Chapter 276: Extra Utensils

The sun was already up, and its rays were already seeping through Nathan’s room windows and balcony doors when he slowly opened his eyes. Inhaling his mate’s scent still wafting from his arms, he smiled as he stared at her sleeping face. She looked so exhausted. As such, he carefully moved out of bed, making sure not to wake her up as he walked across the room.

Looking back on his bed, Nathan had a longing look as he stared at Raine. How he wanted to stay by her side for just a bit more time, but he had to get up and meet the others by now. Besides, Raine needed some rest herself.

"Maybe later then..."

Quickly taking a bath, he got dressed before giving Raine a light and quick kiss on her forehead and lips. He then gave himself one last look over before he finally left the room.

Making his way outside, Nathan prepared himself for a long day as he reached the living room. Already, he saw that Aspen was waiting for him.

"Coffee?" Aspen raised his hand up, offering him a cup of coffee that a servant just served.

Wordlessly, Nathan took the offer and give the hot beverage a small sip.

"Looks like you slept well," Aspen commented with a hint of teasing.

"Don’t start," Nathan halfheartedly growled. "It’s far too early."

Before Aspen could continue with his teasing, Decan soon came and asked, "Are you ready? The Elders are expecting you, King Nathan."

"It’s not like it’ll be the first time they bombarded our King with their whims," Boris chuckled, interrupting the scene as he quipped. "Isn’t that right, my King?"

"Same shit, different day," Nathan scoffed as he looked at Boris. "You stay here. We’re still in the process of clearing your name, so stay low until then. You can accompany Raine and Lyne in the meantime. Make sure they’re safe."

It was only logical. He couldn’t take too many risks since he’s aware of how Raine’s life would be put in danger again. That stunt of hers by claiming her position as his Queen was just liable to add more fuel to the fire.

"No worries. I’ll make sure to look after them," Boris reassured him with a wide smile. "You go on ahead."

As soon as everyone had left, Boris quickly went back to Nathan’s kitchen.

"Is the breakfast ready?" he asked the chef, who simply nodded and handed him the tray he requested for himself and Lyne to share. He would’ve liked to cook breakfast himself, but the King’s chef was way too strict in letting people use the kitchen.

Giving the chef a nod of appreciation, Boris let out a sigh as he made his way back out to the hallway with food in tow. Absently, he wondered when he could go back to his own home at the Night Crawler’s Pack compound that Danos seized.

"No time to be sulky now, Boris. Focus on winning your mate over while you’re lucky to have this opportunity," Boris whispered to himself, gathering the courage to move forward as he enthusiastically walked to one of the guest rooms Lyne was using. Knowing the time, he was sure that she was awake by now.

"No time like the present..."

Balancing the tray on one hand, Boris knocked on the door. Promptly, the door opened, revealing Lyne on the other side of the doorway

"Boris?" Lyne practically asked. She looked surprised to see him.

"Breakfast?" Boris suggested with a smile, raising the tray as he offered. "Raine’s still asleep in King Nathan’s room, and I believe she’ll take a bit more time till she wakes up. Seeing that, I thought I could bring your breakfast here," he awkwardly smiled. "The weather’s nice outside, so why not have breakfast on the balcony?"

"Alright then. Come inside," Lyne answered as she fully opened the door, letting Boris enter with his tray of food. Quickly, he put the tray on the balcony table in Lyne’s room.

"Shall we, then?" Boris offered with a smile.

"You really don’t have to bother with this..." Lyne murmured as she watched him pull out a chair for her.

Boris cheekily smiled at her and replied, "But it’s not a bother for me. I like doing simple things like this for you." He gave her the warmest smile he could muster as he offered once more, "Come here and eat. I’m sure you’re starving already. It’s quite late compared to how we usually eat breakfast at Raine’s house, after all."

Left with no other choice, Lyne let out a sigh she sat and watched Boris fill her plate. Seeing him try so hard for her, she unconsciously bit her inner cheek. The erratic beating of her heart made her feel things she really didn’t want to feel.

It wasn’t the first time Boris showed his gentlemanly and thoughtful side towards her, but for some reason, she actually felt herself being affected by his actions.

"Thanks," she plainly uttered. She then raised an eyebrow at the empty plate as she asked, "Aren’t you going to eat with me?"

"Is it okay?" Boris innocently asked. "I wouldn’t want to impose."

Lyne chuckled, "Eat. What’s the purpose of all these extra utensils if you’re not gonna use them? Besides, this serving is too much for me to finish alone."

Hearing her, Boris bashfully scratched his head and naively replied, "Hmm... I actually don’t know why the chef gave me an extra plate. He probably thought I was gonna eat with you." He then chuckled, "Nevertheless, I should thank him since I actually got to eat breakfast with you like this."

"You sound like a natural playboy acting naive..." Lyne teased, making Boris laugh at his obvious ploy. He did notice the extra eating utensils on the tray, but he didn’t bother returning them to the chef.

"Got me one, I guess," he admitted. "But seriously, I didn’t expect him to give me those."

"Well, it happened," Lyne scoffed. "So let’s eat."

Nodding at her words, Boris smiled as he took his own portion of the large meal. Setting up, his plate, he began eating breakfast with Lyne, basking in the presence of her as they ate in peace.

"I’m sure they’ll still continue protesting against the Boss..." Lyne absently thought out loud, opening up a conversation.

"Yeah... The protests will be nonstop since we have a tradition to follow," Boris nodded before taking in a bite. "It would’ve been easy if King Nathan’s mate is also a part of the Convel Society. A werewolf like us, I mean," he explained.

"Unfortunately, she’s not. Even if she isn’t Marcus’s real daughter, the chances of them accepting her is slim at best. Unlike us who can marry whoever we wanted even if they were a human, the King doesn’t have that luxury... He needs someone powerful the elders and community would approve of."

"I see..." Lyne hummed in understanding.

"We also have this belief that our group won’t prosper if our ruler doesn’t have a Queen approved by all..." Boris added as he poked at his food. "So that’s another obstacle for us."

"From what I’m hearing, those problems can easily be solved if Nathan simply abdicated the throne," Lyne mumbled.

"True, but it wouldn’t be advisable to do so at this time, Lyne," Boris absently retorted.

"Why?"
