Chapter 657: Chapter 657: Daring to be Angry but not to Speak Out

"Oh? The most important person, you say?" Zhong Niangyao’s lips curled into a mocking smile before she spoke, somewhat deliberately, "So tell me, who is more important to you, me or Prince Yu?"

Such a question, really, was no less difficult than the classic dilemma of choosing whether to save your mother or your wife if both were drowning.

Han An clearly hadn’t expected Zhong Niangyao to suddenly ask such a question, and for a moment, she didn’t know what to say.

"How about it, is it that hard to answer?"

Watching Han An kneeling there, Zhong Niangyao let out a cold laugh and spoke, "Just now, didn’t you say I was the most important person to you? Why can’t you say it now? Han An, it seems that after so long not seeing each other, your ability to lie with your eyes open has improved!"

"No, that’s not it, Master—I—" Han An kept shaking her head, trying to defend herself.

But she had barely begun to speak when Zhong Niangyao cut her off sharply.

"Don’t call me Master." Zhong Niangyao gently shook her head, her words loaded with endless irony, "You haven’t been my disciple for a long time. From the moment you became Princess Consort Yu, you ceased to be my disciple."

"Master, though I married Prince Yu, in my heart, you will always be my Master." Han An said earnestly, tears in her eyes, "Master, I will always remember that if it weren’t for you, I might well not be in this world anymore."

"Is that so?" Zhong Niangyao shrugged her shoulders, speaking indifferently, "But in my heart, you ceased to be my disciple a long time ago."

Han An knelt on the ground, her complexion turning deathly pale. "Master, I—"

"Actually, the only reason I agreed to meet you today was to make things clear between us." Zhong Niangyao looked down at her, "We have long since severed ties, and I hope you won’t go around claiming to be my disciple anymore."

The color drained entirely from Han An’s face; her lips quivered, and she didn’t know what to say. She hadn’t expected to face such an outcome on her visit today.

Watching Han An’s state, Zhong Niangyao felt no inner turmoil. She turned around, ready to leave.

Han An, still kneeling on the ground, panicked when she saw Zhong Niangyao about to leave. She hastily got up and blocked Zhong Niangyao’s path.

"What is it?"

Looking at Han An blocking her way, Zhong Niangyao blinked with a hint of unfamiliarity in her eyes, "Does Princess Consort Yu have any further instructions?"

"Mas—"

"I’ve told you many times not to call me Master." Zhong Niangyao interrupted Han An, "Being so young, Princess Consort Yu, surely you don’t have hearing problems? If that’s really the case, I fear you might not be able to hold onto your position!"

After hearing Zhong Niangyao’s words, Han An looked hurt. "Mas—State Preceptor, I really know I was wrong, please forgive me this once! I promise, from now on, I will always listen to you, please don’t abandon me!"

"Princess Consort Yu, you exaggerate," Zhong Niangyao scoffed, "There is no relationship between you and me anymore, how can there be forgiveness? I hope in the future when you see me, you’ll act as if you don’t know me."

Having said that, she pushed past Han An and left.

Han An stood frozen, her body icy cold. She could do nothing but watch helplessly as Zhong Niangyao walked away.

She hadn’t foreseen that her reunion with her master would turn out like this. She had anticipated that her master would be angry with her, but never imagined that her master would outright deny recognizing her as a disciple.

How had things turned out this way? At the beginning, she hadn’t genuinely wanted to betray her master; she just wanted to help the person she loved. And she had never truly intended to harm her master.

Now that her master had returned, why wasn’t she willing to forgive an unintentional fault from the past?

Leaving the National Master Hall in despair, Han An seemed utterly disconsolate.

She had just left the National Master Hall when she was taken directly to Noble Princess Consort Wan’s palace.

Upon entering, seeing Noble Princess Consort Wan seated above, fear instinctively rose in Han An’s heart, and she promptly gave her respects, "Your daughter-in-law greets her Mother-In-Law."

As if completely unaware of Han An’s presence and her gesture of respect, Noble Princess Consort Wan picked up her teacup for a sip and then proceeded to slowly eat a piece of pastry from the table.

Han An, still half-kneeling, didn’t dare to rise without hearing words to do so from Noble Princess Consort Wan and thus maintained her position.

It wasn’t until her legs began to tremble that Noble Princess Consort Wan finally deigned to speak, "Stand up!"

Her tone was that of charity, not as if she were addressing her daughter-in-law, but rather someone of lower status.

Han An’s rage simmered silently.

After all these years, she knew all too well that Noble Princess Consort Wan’s kindness to her was only because she was the disciple of the State Preceptor. Thus, after her master’s supposed death, Noble Princess Consort Wan began to treat her harshly.

But, even knowing that Noble Princess Consort Wan was being deliberately harsh, there was nothing she could do. The word "filial" was enough to silence any objection. Besides, this was Prince Yu’s birth mother, her mother-in-law; she was powerless against her.

She had once told her husband about these matters, but he had said she was overthinking it. Afterward, Noble Princess Consort Wan’s harsh treatment only intensified.

Once Han An sat down, Noble Princess Consort Wan finally spoke slowly, "I heard you visited the National Master Hall recently, is that so?"

"Yes." Han An replied respectfully, "Master has returned, and as her disciple, naturally, I had to pay a visit."

Upon hearing Han An’s response, a flicker of light passed across Noble Princess Consort Wan’s eyes as she offhandedly remarked, "It’s quite surprising, isn’t it? The State Preceptor sacrificed himself to heaven, and now he’s able to come back. It’s truly inconceivable."

"My master has always been extraordinary; anything happening to her is no surprise," Han An responded indifferently, "Furthermore, her sacrifice to heaven was a good deed. If heaven didn’t want her to truly die, it’s an affirmation of her."

"Oh, that’s good to hear," Noble Princess Consort Wan nodded slightly before swiftly changing the topic, "Han An, now that your master has returned, do you have any thoughts?"

"Mother-In-Law, I don’t quite understand what you mean," Han An replied bluntly, "If you have something to say, just say it."

Noble Princess Consort Wan looked piercingly at Han An, "Han An, do you really not understand what I’m getting
