Chapter 697: The Journey Home

Chapter 697: Chapter 697: The Journey Home

This family banquet could not be described as thoroughly joyous, but at least it passed in relative peace.

However, "peace" might not be quite the right word. After Baili Hengyuan agreed to the marriage, though the three Baili brothers had nothing more to say, they still found Zhong Mingxin quite disagreeable. They kept toasting him insistently, the kind he could not refuse.

Faced with his three formidable brothers-in-law, Zhong Mingxin naturally didn’t dare to decline and could only continue with a forced smile. As for the toasts, he accepted each one without objection and before long, he became quite drunk.

Baili Hengyuan didn’t intercede, but he observed the scene with detached indifference, clearly supportive of his sons’ behavior.

Le Yao, seeing this, naturally felt sorry for him. She didn’t step in to stop it either, because she understood very well that without giving her brothers a chance to vent their frustration, they would continue to make things difficult for Mingxin in the future.

Zhong Niangyao was indifferent. After all, she had said all she wanted to say. As for anything else, she felt it was better not to get too involved.

Throughout everything happening at the dinner table, Lu Yichen seemed uninvolved, his attention fixed entirely on Zhong Niangyao.

By the end of the meal, Zhong Mingxin was completely drunk, while everyone else remained sober.

Seeing the outcome, Zhong Niangyao wasn’t surprised at all.

With Baili Hengyuan’s blessing, Baili Lele accompanied Zhong Mingxin back to the Zhong Family this time.

Initially, Baili Hengyuan planned to go with them and perhaps discuss the wedding details, but due to the recent surge of affairs in the Baili Family, he could only set out later, allowing them to leave first.

Under normal circumstances, when arranging a marriage, it should be the man’s family who visits the woman’s. But the situation was unique as Old Madam Zhong and Old Sir Zhong couldn’t enter the Hidden Family’s residence. Therefore, Baili Hengyuan decided to set off later to discuss the wedding personally.

When they boarded the airplane, Zhong Mingxin was visibly excited, yet at the same time a bit nervous. Although he had only spent ten years in that other world, he had been away for over twenty years from this one. Now finally able to return home, he felt a bit apprehensive. However, the thought of seeing his parents and family again made him uncontrollably thrilled.

Watching such an excited Zhong Mingxin, Baili Lele couldn’t help but tease, "You’re this happy to leave my family, huh?"

"No, that’s not it."

Zhong Mingxin became anxious, thinking his wife had misunderstood him, and he hurriedly tried to explain, but his words came out all jumbled, "I’m just... going home... I mean... I’m just happy to go home, that’s all... nothing else..."

Seeing the eagerness of Zhong Mingxin, Baili Lele couldn’t help but cover her mouth and laugh.

Initially thinking his wife was angry, Zhong Mingxin was relieved to see her suddenly laughing. Moreover, she didn’t seem angry at all.

"Idiot, I was just teasing you," Baili Lele said with a smile, "Actually, I’m also looking forward to visiting your home and meeting your parents."

At this point, her tone betrayed a hint of concern, "It’s just that you wouldn’t have had to collect that medicine if it wasn’t for me. If not for that, you wouldn’t have been separated from them for so many years. I wonder if they will blame me."

"That won’t happen," Zhong Mingxin reassured her, taking her hand, "My parents are very reasonable people. The events of that year have nothing to do with you. Everything I’ve done for you was willingly."

Le Yao nodded, then softly added, "Even if they do blame me, it doesn’t matter; I’m still grateful to them. They helped raise Niangyao into such an exceptional person. Just for that alone, they are my benefactors. No matter what they think, I will respect them as I do my own parents."

Zhong Mingxin didn’t say anything more, simply nodding lightly.

On the other side, Lu Yi and Zhong Niangyao were engrossed in their quiet conversation, without much thought to the others.

They were flying back on Lu Yi’s private jet.

However, considering that Zhong Mingxin and Baili Lele had been apart for so long and hadn’t had much time to talk in the Baili Family, perhaps they wanted to take the opportunity of the journey back to have a good conversation.

To avoid disturbing them, Zhong Niangyao took Lu Yi to sit down in a different area.

Seeing the rosy, ambiguous atmosphere surrounding Zhong Mingxin and Baili Lele, Zhong Niangyao silently nodded, feeling her decision was correct.

"You’re paying quite a lot of attention to them," Lu Yi commented nonchalantly, "They’re not children anymore; you don’t need to be so concerned."

His tone was calm, like it was a casual remark. But if one listened closely, there seemed to be a whiff of sourness in his words.

Zhong Niangyao, of course, caught the jealousy and turned to Lu Yi with a hint of amusement in her eyes, teasing, "Oh? Shouldn’t I pay attention to them? Or are you just jealous?"

She expected Lu Yi to refute her directly, but to her surprise, he simply admitted it.

Faced with Zhong Niangyao’s teasing, Lu Yi simply nodded and said earnestly, "Yes, I am jealous. Even if Zhong Mingxin and Baili Lele can be considered your parents, I still don’t like you spending so much time on them. Because of them, you’ve spent less time with me lately."

Hearing Lu Yi’s words and seeing the faint hint of hurt on his face, Zhong Niangyao felt like a jerk.

But then she snapped out of it and rolled her eyes at Lu Yi irritably, "You’re not a child, stop acting already! Are you trying to make me feel guilty with this display?"

"Are you feeling guilty now?"

Instead of feeling embarrassed at being called out, Lu Yi just laid his head on Zhong Niangyao’s shoulder, "Have you thought about how you’re going to make it up to me?"

Seeing Lu Yi’s pushy behavior, Zhong Niangyao glared at him, then reached out, grabbed a handful of flesh on Lu Yi’s waist, and twisted it, "Is this the kind of compensation you want?"
