Chapter 650: Chapter 650: Master

Early the next morning, Zhong Nianyao and Lu Yichen finished breakfast and left the inn.

Taking Lu Yichen with her, Zhong Nianyao headed directly toward the outskirts.

Unlike last time, now that she had clarified exactly where she was, Zhong Nianyao was on familiar ground.

Once they reached the outskirts, they found a secluded spot. Zhong Nianyao took hold of Lu Yichen’s hand and instantly teleported them to a place.

After they arrived, Lu Yichen looked around and said, "This is—"

"This is a place where I lived before." Zhong Nianyao gazed at the small wooden cottage not far away, then glanced at the surrounding flora, a hint of nostalgia flickering in her eyes. "When I was young, I lived here with my master."

Although the cottage had become dilapidated and the vicinity was overgrown with trees and weeds, casting a desolate feeling, it remained her former home in her heart.

Zhong Nianyao walked ahead, reaching the front of the wooden cottage. She took a deep breath, reached out, and pushed the door open.

The cottage hadn’t been lived in for so long that when the door swung open, there was a squeaky, grating noise that seemed rather jarring.

Through the open door, one could see the furniture inside, all covered with a thick layer of dust.

Lu Yichen followed Zhong Nianyao inside and suggested, "Shall we clean it up?"

"No need." Zhong Nianyao shook her head and couldn’t help but sigh, "I just wanted to show you around. Even if we clean it up now, it would soon fall into disrepair again. Moreover, once we find Zhong Mingxin, I suppose we’ll hardly have a chance to come back here!"

Lu Yichen didn’t say anything but watched Zhong Nianyao quietly.

After looking around, Zhong Nianyao quickly left with Lu Yichen.

She had thought that returning to this wooden cottage would stir her emotions, but the reality was different. Everything felt like a lifetime ago to her. Although she still missed her master dearly, those bygone days were slowly fading from her memory.

Leaving the wooden cottage, Zhong Nianyao led Lu Yichen to an area behind it. To their surprise, there was a small mound, which, while surrounded by many plants and trees, looked thriving yet ordered.

Lu Yichen glanced at it and immediately noticed something crucial, "There’s an array here!"

"Yes," Zhong Nianyao nodded, "it’s my master’s grave. He had explicitly requested before his death not to erect a tombstone for him. In fact, I don’t even know his name."

"All this time, I have just called him master, and I barely saw any outsiders. Usually, he would go out to purchase supplies. He said that when a person dies, they are extinguished like a candle; there’s no need to leave any trace, so he told me not to set up a stone. If I truly wanted to honor him, then I should plant some beautiful plants and trees at his grave to keep him in good spirits even in this place he rests eternally."

"After that, I went through the books my master left behind, found this array, and gathered a small portion of the spiritual energy here to make these plants and trees thrive. In this way, I could keep my master company."

"Your bond with your master was indeed very deep," Lu Yichen remarked with a sigh. "Even after regaining your memory, you still call him master."

From Zhong Nianyao’s every word, he could tell just how much respect she held for her master.

"Yes," Zhong Nianyao nodded, "perhaps because he really did cherish me. I wanted to bring you here today especially to let my master see the man I’ve chosen. It should help him rest easy."

Lu Yichen nodded, then turned to face the small mound, his expression growing solemn, "Master, rest assured, I will take care of Yaoyao."

Zhong Nianyao also looked at the mound, her eyes filled with remembrance, "Master, look, I’ve even found someone to spend my life with. Seeing me happy, you should also be at peace."

The pair stood side by side, their exceptional poise clear even in silence.

Lu Yichen and Zhong Nianyao stood there closely together, not speaking, yet both understanding each other’s thoughts.

After a long while, they finally left the spot.

For the next two days, Zhong Nianyao and Lu Yichen wandered around near Beijing, casually taking in the local customs and culture of Lai Country.

It was early morning on the third day when Nanny Qiu sent someone to the inn to invite them.

Zhong Nianyao was not surprised that Nanny Qiu knew which inn they were staying at.

Without the means to hide their whereabouts, surely Changsheng Hall could uncover such a trivial matter, or else why would she seek their assistance in finding Zhong Mingxin?

Their meeting this time was not at Baoyi Building but was arranged in a private room of a tea house.

Upon entering, they saw that Nanny Qiu was already waiting there.

Upon the arrival of Lu Yichen and Zhong Nianyao, Nanny Qiu immediately got up, "Young Master, Madam, you have arrived! Please, have a seat."

Lu Yichen and Zhong Nianyao had not provided their names, so to this day, Nanny Qiu only knew to address them as Young Master and Madam.

The person who had shown them in had the insight to quickly leave the private room and considerately closed the door upon leaving.

Soon, the three of them were seated.

After pouring a cup of tea each for Lu Yichen and Zhong Nianyao, Nanny Qiu began, "Madam, the person you asked me to find has been located."

"At Princess Mingyue’s Mansion, right?" Zhong Nianyao spoke lightly.

Her sudden interjection made Nanny Qiu pause for a moment, then she nodded, "That’s correct, it seems Madam had guessed as much. Ten years ago, just after the drought ended, the Emperor led the royal family to Yong’an Temple to offer prayers for good fortune."

"On the way back, Princess Mingyue came across an injured man. Since then, this man has stayed within the Commandery Princess Mansion. However, it’s said that Princess Mingyue is quite fond of this man and keeps a close watch on him. Therefore, not many have seen his true face."

"We expended quite a bit of effort and resources just to get a glimpse of the man. He resembles the portrait you provided, though he appears a bit more aged than in the image. We have confirmed that he is the person you are looking for."
