The Vampire King's Possession -
Chapter 343. Danag’s Warning
Chapter 343: 343. Danag’s Warning
"I am glad you think so. However, don’t forget I am a vampire first. I would always think vampires are better."
She chuckled, "That’s expected and I won’t forget."
"Good," he replied.
Mauve frowned, she thought Danag was just teasing her but this was starting to get serious and he looked like he meant every word.
"I guess," she whispered.
"I hope your stay at the castle was favorable and I know it wasn’t what you’re used to," he suddenly said.
"It was nice," she nodded with a soft smile. She was glad for the change of topic, the other was getting a little intense for her to handle.
"If you want my advice, I’d say you shouldn’t return no matter what. Vampire Regions isn’t safe for a human."
Mauve blinked once twice but there was no humor in Danag’s words nor his expression. Mauve suddenly felt very cold and she wrapped her hand around her body.
"You don’t have to worry about that, I am sure I won’t be returning. Jael had been quite adamant about that."
"I am glad you understand that this is what is best for you. It’s a shame you have to leave but it would be even worse if you ever returned."
Was this some kind of warning? What exactly was going on here? Everyone and deciding what was best for her, it was really pissing.
Still, it hurt to hear Danag say she shouldn’t come back. She had thought at least he would be sad to see her go.
"You make it sound as though there is a chance Jael would ask me to come back," she said looking at her feet.
"There is no chance," he said matter-of-factly.
Mauve jerked her head up. Maybe this was for the best, she didn’t want to admit it and she was still holding on to the tiny hope that a change might occur but that was proving to not be the case.
"Oh, then you don’t have to worry." She blinked back the tears building off. Danag sounded too confident for her liking.
"I am thinking about the off chance that you’ll decide to come back yourself."
Mauve threw her head back and gave a sad laugh, "You don’t have to worry about that. I wouldn’t dare go where I am not wanted, I know better."
"Good," he replied with his usual smile but this time Mauve didn’t find it very soothing.
The silence that followed after the conversation was very uncomfortable. Had Danag just been tolerating her presence?
He could just be giving her advice but his tone said something different. He truly would prefer if she didn’t return.
She glanced in his direction, watching his face closely. She could never tell with vampires but one thing she had discovered was thinking she was the same as them was a terrible idea.
Everything was so exhausting, she didn’t know what was the right or wrong thing to do and thinking about it, made her head hurt.
Mauve eyes suddenly flew open, she must have fallen asleep at some point. That was not surprising since the only amount of sleep she got was less than two hours.
She arched her neck to the side, it felt a bit stiff. Just how long did she sleep for? She let out a soft yawn as she stared out of the window.
"You’re finally awake," Danag said.
She turned her gaze away from the window to look at him. "I guess, I was really tired."
"It’s fine, you don’t have to explain yourself."
"Okay," she replied but still felt a little embarrassed. "How long was I asleep?"
"A little over an hour. I am not so sure, I don’t know exactly when you fell asleep but I’m certain it wasn’t for up to two hours." Danag explained.
"I see," Mauve said, looking out the window again.
No wonder it was still this dark out. The time was probably a few minutes past two or later. She couldn’t say for sure but there was still a few hours before dawn.
Mauve frowned as she realized they were passing amongst trees. She had been concentrating on the sky so that she didn’t notice the land.
"Yes," he said as if he heard her thoughts. "We are out of the Nolands, about ten minutes before you woke up and in about thirty minutes we should be in the nearest village. We are already in the human Kingdom."
Mauve smiled as she stared at the window. They were already in Greenham. Of course, the scenery didn’t look familiar.
However, clusters of trees was usually an indication that one was out of the Nolands. She was back. Well, she still had over a week to get to her father’s castle but technically she was back.
"That was fast," she whispered,
"I know right, Erick controlled the horses better than I thought he would."
"I’m sure he must be exhausted," she said, feeling just a tinge of sadness that he was driving the carriage because of her.
"I doubt it. He is tougher than he acts and it was his decision."
Mauve nodded, "Yeah, he could have ridden in this cozy coach but he chose discomfort."
Danag nodded his head, "He was all in his head. You are a great company."
"Why thank you," she smiled , feeling a blush coming along. Even if Danag was just going along with her, it was a nice compliment.
"You’re welcome. If you need to sleep some more, you can. I will wake you up when we get to our destination."
Mauve shook her head, "I don’t think I would fall asleep again. Not when we are this close."
"You’re right. I am sure you’re excited to go home. You have been away for a long time."
Mauve shrugged, she doubted excitement was the emotion she was feeling. It was more like relief that she got her without any incident.
"I guess," she replied. "I am just glad that this time we weren’t attacked or anything."
"I told you, you don’t have to worry about that."
"I remember," she said. "But having you all escort me must have been somewhat troubling, no matter how you try to downplay it and I am grateful you’re willing to take the risk for me."
Danag blinked at her words. He looked like he was about to speak but she didn’t let him.
"Thank you, Danag. I am really glad I got to meet you."
"Same here Mauve and you don’t have to thank me, I am simply doing my duty."
Mauve shook her head, Danag was very wrong. If it wasn’t for him she wouldn’t be here now and she would have probably given up on trying to come back.
"You’re wrong, you could have done your job improperly but you didn’t and I am grateful for that. You’ve treated me with nothing but respect and I wished I could have stayed longer, I truly did think Vampire Regions was my home. I know you think I wouldn’t have survived there but I don’t regret any minute I spent there."
Mauve instinctively touched her arm. She couldn’t feel the scars from her shirt but she was sure she didn’t regret them. At least they would remind her for a long time of her experiences even if she forgot.
"It is a pity it couldn’t be your home for real," Danag said sympathetically.
"You think so?" She asked.
Danag nodded. Mauve blinked, there was no sign of deceit in his words.
"Thank you," she whispered, looking out the window. She knew if she spoke on the matter any more, she would cry.
She was here now and that was all in the past. She didn’t know what awaited her in this place or what her next Chapter was about but she had no option but to move forward.
Mauve squinted her eyes. She could make out something in front of her but it was hard to tell when it was still this dark.
"That’s the nearest village, we should go through the gates in a few minutes. That’s our stop."
Mauve looked at Danag, "You would be returning to the palace?" She already knew this but she couldn’t help but ask.
"I am afraid yes, the rest of the guards have already started returning to the palace. They were only supposed to follow us out of the Nolands. As soon as you’re safely in the village’s vicinity, I and Erick will immediately take our leave."
"I understand, you all have done more than enough." Mauve said absentmindedly, she was more worried about there being a mode of transportation for her.
Even though her father’s letter had said he would take care of it, she still found it very hard to believe.
She swallowed as she looked out the window with a prayer in her heart. She gave up her new home for this. It would surely hurt if her father didn’t keep to his words.
