The Vampire King's Possession
Chapter 366. Resent?

Chapter 366: 366. Resent?

"How was it?" He asked.

"How was what?" She asked without looking up at him.

"The Vampire Regions, I hear you just returned." He peered down at her, his gaze never wavering. Mauve could see him stare at her but could almost feel it.

"Better than I expected."

She glanced up just as he frowned, obviously not pleased with her reply.

"I am sure you have a better response than that. You ventured into a place most people don’t return from."

"I am alive which means there was some good to it."

His expression turned sad. "I am sorry," he said. "I didn’t know until..."

"There is no need for you to apologize," she looked up at him with a bright smile.

"Your fake smile hurts even more. If only I was around..."

"It wouldn’t have changed anything and you know this," she interrupted.

"Ouch! Do you resent me? Resent us?"

Mauve frowned, she had never really thought about it but she was never one to put herself first so that was expected.

"I don’t know," she replied.

Maybe if this had not gone the way they did, she would have hated them for sure but irrespective of the circumstances, she had met Jael.

She would be lying if she said she wouldn’t do it again. Maybe she would do things a little differently.

Mauve winced there must be something wrong with her, why was she still thinking about someone who easily tossed her out?

"Did you fall in love with him?"

"What?" Mauve asked but her face already gave away the answer. "No," she said, turning her head away.

"You’ve always been a bad liar," he replied.

"I like to think I am a decent liar."

Mauve touched the blades of grass, it was most likely left overgrown so the horses could eat it.

She felt a little prick and pulled away her hand. She looked at it, it didn’t hurt and she couldn’t see anything stick out. She blew air on it and didn’t touch the grass anymore.

"Well he must have been decent enough, I don’t see you falling for a monster."

"A monster huh?"

She remembered how terrified she had been of him on the day of the wedding. If she thought had enough she could taste the fear. The only other incident that came close was when she was attacked by a paler.

"They treated you well, I assume?" He asked.

"Yeah, mostly. It was definitely better than what I got here."

"It’s been only a year. Where did my shy, timid sister go?" He gave a sad smirk.

"She is right here, you’ve just always been easy to talk to," she shrugged.

It had always been easy to talk to him but since she was fighting for his approval then it had been hard to say exactly what she wanted to say. Now that she truly didn’t care, the words flowed like a river.

"I will take that as a compliment."

She grinned and turned to the grass again. She remembered her past encounter, she put down her rising hand.

"I know it doesn’t make a difference now but I want you to know that I would have done my best to stop it. I wouldn’t have let them send you off to such a place."

It was nice to know someone would have fought to stop her from going; however, she doubted it would have been successful.

"It was for peace. You would have been the only other person who thought it was a bad idea."

They had stopped walking at this point. The sun was preparing to set. They had probably another two hours. Mauve squinted her eyes as she looked down the field.

"It is pretty clear that it is a bad idea."

"I am sure sending off one puny illegitimate child for the sake of a nation even if they were the same people putting the nation at risk was a small price to pay for the greater good."

Mauve didn’t resent them, however, it was hard not to get angry that they easily sent her to the lion’s pit without a shred of sympathy.

She didn’t know what she thought she would feel when she got home but she was more numb than anything.

"You are more than that, Mauve, and you don’t have to go back if you don’t want to, I will fight tooth and nail to keep you here even if it means going against vampires."

"I appreciate the care but I’m married to these Vampires, your grace. If my husband came calling, I’m afraid I would have to return home."

She watched him wince as she didn’t call him by his title. She knew she was going out on him but what else could she do, this is the only person that would listen to a bit of her rage.

It wasn’t his fault and maybe because it was easier to blame him but she knew he would have tried his hardest to prevent her from getting married off.

However, his input truly wouldn’t have made much difference. Malcolm never went against his parents, especially his mother.

"Home?" He looked concerned and appalled.

Mauve tried to keep a straight face. Apparently calling the vampire regions home had pulled out more of a reaction than she not calling him by his name.

"Yeah, home so you don’t have to worry about fighting these vampires. Besides, I doubt it’s a war you can win."

Mauve almost laughed out loud at her sentence like anyone was willing to fight over her case. Here she was bluffing like she had any home to return to.

"Don’t underestimate humans because you have been hanging out with vampires. I am glad you didn’t hate it there."

He stretched out his hand and took a leaf off her shoulders. Mauve watched him flick it but it didn’t fall to the ground. A light wind picked up tossing around the left for a little bit. Mauve thought it looked free.

"I didn’t," she whispered. She truly didn’t.
