Chapter 393. Malcolm Confronts The King

Chapter 393: 393. Malcolm Confronts The King

"Promise," Malcolm responded without hesitation. "Let me speak to Father. I am sure this is just one huge misunderstanding, and we can come to an agreement."

Even as Malcolm said those words, he still had difficulty keeping up with what was happening. However, he didn’t find it hard to believe one bit.

This was the person who didn’t think twice about marrying Mauve off to a vampire—the reason they have to live in terror for as long as he can remember.

Nevertheless, he could understand why she shouldn’t return to the Vampire Regions, but this was his Father they were talking around, and he wasn’t stopping her from leaving for her own good.

He wanted to ask several questions about why she wanted to return, but he could see that now was not the time.

She was still very shaken by what their Father had said to her, and right now, he just wanted to comfort her as best as he could.

He was never really there when she needed him. She had been married off without a second thought, and no one had considered why that was a bad idea.

Looking at her all curled up on the bed with tears in her eyes made him want to give her a big hug and tell her everything was going to be alright, but he knew it would be more awkward than anything else. They didn’t have that kind of relationship.

"If you say so," she said, her smile looked forced.

"I leave you to it. Try to get some rest."

Mauve scoffed, "I have been stuck for a while now. I assure you that’s all I have done."

"I shouldn’t have said that," he returned, taking his hand from her shoulder.

Mauve shrugged, "I know you mean no harm."

He smiled and stood on his feet. She kept her gaze on him. Her big brown eyes stared up at him. His little sister. Seeing her go through so much broke his heart.

She waved him off. Her eyes didn’t hold much hope and tore at him. He closed the door as the guards standing outside the doors bowed to him.

He ignored them and, without hesitation, headed straight for the throne room. His Father should be there at this time of the day. Hopefully, he wasn’t preoccupied, and they could talk about this.

"Crown prince," the guards said as he appeared in front of the throne room.

"Is my father in there?" He asked the one directly in front of him.

"Yes," he answered.

"Alone?"

"I am afraid not, Crown Prince."

"Hmm," Malcolm said. "Open the doors."

"As you wish."

Malcolm walked into the throne room. The vast space made concentrating on anything in particular hard for him.

He looked straight ahead instead and locked eyes with his Father, who raised his head from the paper he held.

"Malcolm," he called with a bright smile. "To what do I owe the honor? You rarely come in here except it’s important. What’s going on?"

"Can I have a word with you?"

Evan Grey frowned, "If this is about Mauve. I am busy. Come back later."

"And if it isn’t?" Malcolm asked with a raised brow.

His Father beamed at him, "I can spare a couple of minutes."

"It is about Mauve, as you have predicted. Take your time. I am willing to wait as long as I need to have this conversation with you."

Evan frowned, "You can do whatever you want, but don’t blame me if you spend most of the afternoon waiting."

"There is no reason why it should take that long."

The throne room wasn’t crowded. There were only about two other people, and one was his advisor. He stood behind the King.

"Take it or leave it," his Father replied, returning his attention to the paper.

Malcolm squinted his eyes, but he had no option. He had to wait for the King to give him an audience.

"As you wish, Father." He bowed.

"Wait outside," he said without looking at Malcolm. "When I am ready, I will send for you.

Malcolm simply nodded and turned around, leaving the way he had just come.

His Father was true to his word. It wasn’t until it was almost time for dinner that he was called into the throne room.

"What is this about, Malcolm?" He asked.

He was seated on the throne while Malcolm stood before him. The King stared at his son with displeasure in his eyes.

"Why did you confine her to her room, Father?" He asked. Malcolm could feel his emotions rising to the surface, and he tried to suppress them.

"Because that’s the best way to keep her safe. The poor child has been brainwashed. Talking about wanting to return to the Vampire Regions, she must be out of her mind."

"You sent her there the first time. Why is it a problem now?"

Evan sneered at his son, "What are you implying?"

"She should be able to leave."

"You approve of this."

"Whether I approve or not is the least important thing here. What’s important is that she wants to return to the person you married her off to. Why are you stopping her from doing that?" The disbelief in his voice was as clear as day.

"Drop the accusatory tone. It’s insulting. This is for her own good, but she’s too delusional to understand."

"She’s not a child, Father. She should be able to decide what’s best for her. Besides, isn’t this what you wanted? Why are you against this now?"

"She can’t return to them, not after what they did to me."

Malcolm frowned. He could immediately tell that this had something to do with Vampires attacking the castle, but punishing Mauve for it was a little too ridiculous.

He didn’t know the full details except his Father had been attacked in his own bed. The Vampires had ruthlessly fed from the servants. The reason was unknown; no matter how often he questioned his Father, he didn’t get any answer.

He had tried asking his mother, but she had simply said his Father would tell him when he was ready.

"Even if she wants to go back?" Malcolm asked.
