Chapter 668: Chapter 668 Compromise

"I need not trouble the Empress Dowager to worry about my fate," Zhong Nianyao laughed boldly. "The Empress Dowager might want to worry about what fate you and Nangong Xin are going to meet instead!"

Seeing Zhong Nianyao’s fearless demeanor, the Empress Dowager was so angry she was about to faint.

What could happen to her, even without Zhong Nianyao saying, she could imagine. If the Royal Family found out she had lost her virginity before entering the palace and had given birth to a daughter, not even the Emperor could save her. At the very least, her position as the Empress Dowager would be absolutely untenable.

Although she wouldn’t die, she would likely be driven out of the palace to keep vigil in the remote Imperial Mausoleum for the late Emperor or to pray for Lai Country in some desolate temple.

Not only that, but even after her death, she might not be able to be buried in the Imperial Mausoleum.

Thinking of these things, the Empress Dowager forced down the hatred in her heart and spoke through gritted teeth, "Fine, I promise you, I won’t try to save Nangong Xin anymore."

Watching the Empress Dowager’s expression, Zhong Nianyao felt amused. "Empress Dowager, why put on such an act here? Your feelings for Nangong Xin aren’t deep, are they? If you really cared for Nangong Xin, she wouldn’t have ended up in such a state."

"This has nothing to do with you," the Empress Dowager said, her eyes nearly bursting with rage as she glared at Zhong Nianyao. "Don’t think you know all of my thoughts just because you have something on me. Zhong Nianyao, do you think you’re so remarkable? State Preceptor, it sounds nice, but in the end, you are just a dog of our Royal Family."

Upon hearing such curses from the Empress Dowager, Zhong Nianyao didn’t get angry. "Since you know I have something on you, you should be a bit more restrained. You don’t really think I wouldn’t dare to expose these things, do you?"

"You—" The Empress Dowager was choked with fury. "Don’t push your luck."

"Ha, then you really have wronged me," Zhong Nianyao blinked innocently. "I have never pushed my luck; I was forced into this by you."

"If from the beginning you hadn’t interfered in Nangong Xin’s affairs, it wouldn’t have come to this. After all, if you hadn’t stood together, I might not have noticed the blood relationship between you and Nangong Xin."

Hearing Zhong Nianyao’s words, the Empress Dowager was so angry she nearly spat blood. "Zhong Nianyao, you’re doing this on purpose, aren’t you?"

"I can’t be blamed for that!" Zhong Nianyao looked at the Empress Dowager, her smile containing a hint of disdain. "Empress Dowager, why are you so distressed? There are no feelings between you and Nangong Xin at all, only that slight blood relation. So, whatever becomes of her, you shouldn’t care much, right?"

Let alone Nangong Xin, even Madam Nangong from before was probably never much of a concern to the Empress Dowager. The only reason she stepped in this time to save Nangong Xin was out of blood relation. Of course, there was also the need to assert her majesty as the Empress Dowager.

Unfortunately for the Empress Dowager, trying to establish authority through this matter was utterly impossible. And Zhong Nianyao would not give her the chance.

"Fine, I agree to it," the Empress Dowager said through gritted teeth. "I will no longer involve myself in Nangong Xin’s affairs. However you wish to deal with her, I won’t interfere. Is that satisfactory?"

"No," Zhong Nianyao shook her head, smiling. "Empress Dowager, since it was you who saved Nangong Xin and vehemently stopped the Emperor from revoking Princess Consort Nangong Xin’s title, it should be you who virtuously breaks ties, going to the Emperor personally to clarify and asking the Emperor to strictly punish Nangong Xin."

"Zhong Nianyao, you’re going too far," the Empress Dowager faced her with furious eyes. "You’re aggressively forcing my hand; are you not afraid that I’d kill you?"

"Kill me?" Zhong Nianyao blinked, laughing. "Empress Dowager, you really think too highly of yourself. Do you truly believe you have the ability?"

That dismissive attitude immediately ignited the Empress Dowager’s fury, but before she could vent her anger, she was shocked into silence by Zhong Nianyao’s next move.

After speaking, Zhong Nianyao raised her hand and then pinched.

A vase not far away shattered instantly, making a crisp sound. Without any warning, the vase exploded as if it had been bombed.

Seeing such a sight, the Empress Dowager’s heart skipped a beat, and fear arose. Her voice trembling, she said, "You... what do you want to do? If... if something happens to me, you won’t escape either."

"Ha, Empress Dowager, what are you worried about?" Zhong Nianyao laughed lazily. "I have no intention of hurting you. After all, you were just in the dark about my father’s matter. However—"

Her tone shifted, and the smile on Zhong Nianyao’s face turned wicked. "If you insist on protecting Nangong Xin, I will get quite angry. As for what I’ll do then, it simply cannot be said."

"I suppose you haven’t forgotten that I was once the State Preceptor of Lai Country," Zhong Nianyao continued. "My abilities are something you should remember."

Upon those words, the Empress Dowager’s breathing halted for a moment, as fear and a sense of helplessness welled up from within.

Indeed! How could she forget? Even though it was inconceivable, Zhong Nianyao had indeed returned. It was with her own abilities that Zhong Nianyao had assumed the position of State Preceptor, and those mysterious and unpredictable abilities were not something she, a mere mortal, could resist.

Ten years had passed, and how could she ever forget those abilities that Zhong Nianyao possessed!

Taking a deep breath, the Empress Dowager struggled to suppress the fear in her heart, caving in, "I understand. Shortly, I will personally take Nangong Xin to the Emperor to explain the situation and let the Emperor give her the punishment she deserves."

Zhong Nianyao nodded in satisfaction, then smiled. "It seems the Empress Dowager is a reasonable person after all! I truly thank you for seeking justice for my father."

At this point, even with her numerous grievances, the Empress Dowager had no choice but to swallow her bitterness. "It is what I should do."

Zhong Nianyao’s mysterious and unpredictable abilities were not something the Empress Dowager could contend with. Furthermore, Zhong Nianyao knew her secret. She was old now, not knowing how many years she had left.

If that affair was revealed now, she wouldn’t know what would become of her a hundred years from now. Perhaps she would not even be allowed into the Imperial Mausoleum, and thus would she not become one of the wandering ghosts.

Moreover, she did not desire to have her reputation destroyed at this time.
