The Vampire King's Possession -
Chapter 280. Haney
Chapter 280: 280. Haney
Mauve stood at the top of the stairs watching as Jael addressed the vampires. They didn’t look very familiar and she assumed they were probably the workers.
It was the second night after the meeting and according to what Jael told her, they should start to work on the fence today.
She shouldn’t be here but she didn’t want to be in her room anymore, besides, she was excited to see how this would go. She knew wouldn’t be allowed outside while they worked but at least she would be able to stay as close as possible.
It wasn’t like she was breaking any rule as Jael didn’t say she couldn’t move around. However, she didn’t want to be in anyone’s way as it was likely going to be a busy period.
Suddenly, Jael turned around and looked straight at her. Her breath held and for a second as she wondered if he would scold her or worse.
However, none of that happened as he smiled briefly at her and then turned away from her. Mauve blushed and leaned into the bars supporting the stairs for support.
Suddenly, the vampires bowed and slowly started to move in the direction of the kitchen while Jael turned toward her and started for the stairs.
He stopped at the foot of it and gestured for her to come down. She carefully set off, knowing that he watching her every move made each step difficult. She dared not trip, he would definitely mock for if she did.
The injury on her head has healed up at this point and by the looks of this, the scar should start to fade off soon, compared to the scars on her arm. She shook the thought away and concentrate and getting to the end of the stairs.
She had expected more of a reaction from Jael about the scratch but he had mostly teased her about it.
He caught her as she got to the end of the stairs. She pulled away from his body and looked up at his face. His blue eyes met her gaze before she looked down.
"What was that about?"
"Nothing serious, they know what they have to do but if figured it might help if I spoke to them."
"Would they start on the fence immediately?" She asked unable to contain her excitement.
"Well, not immediately. It’s time for the second meal and since they just arrived it’s only fair they get some rest," he replied.
"Yeah, I figured." She said and bent her head.
"But they would definitely begin today since most of the supplies arrived yesterday night. How are you?"
She nodded and her stomach growled. Jael chuckled. "Yes, we should go to eat now," he responded.
"It wasn’t even that loud. It’s because you vampires have sharp ears."
"If you say so," he said and pinched the bridge of her nose.
"Awww," she replied and covered her nose.
"Your wound is mostly gone," he replied and tucked her hair behind her ear.
She nodded happily, "It doesn’t even hurt anymore."
"That’s good. The scar is minimal, I see."
"Yeah, it should fade in a few weeks."
Jael frowned, "You take too long to heal, if you were a vampire a scratch like would be gone in minutes."
"I’m not," she said darkly, annoyed by the implication. If she was a vampire maybe they would accept her here.
"I know that’s why you should be careful." He brushed her cheeks with his fingers before his hands fell to her side.
"Don’t make it sound like I am falling on purpose."
"I didn’t say that either. We should go eat, considering your stomach is growling, I am sure you’re starving."
She opened her mouth to protest but he grabbed her wrist and tugged. Mauve gave in easily, it was better than trying to fight him off.
Things between them were good even though he seemed quite busy, he always tried to spend some time with her.
This was the first time she would see him since the first meal today. He had been locked up in his study with Danag.
She wasn’t sure it was just about the fence anymore but she couldn’t exactly ask. Servants also seemed busy and wondered if anything was about to happen.
She hung onto his arm as they approached the door to the dining room. The guards in front did a quick bow before they pushed the doors open.
Jael didn’t spare them a second glance as they walked in while Mauve tried to nod at them. Not that it would make any difference as they were likely to ignore her as usual.
The door closed behind them and a unison, "Sire," reached Mauve’s ear.
She looked in front of her and a puzzled expression appeared on her face. There was a new face amongst the familiar ones.
Mauve stiffened against Jael’s arm as his gaze fell on her. His brow dipped and he glared at her. Mauve immediately looked away, fighting the urge to pull away from Jael’s grasp.
Another vampire who didn’t like her presence. However, she wasn’t certain if it was because she was human or because she was a human clinging to Jael. Either way, this was no different from what she was used to and she was certain she could withstand whatever he would throw at her.
She pulled away from Jael when they got to the table and he slowly let go of her. She slid in next to him and the rest of them sat down.
"Mauve," Danag said to her.
"Danag," she repeated with a smile and he looked away.
That was the extent of their conversations these days. He never spoke more than her name. He would always acknowledge her presence but he didn’t bother to make small talk as he usually would.
This bothered her but she figured he was likely busy besides, if something was wrong he would ignore her altogether.
She barely spoke to Damon or Erick so whether or not they spoke didn’t really mean anything. Still, she wanted things to get better, not worse.
"Haney," Jael said as he sat down. "I didn’t expect Lord Garth to send you, I hope you found the journey pleasant."
"I did, Sire. Please do not worry yourself about the likes of me and thank you for your hospitality. A vampire like me shouldn’t be seated at a table with the Primus."
"Haney, you’re Lord Garth’s right-hand man. He shouldn’t have gone this far."
"He wanted to oversee the progress of the fence himself and since this would take some time he decided to send me here."
"He didn’t have to, I am sure you are needed more at the Garth ’s Estate," Jael said.
"The estate can fair without my presence. However, Lord Garth wouldn’t be happy if the job here wasn’t done well and I hope you can condone my presence for the duration of the fence."
"Condone? I am glad Lord Garth thinks this is so important that you’d send you to supervise. I am sure it will be a job well done."
"You can count on me, your grace," Haney said with a soft bow. He glanced at Mauve who was staring at him and she quickly looked away.
It was hard to place Haney, he looked young enough but he sounded older, it didn’t help that his voice was deep. He had a stubble and his hair was cut low.
He had some weight on him but Mauve could tell he was strong, maybe it was all the muscle mass she could see or just the fact that he looked strong. She couldn’t exactly tell.
The servants started to dish out the food and Mauve was grateful for the distraction as she felt Haney’s gaze leave her.
Would she continually have to dine with him from now henceforth? She didn’t have a problem with it but the intensity of his stare would need some getting used to.
"I heard you intend to start training the special unit before the week is out," Haney suddenly asked.
Jael nodded, stopping mid-bite. "Hopefully, they wouldn’t need much training," Jael said with a laugh.
"I doubt that," Danag said darkly.
"I am sure you can handle them, Danag. I am this good because of you." Jael said with a smirk.
"You flatter me too much, sire," Danag replied.
"Yes," Haney chirped in. "I did hear, you’d be in charge of the training. It would be a lot of work."
"Tell me about it," Danag replied.
Haney laughed, "However, you might run into a few lads who wouldn’t need much training."
"It’s palers, we can’t be too careful. They would all need a significant amount of training. I doubt any Lords would send experienced guards, they would want to keep them in case of paler attacks."
"Ah, that makes sense. Most of them will probably have never faced off a paler. You have your work cut out for you but if you don’t mind, I can lend you a hand for as long as I am here." Haney announced.
