The Vampire King's Possession
Chapter 376. Not Engaged

Chapter 376: 376. Not Engaged

"Princess," Maria called as she combed her hair.

"Hmm," Mauve replied absentmindedly.

She had her gaze on the reflection as she stared at what the maid was doing. She didn’t really want her hair tied up or anything, so they had just opted to let her down.

"As to your request, I have gotten some answers."

Mauve snapped out of the trance immediately, "About Vae?" She asked, turning around to look at Maria.

"Yes," the servant said, but her face said she didn’t have good news. "I am afraid I don’t have anything useful. After she left to take care of her mother, no one has heard from her since."

"I see," Mauve said and turned away from the maid to her original position.

She looked at the mirror, and her disappointed expression stared back at her, accompanied by worry and a bit of fear.

"Not even where her house is?" Mauve asked after thinking about the information for a couple of minutes.

"I am afraid not. I asked who I thought would know. I apologize for taking so long and still having something useful."

"What about her fiancé or, better still, her sister?"

"Fiancé?" Maria asked with a frown.

"Yeah, fiancé. Can’t anyone get in touch with them?"

"Oh no, princess. Vae’s engagement was called off," Maria replied.

"What?" Mauve jerked her head so fast, that she could swear she heard a snapping sound.

Her hair made a swishing sound, and she watched Maira take a step back as she got a face full of hair.

Mauve didn’t even register it as she was more interested in the information she had just heard. How was her engagement called off? She was already engaged. There was nothing to call off.

"Yes," Maria said with confidence. "I guess I should have added it when you first asked me about her, but I thought you already knew since it happened so long ago."

"What happened?" Mauve asked impatiently.

She wondered if that had anything to do with the fact that she never heard about the maid. She wondered what could have transpired. She was beyond curious and worried. Somehow, she could tell she would not like what Maria was about to say to her.

"Well, as soon as she returned, she discovered he was about to marry someone else. The jerk!"

"What? Why? When they are already engaged, that doesn’t make any sense."

"Same thing, I thought, but he wasn’t going to take her back because, according to him, he didn’t think she would return. No one returned from the Vampire Regions. According to him, he thought she wouldn’t come back, so he had looked for someone else to get married to."

"What? She was away for only two months. That’s not enough time to think she wasn’t coming back and getting married. That doesn’t sound right any way you look at it."

"We know, and we all told her the same thing. The worst part was he said he had no intention of calling off the second engagement. It was already too late."

"Oh no." Mauve gasped. Her heart broke for Vae; to think that the maid had to go through this made her hurt badly.

"Barely a month later, she received a letter that her mother was sick. She was granted permission by the queen to take as long as she needed, and since then, we haven’t heard from her. I am so sorry I couldn’t give you more useful information."

"No, it’s no fault of yours," Mauve said with a soft tone. She didn’t know what to think or what to do.

Some of her felt bad for thinking Vae didn’t even think about her and was a little too eager to leave. She didn’t know the poor maid had this much calamity to deal with.

"What exactly is wrong with her mother?"

Maria shook her head, "I don’t really know, but I know it isn’t good. The rumors say it’s the white disease..."

"White disease?" Mauve asked in horror.

The White Disease was also known as the vampire disease, but this was pretty uncommon. It was easy to detect the disease as it made whoever was infected grow very pale spots all over their body, and these spots spread.

It wasn’t communicable; however, there wasn’t a known form of getting the infection, and people still think it was contagious.

The reason Mauve was sure it wasn’t was because her mother had it. She winced as the memory poured into her head. Unfortunately, there was no known cure, and all infected have been known to die of the disease.

"But that’s rumors," Maria hurriedly said when she saw Mauve’s reaction. "And one can really know for sure as they aren’t close enough for us to confirm."

"I see," Mauve said with a soft nod.

"I will keep my ears peeled and let you know if I do find any more information."

"Yes, please do that."

"You can count on me. I am done," she said, stepping back and slightly bending her head.

"Thank you," Mauve said and rose to her feet.

Her mood was utterly ruined. She was about to join the rest of the house for lunch, but she could tell she would rather eat all alone.

She shook her head as she thought of Vae; she wondered how the maid was doing all by herself and if she regretted going to the vampire regions.

Mauve couldn’t help but think this could have been avoided if Vae hadn’t come with her. At least she would still be engaged.

It was too much, losing her fiancé, and now there was a chance that she might lose her mother. Mauve was sad she could even comfort her.

She should have asked questions sooner; maybe she would have gotten answers by now, but she didn’t want to intrude or seem desperate. After all, Vae had left as quickly as she could without saying a word to her, and even though she wrote a letter, she never got a response.

However, now that she found out what had happened to her, she was angry at herself and very sad. With the look of things, she doubted Vae had gotten her letter, and even if she did, she was too overwhelmed to reply. She wanted to see the maid as soon as she could.

"Mauve," a voice drew her from her thoughts.

"Galath," she responded.

Mauve looked down the stairs to see Galath at the foot of it. She had been so lost in her thoughts that she didn’t even know when she reached the staircase.

He frowned as he looked up at her, "Is everything alright? You look a little out of it."

She shook her head, "I am just tired."

"Are you sure? If there is an issue? I will help out in every way I can."

She smiled at him; his enthusiasm and way of always rushing to her aid were soothing.

She got to the foot of the stairs, "Thank you," she smiled at him. "But it’s nothing really."

She doubted this was something she could bother him about. He hasn’t stayed in the castle long enough to help.

"If you insist," he said, smiling at her. "But perk up; it’s a bit gloomy to see you in such a sour mood."

"I am not in a sour mood," she responded. "I am just tired."

"And I believe you partially," he winked at her.

She chuckled, "We should get going, or we would be late."

"Ah, yes. The king wouldn’t like that at all. It’s best not to keep him waiting."

Mauve couldn’t care if she kept anyone waiting or not. She was already exhausted. This charade had gone on for far too long, and by the looks of things, it wouldn’t end soon.

But right now, that was the least of her worries; she just got a new priority, and that was finding out all she could about Vae and her sick mother and helping out in any way she could.

She might as well use her princess status. If she could make a difference to someone who had pretty much helped her, what use was she?

She didn’t know what she could possibly do to help, but she was going to try her hardest. But first, she had to find the maid.

Mauve groaned. The fastest way would be to ask her father. He would surely know how to find her. However, she wasn’t sure she wanted to play that daughter’s role in purpose.

Her only other option would be to ask Malcolm; he would be able to help, but asking the King would definitely bring faster results.

However, she didn’t want to owe more than she already had. Nevertheless, this was a life and death situation, and it was for Vae, that she would do her best.

She winced as she stepped into the dining room. The stares were something she would never get used to. It reminded her of Jael castle; maybe it was because it was accompanied by the sense that no matter how hard she tried, she would never really be a part of this.
