The Useless Heiress Is Actually A Bigshot -
Chapter 659
Chapter 659: 659
Nolan Deye sat there reviewing memorials, not even casting a glance at Nangong Xin, who was kneeling before him, as if she did not exist at all.
As time passed, Nangong Xin’s fear deepened. She did not know what she had done wrong, but the Emperor’s attitude towards her made it painfully clear that it was no small matter.
Suddenly, the doors to the Imperial Study were flung open from the outside. Without any announcement, two figures walked straight in as if no one else was there.
Upon seeing the newcomers, Nolan Deye, who had been reviewing memorials, did not get angry. Instead, he stood up immediately to welcome them, "Lord National Master, you’ve arrived!"
Nangong Xin knelt there, her head bowed, unable to see the guests. However, based on the Emperor’s words and demeanor, she knew these must be the resurrected sorcerer from yesterday’s rampant rumors among Beijing’s elite.
Zhong Niangyao entered and saw Nangong Xin kneeling there, offering a cold smile before she and Lu Yichen took their places to the side.
Nolan Deye returned to his seat at the desk, then lifted his gaze to the still kneeling Nangong Xin and spoke indifferently, "Nangong Xin, you may rise."
Suddenly called upon, Nangong Xin felt no joy, only a wave of anxiety about the unknown. And indeed, her fears were confirmed.
When she raised her head, seeing who stood before her, her heart leapt into her throat as she blurted out, "You impostor, how dare you come to the Imperial Palace?"
At this moment, Princess Mingyue was utterly baffled. She never expected to encounter this person again, especially not here.
"Mingyue, shut your mouth."
The speaker was not Lu Yichen, nor was it Zhong Niangyao, but Nolan Deye, sitting there with a face full of rage. He snatched up a paperweight from the desk and hurled it towards Nangong Xin.
Sensing danger, Nangong Xin instinctively tried to dodge, but then she realized it was the Emperor acting against her. She forcibly stopped herself, allowing the paperweight to strike her.
She did not understand why the Emperor was angry, but she knew she absolutely could not dodge, for that would be an inexcusable act of disrespect.
In the end, the paperweight merely struck Nangong Xin without causing any harm.
Yet, even this was a profound insult to Nangong Xin.
Overwhelmed, she immediately knelt down.
Nolan Delai ignored the panicked Nangong Xin, turning instead to Zhong Niangyao with a respectful tone, "Lord National Master, Mingyue is here, and she will be held accountable for her actions."
Hearing this, Nangong Xin looked up in disbelief.
She had just heard the Emperor address this woman as the National Master.
How could this be? This woman was clearly a fraud; how could she possibly be the resurrected sorcerer?
Then she remembered the Hidden Guards who had died violently and shuddered.
After Zhong Niangyao nodded in acknowledgment to Nolan Delai, she spoke, "Your Majesty, today I am here hoping you will administer justice on my behalf."
"Speak freely, National Master!" Nolan Delai replied hastily. "If Mingyue has indeed done wrong, we will not shield her."
"Your Majesty, I accuse Princess Mingyue of unlawfully detaining my father," Zhong Niangyao said calmly. "Ten years ago, Princess Mingyue fortuitously discovered my injured father. Our family is grateful for her saving his life. However, Princess Mingyue abused this favor; after my father recovered, she detained him in her mansion for ten years."
"I beseech Your Majesty to investigate thoroughly and command Princess Mingyue to release my father, so that our family may be reunited."
"It’s not like that."
Upon hearing this, Nangong Xin, who was kneeling, became frantic, "Your Majesty, she’s only giving her side of the story, which is utterly unreliable! Yes, ten years ago, I did save a man."
"But I never detained him. Ming Xin, the man I found, indeed stayed at the Commandery Princess Mansion, but it was never against his will. Moreover, his ability to live up till now is entirely my doing."
"Your Majesty, you can’t convict your subject based on the words of others!"
Nolan Delai’s expression darkened noticeably.
"Princess Mingyue, do you think we are fools without brains?" Zhong Niangyao scoffed, "If you insist that my father stayed of his own volition, then why not let him come and face me?"
Upon hearing the call to confront, Princess Mingyue’s expression changed slightly, and she objected, "Ming Xin’s health has always been poor, and he needs tranquility. The doctors have also said that his emotions must not fluctuate greatly. If he comes to the palace, and it affects his recovery, what then?"
Hearing this excuse, Zhong Niangyao let out a derisive laugh, "It’s impressive how you manage to concoct such bizarre excuses. Regrettably, no matter how you argue today, Zhong Mingxin must return home with me."
"No, he can’t."
Perhaps hitting a sore spot, Princess Mingyue almost leaped up, nearly forgetting that the Emperor was present, her voice taking on a hysterical edge, "He can’t leave; we’re about to be married, he can’t leave me."
This declaration caught everyone present off guard.
Nolan Delai had not expected things to turn out this way; he, too, felt cornered for a moment.
If it was as Nangong Xin claimed, that Ming Xin was to marry her, then it seemed problematic for the National Master to take him away.
"Since you say my father is willing to marry you, then why can’t he come to the palace and clarify the matter?" Zhong Niangyao retorted with a sneer, "Just now you claimed my words were false, but aren’t your words just as one-sided?"
"I’m not—" Princess Mingyue instinctively began to retort.
"Enough from both of you," Nolan Delai waved his hand, drawing a conclusion, "Since both parties offer differing testimonies, let’s summon the concerned party to clarify the situation. That’s the fairest solution."
Having said this, he ordered someone to go to the Commandery Princess Mansion and bring Zhong Mingxin to the palace for confrontation.
