can keep up just fine," the vampire responded.
Jael started moving again and this time around all Mauve could hear was the sound of her own heart beating and the wind.
It was scary to think that they might run into a Paler, not to mention that a Paler might be after them. She winced a little.
She hated to think that she might be the one to drag them down. If they didn’t have her to worry about, she couldn’t help but think Jael wouldn’t be so concerned if she was with them.
He ran for a while and then he slowed, just as Louis fell in step with him. "Don’t stop running," she heard Jael say.
"Yes, Sire," Louis said. "But if it gets too close. "I will try to draw it away."
Jael opened his mouth to protest but a loud screech erupted from afar. It was unlike anything she had ever heard before.
She didn’t even know Paler made such loud noises. She winced, it was far but it was still ear-piercing.
Jael stopped immediately, rooted to the spot as he turned in the direction the sound was coming from. He wasn’t the only one Louis and Erick weren’t moving either.
"What’s that?" She heard herself ask.
"I don’t know," Jael said, he sounded distracted. "I have never heard it before. We should go. Even I can tell that isn’t good."
She nodded in approval of his words. It was better to leave than to investigate what that was about. They were still in the Nolands which meant they were still at a terrible disadvantage.
"Hang on tight," he whispered to her.
"Okay," she whispered.
"And don’t worry, I won’t let anything happen to you," he looked down as he said those words. She couldn’t really see his face but she was sure he could see hers clearly.
Mauve nodded, she didn’t doubt it for one minute. However, she wished she could do more than just hang on. Still, there was nothing to beat herself about, only vampires could go after Palers.
It was a good thing they didn’t go after humans, they would have been wiped out before they could even see them, let alone attack them.
