Chapter 104: 104. Someone Else Would

She is seated by the dresser with a quill in her hand, she tries to write on the piece of paper in front of her when suddenly the lights go out and the quill is viciously pulled out of her hand. A hand wraps her neck and she tries to scream but no sound comes out.

She tries to unlock the hand around her neck but before she can reach out to touch it, she is lifted off the chair with her neck. She kicks vigorously and scratches the hand but it only makes her situation worse as the grip tightens around her neck.

"Mauve! Mauve!" A loud voice called. "Wake up Mauve. It’s a dream. Wake up."

Mauve eyes flew open and she took a deep breath. Her face felt wet but she wasn’t too concerned about that as she wrapped her arms around Jael. "I was so scared," she cried.

"I know," Jael said and held her tighter as she sobbed into his chest. "You are with me and I won’t let anyone harm you. Not again."

She sniffled but did not stop crying immediately. Finally, her shoulders stopped shaking, only her sniffles could be heard. He held her to his chest until she fell asleep. This time around, she slept peacefully.

Mauve slowly opened her eyes, she blinked as her eyes tried to focus, only for her to see Jael’s face just inches away from hers. "Gah! What are you still doing here?" She blurted out.

"If I didn’t know better I would think you aren’t happy to see me."

"It is not that," Her voice was lower now. "It is just that you are always gone by the time I wake up."

"Not always. How do you feel?" He asked, suddenly changing the subject.

Mauve stretched and yawned. "Tired," she groaned.

He brushed the hair from her face, "By this time tomorrow, it should relatively be over and you can leave your room."

Mauve’s face brightened up immediately. "Finally," she squealed.

A soft knock drew her attention to the door. He placed a kiss on her forehead. "I have to go."

"I know," she said.

His eyes roamed her face before he stood up from the bed. "If it is important, you can always tell any servant to call for me."

"I don’t think there would be any need for that."

She hugged herself as she thought back to the dream. She could barely remember the details, only that she had been very scared. She shook her head, nothing was trying to get her. There was no need to be paranoid.

He ruffled her hair, "There will be a guard outside your door at all times. So you can be sure you won’t be getting any unwanted visitors."

She nodded, somehow, it was a little refreshing to hear that. "I will be fine," she heard herself say. Of course, she would be. It was just for one more night.

He squinted his eyes at her before making his way to the connecting door. She watched him go just as another knock reminded her that someone was behind the door.

"Come in," she hurriedly said and sat up in her bed.

Mill walked in with her bathing water. "Were you asleep, Mauve? I was tempted to burst into your room."

Mauve chuckled awkwardly but didn’t reply. She didn’t want to lie and she didn’t want to tell why. It wasn’t that it was anything to hide, it was just better than saying she was busy getting fussed over.

"You are early," she said instead.

Mill looked at Mauve with a frown. "Oh, are you not ready to take your bath yet?" Mill asked.

"No, it isn’t that. You are just on time every day."

"Ah, I see. I have a lot to do today so yeah, the faster I can finish with you, the better." She said,

"I totally understand," Mauve said and got out of bed.

Mill was by her side in seconds, she helped her out of the dress.

"Did you sleep well?" Mill asked.

Mauve nodded.

Mill touched her wrapped palm, "And this?" She asked softly.

"I think I can take it off now. There is barely any pain."

Mill frowned and squinted her eyes at Mauve, "I don’t think, humans, heal that fast. I am keeping it on."

Mauve didn’t argue, just nodded in agreement to what Mill suggested. "I guess another day wouldn’t be bad," she mumbled

Mill scrubbed Mauve clean while she sat in the tub. She got out and Mill wiped her dry.

"Any plans on what you want to wear?"

Mauve groaned, she could be left in her nightdress for all she cared. "Anything comfortable is fine."

"How about this?" Mill asked, pulling out a bright green dress.

Mauve cringed, at this point, she was convinced Mill was color blind. "I am not trying to attract birds, Mill. Anything else but that color."

Mill’s head disappeared and she pulled out a brown dress. The color was awful and it looked closer to dirt than anything else. It also didn’t help that it was a little worn out.

"Yes, please." Mauve said without blinking.

Mill looked at the dress and back at Mauve. The look of disbelief on her face was pretty obvious.

"It is comfortable," Mauve explained.

"Okay," she said and walked towards Mill with the dress.

"It looks gloomy," she said as she helped Mauve into the dress. "Something brighter would have been much better."

Mauve shook her head, "No, thank you."

"I won’t be able to bring you any meals today," she said to Mauve as she brushed her hair. "Someone else would."

"Oh okay." Mauve wanted to ask why but she figured it had something to do with the party so she just nodded. However, she was worried about that look in Mill’s eyes.

"If you need anything, let them know."

"It is fine. I don’t think I will need anything but yes, I will ask if I need to.

"Good," Mill said, wrapping Mauve hair in a bun. "All done," she announced.

Mauve waved to Mill as she left her room and she climbed the bed. A few seconds later, she heard a soft knock. "Come in," she mumbled.

A servant she recognized walked in with a tray in her hands.
